Chapter 3

Author: Canal
Blake's POV

My entire body felt cold. Fear still gripped my heart as I sat next to Quinn.

When Seth began crying softly during the second half of the movie, Quinn softened her voice and asked, "Why are you crying so much?"

She sighed as he sniffled, then pulled out a tissue and wiped his tears. "You're going to crush the popcorn bucket from how hard you're gripping it."

Last month, when I started crying while watching a pet movie, she just threw a packet of tissues at me. Her tone was impatient when she told me not to drip my tears all over the leather seat.

The lights came back on after the movie ended. The three of us followed the crowd and left the hall.

Seth's eyes were slightly red. "It's such a shame that the male and female lead weren't able to be together because of the second male lead. It was so obvious that the female lead didn't love the second male lead anymore, but he kept clinging to her like a leech."

"You're right," Quinn chimed in. "It's all the second male lead's fault for not being able to read the room."

"I totally agree with what the male lead said," Seth said, sighing in relief.

"What did he say?"

"The one who isn't loved is the actual other person in a relationship."

Quinn briefly halted her footsteps before saying, "That makes sense. No one benefits when one party insists on holding onto a title."

Seth arched his brow, pleased. He looked at me and asked, "What do you think, Blake?"

"I also think that the male and female leads were a good match for each other," I said, nodding. "The second male lead made the right choice by breaking up with her and vacating the position of her boyfriend."

Quinn glanced at me, frowning. It seemed that she hadn't expected me to agree with them.

But she didn't question me further. Instead, she tugged at her tie in frustration and changed the topic.

"Let's eat. Seth mentioned that he wanted to have wings in the morning."

…

We made our way to a chicken-wings restaurant opened by an influencer on the outskirts of the city. It was located in a remote area about 12 miles away from the city.

Quinn ordered a large serving of spicy wings. She dipped a wing in a bowl of blue cheese dip before placing it on Seth's plate. "There's a little too much sauce on it. I hope you don't mind."

She then grabbed a tissue and put it right next to Seth's hand.

Seth's eyes were crinkled into crescents as he grabbed the spicy wing and said, "Since you messed up the first time, my punishment is for you to prepare another one for me."

Meanwhile, my plate remained spotless. It seemed Quinn had forgotten my stomach had become rather sensitive to spicy food because I spent too many nights staying up to work overtime with her.

"Our anniversary is next month," Quinn suddenly said. "Coincidentally, I'll be on break. I've already booked the flight tickets. We're going skiing in Frestown."

Seth immediately set his wing down and rolled his eyes in annoyance. "Skiing? I want to go scuba diving in Tromille. I've already picked out my swimsuit."

"You'll be signing your own death sentence if you go to the beach, considering how bad you are in the water," Quinn retorted with a scoff.

When the two of them couldn't come to an agreement, Seth kicked my chair and said, "You decide, Blake. We'll go wherever you choose."

They were playing the same game again, forcing me to be the decision-maker whenever their opinions clashed. Whenever I sided with one person, the other would throw a tantrum and force me to grovel for forgiveness.

"I want to go to Healwich," I said.

Quinn's expression visibly darkened the moment the words left my lips. Seth rolled his eyes and threw his tissue onto the table, muttering, "What a wet blanket."

He grabbed his phone and started playing a game.

Quinn continued eating her spicy wings with a blank expression. They were waiting for me to fold, just like I had countless times before. They knew that I couldn't endure being given the cold shoulder, so I would eventually acquiesce to their request of my own accord.

They were waiting for me to put on a smile and say, "Let's go to Frestown then," or "Tromille sounds good."

I placed my tissue on the table and said, "Let's break up, Quinn."

Blake's POVPeace was restored to my life after the ambulance took Quinn away. She didn't appear again for the next two weeks.I clocked in and out on time every day and took Mom for a stroll around Westbill Lake on the weekends. The days passed by in an orderly manner. One afternoon, I received a call from an unknown number."You must be so pleased with yourself, Blake Beckett."The voice on the other end belonged to none other than Seth."I don't understand what you're trying to say," I replied.Seth laughed before saying drily, "She still chose you in the end. You've won.""I don't think I've won anything," I said calmly. "If this is supposed to be a victory, I would rather let you have the honor."Seth fell silent on the other end of the line for a few seconds. His breathing turned a little ragged before he asked, "Do you remember the last movie that the three of us watched together, Blake? I had said that I thought it was a shame that the male and female leads didn't end

Blake's POVThree days after I started my new job, the receptionist, Layla Dennis, placed a cup of warm honey water on my desk. A receipt from the food delivery platform was stuck to the bottom of the cup. The buyer had included a note with the order."30 percent sugar. Mix with warm water. His stomach is sensitive. Please deliver this on time."Just then, my phone lit up."The temperature's dropping in Healwich. Remember to drink water. I couldn't take care of you when your stomach was acting up before. I'll be sure to take care of you every day from now on."I left the honey water untouched and poured it down the sink in the break room.…Quinn blocked my path again after I finished work. She pulled out a folded A4 sheet of paper from her pocket, unfurled it, and offered it to me. "Take a look at this, Blake."The company's seal was stamped on the paper. It was a termination letter, and the person who had been fired was Seth."I fired him," Quinn said confidently, as if sh

She was full of energy as she haggled with the store owner. My phone lay quietly in my pocket. I didn't have any missed calls or messages ordering me to deliver stomach medicine within ten minutes. I also no longer had to deal with Seth's sarcastic behavior.I spotted Quinn standing outside my apartment. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she looked incredibly haggard. She frowned reflexively when she noticed the plastic bag I was holding."You blocked me just to come back here and go grocery shopping?" she asked.I brushed past her and headed for the stairwell.Quinn grabbed my wrist. "I drove through the night to pick you up, Blake. You've won. I've already changed the name on the property deed."She used her free hand to pull out a document from the inner pocket of her coat and pressed it into my h

Third-Person POVThe next day at 11:00 am, Quinn balanced a pen between her fingers and leaned back in her chair. She hadn't slept well the night before. The apartment had been eerily quiet.Blake would have sent her three messages by now—reminding her to drink water, asking what she wanted for lunch, and telling her his schedule.Quinn's phone screen remained dark that day. She didn't believe that Blake could keep up his act for too long. They had been together for eight years. He could stew in his worry for half the day if she so much as looked at him the wrong way. There was no way he could leave her. He would be back by tomorrow—at the latest, the day after tomorrow. He would use another number to call her and apologize to her through tears. The dull thuds of footsteps against the carpet echoed from beyond the door. Seth threw open the glass door and barged into her office without knocking."What message are you trying to send, Quinn Simmons?" he demanded in his usual indulg

Third-Person POVSeth was practically glued to Quinn as he gestured to where he wanted the couch to be in the living room. He softened his voice as he asked her how firm the mattress in the master bedroom should be. Not only did Quinn not push him away, but she even wrapped an arm around his waist.Quinn pulled her phone out after she returned home. A message popped up on her screen, notifying her that a total of 236,542.17 dollars had been wired into her account. The number was so precise that it included the last two decimals, not a penny more or less. She laughed as she stared at the number. "You're willing to take out a loan just to make the act seem more real?"Quinn knew Blake better than anyone else. He sent most of the money from his pitiful salary back home, so it was impossible for him to produce so much money at once. His hard-to-get methods were getting sloppier and sloppier. She was sure the debt collectors would start blowing up his phone within three days when
