Chapter 2

Blake's POV

Quinn's smile faded. "Why are you throwing a tantrum now?" she snapped.

"I have no idea what's going on with you," Seth said, spreading his arms. "We can just watch the comedy if you want to watch it so badly. There's no need for you to give us attitude. You're acting as if we're teaming up to bully you."

Quinn's expression turned cold. "We don't need to bend to his whims. We came out to watch a movie together, and we're going to stick to the plan."

She then forcefully dragged me toward the ticketing counter.

The next show for the romance movie was about to begin. The screen showed only three seats left. Two seats were next to each other, and the last one was across the aisle.

Quinn handed me the ticket for the seat across the aisle without hesitation. "Seth has astigmatism. He won't be able to see the subtitles clearly if his seat is too close to the side. You can take the seat that's across the aisle."

"I don't think that's right," Seth chimed in, looking at me. "Blake is your boyfriend, after all. I'm fine with sitting on the side."

"Blake doesn't like watching romance movies," Quinn said while pressing the ticket into my hands. "He'll just be scrolling on his phone even if we do sit together."

We entered the hall after the staff member checked our tickets.

Quinn and Seth sat next to each other with Seth holding a bucket of popcorn. They reached into the bucket at the same time.

When their fingers brushed against each other, Seth turned his head to the side and chuckled softly. The corners of Quinn's lips curled up into a faint smile as she said something in a low voice.

I averted my gaze. The man next to me suddenly shifted, taking my armrest.

"Are you here by yourself, handsome?" the man asked.

I ignored him and shimmied to the right, putting as much distance as I could between us. But the moment the screen went dark, I felt a rough hand touch the outside of my thigh.

The man moved his lips close to my ear and whispered, "Your pants are so short. You're just asking for someone to touch you, right?"

A loud buzzing filled my ears. I shot to my feet and shouted, "What the hell do you think you're doing?"

My outburst drew everyone else's attention in the hall. My finger shook uncontrollably as I pointed at the man and exclaimed, "He touched me! Not only that, but he also said disgusting things to me!"

The man also rose to his feet, wearing a good and honest expression as he innocently asked, "Why are you screaming, sir? The seats are a little cramped, so I just accidentally touched you. I swear that I didn't do it on purpose. Please don't cause a scene and ruin the movie for everyone else."

The others began whispering among themselves.

"He's right. He looks like a good and honest man. He doesn't seem like the type to harass another person."

"He overreacted. It's not like he's going to lose anything just because the guy touched him for a few seconds. Besides, perhaps he isn't even into men."

Nobody took my side. I shot a pleading look at Quinn, saying, "He really touched me, Quinn…"

"It's pitch black in here, Blake," Seth said while covering his mouth with his hand. "Perhaps you were just imagining things? He looks like an upstanding guy."

Quinn didn't stand up or shield me. Instead, she impatiently snapped, "Is your tendency to paint yourself as the victim acting up again, Blake? You were stalked in the past. Is that why you see everyone as thugs now?"

Her words made me freeze in place.

During my junior year in university, Quinn and I were stuck in a long-running cold war because I chose to stay with Seth. Seth was annoyed that I looked for Quinn every day, so he intentionally dumped my belongings outside the door.

I had no choice but to find a place for myself, but someone ended up stalking me.

A man broke into my place at midnight and pinned me against the mattress. Fortunately, the neighbors heard the commotion and called the police.

Quinn's eyes were bloodshot when she finally rushed over. She frantically pulled me into her arms and said, "It's okay, Blake. I'm here. You don't have to be scared."

She healed the wound in my heart with her warmth. However, at that moment, she was tearing the scar open with her own two hands and displaying the bloody wound for everyone to see.

Quinn spoke in a low voice to the man who was sitting next to her. After wiring him some money, the man grabbed his things and moved to my original seat.

"That's enough. Don't just stand there and let everyone make a fool out of you," she said as she pointed at the vacant seat. "I know that you just want to change seats. Come and sit next to me."

Blake's POVPeace was restored to my life after the ambulance took Quinn away. The days passed by in an orderly manner. One afternoon, I received a call from an unknown number."You must be so pleased with yourself, Blake Beckett."The voice on the other end belonged to none other than Seth."I don't understand what you're trying to say," I replied.Seth laughed before saying drily, "She still chose you in the end. You've won.""I don't think I've won anything," I said calmly. "If this is supposed to be a victory, I would rather let you have the honor."Seth fell silent on the other end of the line for a few seconds. His breathing turned a little ragged before he asked, "Do you remember the last movie that the three of us watched together, Blake? I had said that I thought it was a shame that the male and female leads didn't end

Blake's POVThree days after I started my new job, the receptionist, Layla Dennis, placed a cup of warm honey water on my desk. A receipt from the food delivery platform was stuck to the bottom of the cup. The buyer had included a note with the order."30 percent sugar. Mix with warm water. His stomach is sensitive. Please deliver this on time."Just then, my phone lit up."The temperature's dropping in Healwich. Remember to drink water. I couldn't take care of you when your stomach was acting up before. I'll be sure to take care of you every day from now on."I left the honey water untouched and poured it down the sink in the break room.…Quinn blocked my path again after I finished work. She pulled out a folded A4 sheet of paper from her pocket, unfurled it, and offered it to me. "Take a look at this, Blake."The company's seal was stamped on the paper. It was a termination letter, and the person who had been fired was Seth."I fired him," Quinn said confidently, as if sh

She was full of energy as she haggled with the store owner. My phone lay quietly in my pocket. I didn't have any missed calls or messages ordering me to deliver stomach medicine within ten minutes. I also no longer had to deal with Seth's sarcastic behavior.I spotted Quinn standing outside my apartment. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she looked incredibly haggard. She frowned reflexively when she noticed the plastic bag I was holding."You blocked me just to come back here and go grocery shopping?" she asked.I brushed past her and headed for the stairwell.Quinn grabbed my wrist. "I drove through the night to pick you up, Blake. You've won. I've already changed the name on the property deed."She used her free hand to pull out a document from the inner pocket of her coat and pressed it into my h

Third-Person POVThe next day at 11:00 am, Quinn balanced a pen between her fingers and leaned back in her chair. She hadn't slept well the night before. The apartment had been eerily quiet.Blake would have sent her three messages by now—reminding her to drink water, asking what she wanted for lunch, and telling her his schedule.Quinn's phone screen remained dark that day. She didn't believe that Blake could keep up his act for too long. They had been together for eight years. He could stew in his worry for half the day if she so much as looked at him the wrong way. There was no way he could leave her. He would be back by tomorrow—at the latest, the day after tomorrow. He would use another number to call her and apologize to her through tears. The dull thuds of footsteps against the carpet echoed from beyond the door. Seth threw open the glass door and barged into her office without knocking."What message are you trying to send, Quinn Simmons?" he demanded in his usual indulg

Third-Person POVSeth was practically glued to Quinn as he gestured to where he wanted the couch to be in the living room. He softened his voice as he asked her how firm the mattress in the master bedroom should be. Not only did Quinn not push him away, but she even wrapped an arm around his waist.Quinn pulled her phone out after she returned home. A message popped up on her screen, notifying her that a total of 236,542.17 dollars had been wired into her account. The number was so precise that it included the last two decimals, not a penny more or less. She laughed as she stared at the number. "You're willing to take out a loan just to make the act seem more real?"Quinn knew Blake better than anyone else. He sent most of the money from his pitiful salary back home, so it was impossible for him to produce so much money at once. His hard-to-get methods were getting sloppier and sloppier. She was sure the debt collectors would start blowing up his phone within three days when
