"This isn't funny! Untie us!" Diana shouted, watching Alexander clutch his stomach, laughing so hard he could barely stand.

"Dad, she tied us up!" Nathan lied.

"That's not true, don't lie. Please, Alexander, untie us — I'm getting eaten alive by ants here."

"Be right back," he said, and walked off, leaving her there again.

He came back a few minutes later with a huge knife in his hands.

"Tell me that's to cut me loose and not to finish me off and bury me somewhere no one will ever find me."

Please, let that man never get sick again! It was the phrase Diana had repeated most throughout the day. That ogre—because there was no other word for him right now—hadn't stopped shouting for her all day. He'd barely let her breathe."Diana, can you fix my pillow? Diana, my neck hurts, can you rub it? Diana, I don't think I'm going to make it, I'm dying—can I grab a boob first so I die happy?"She couldn't take it anymore! And it wasn't that she didn't want to take care of him—it was that the miserable man was faking it!She could tell by his face that he'd almost fully recovered. In a matter of hours he'd improved dramatically, but he didn't want to hear a word about being left alone. That wasn't even the worst part. The worst part was that His Majesty had demanded his bullhorn to call for her.Diana had decided to confiscate his phone after he called her more than a hundred times. The first time, she'd taken advantage of him falling asleep to sneak off for a shower. She was covered

  • A Little Stepmother in Trouble   Chapter 36: She wanted that man, and when he touched her, nothing else existed.

Diana had sunk into a deep sleep, which was nothing new for her. Ever since she'd moved into that house, she'd rediscovered how to sleep without a single worry weighing on her. She'd tried to stay alert, to keep watch over Alexander, but the moment she felt the warmth of the bed—and the warmth of her husband's body—she'd surrendered to sleep. She was the worst nurse in the world. She'd let herself drift off, and the fantasies her mind conjured up gave her no reason to wake. She could feel her husband's breath quickening against her back, his big, mischievous hands starting to roam her body. No way was she waking up now—not even in her dreams would she let go of all that pent-up heat Alexander had lodged inside her. Maybe she was the one running a fever, caught his cold and all, because she could feel his ragged breathing and the heat pouring off his body. Her husband's hands filled themselves with her breasts and tormented them until she wanted nothing more than for him to never stop.

Diana bolted from the house—no matter how big the place was, it felt like there was nowhere to hide from him. From what her husband did to her.She couldn't even work out in peace anymore without him showing up looking like some gladiator—rugged, feral, all man. And that drove her crazy. Her husband hid the caveman living inside him under the suits he wore to work, but the second he took them off, his true self came out. The man who could pull her from the water in the middle of the mountains, who protected her from imaginary killers and from the mice he planted himself. She felt him as both her torment and her salvation, because when Alexander was near, she felt safe. And over the last five years, she'd been scared enough to last a lifetime. She had to run—from him, and from everything he stirred in her.Diana reached the pool area. The weather wasn't exactly swim-worthy, but she didn't care. Still in her workout clothes, she dove straight in."Oh my God, it's freezing," she sputtere

  • A Little Stepmother in Trouble   Chapter 34: I Want You, You Want Me, So Why Are We Pretending Otherwise?

Diana was giving it everything she had on the treadmill. Her heart was about to pound its way out of her chest, and she was taking out how miserable she felt on that machine, when her husband stepped onto the one beside her. She shot him a sideways glance but didn't slow down. He'd claimed the treadmill next to hers and said something she didn't catch because her music was blasting. When she noticed his mouth was still moving as he eased into a casual walk, Diana killed her speed and hopped off. The abrupt stop sent a wave of dizziness through her, and she had to grab the machine to keep from losing her balance. Alexander didn't waste more than a couple of seconds jumping off his own and catching her in his arms.God, why do you insist on torturing me? she seethed silently. Her husband, seeing she wasn't answering him, pulled her earbuds out."You're being reckless," was the first thing she heard once the music stopped blaring. "You come here to run yourself into the ground and you ha

  • A Little Stepmother in Trouble   Chapter 33: Alexander Was Going to Try to Win Her Heart Back

The following week wasn't easy. Diana couldn't stop turning that night over in her mind, wondering if things would be different if she'd reacted another way, but for once she was going to put herself first. At least where her feelings were concerned. She wasn't a rehabilitation center for traumatized men — she had enough of her own baggage to deal with."Mommy, why don't you and Daddy talk to each other?" her daughter Victoria asked her that morning."We do talk, sweetheart. I don't know why you think we don't."The girl was completely right, and she wasn't the only one who'd noticed.Nathan had been getting more and more rebellious, and Diana sensed the boy was holding on to some fear he didn't dare put into words, and the way he expressed it was by acting like a tiny ogre. She wished she had the same knack for reading their father, but with Alexander, she couldn't decipher the hidden messages behind his behavior."No, you don't talk anymore. You don't even call her witch anymore, Mo

Alexander couldn't process it when he heard her say she loved him.It wasn't the first time she'd hinted at something like that, but this time the words hit him like a fist to the chest. He watched her bolt, clearly intent on getting away from him, and he was going to let her.He stood there in shock. Alexander didn't want to just get along with her — he wanted her to be his wife in every sense of the word, but without handing over his heart. He felt so selfish that he headed straight for the study, the room he always locked himself in when things got to be too much.He never let anyone in there. It was his temple for suffering, and the place where he kept the one visible portrait he still had of Rebecca. He'd locked the rest of the photos away so he wouldn't torture himself with them, saving them for his children, for whenever he was finally capable of talking to them about their mother. He stood in front of the painting hanging on the wall, the way he'd done so many times before, an
