Serene’s Pov

The cafeteria was loud and full of people from the office. They were gathered around tables, talking and laughing while they ate. I looked around. Kaelon was not there. Good.

I took a tray and put a turkey sandwich, some fruit, and a bottle of water on it. I found an empty table by the window, far away from everyone else. The last thing I wanted was to sit near someone who would ask me questions about working for Maxwell.

*Or to run into Patricia,* I thought, my eyes moving nervously around the room. I needed to stay away from that woman. I truly did not understand what she saw in me.

I had just taken one bite of my sandwich when a tray landed hard on the table right across from me.

I looked up and almost choked.

Patricia.

*Of course. Of course she found me.*

“Do you mind if I sit with you, Russell?” she asked, but she was already sitting down in the chair. Her hair was down in soft curls. She had undone one more button on her shirt. Her smile was warm and full of intenti

  • A One Night Stand That Felt Like Revenge   There were no more secrets hiding between us

The next day:SereneI felt the bench under me was the only safe place left in my whole world. Everything else was like it had been swept away by a flood. I watched Gabriel come closer to me in the garden. He looked worried and he wanted to know.“Serene? What is the matter? Your message seemed…” His words faded away. His eyes were looking deep into mine, trying to find an answer that if I didn't tell him, he would never find out.“Everything is the matter,” I said and paused for a few seconds. “And I have to tell you the reason.”So, I did. I began with the start, the silly, deep feelings I had for Kaelon that seemed like I couldn't control them. I told him about having no money, which made me invent Russell Carrow. I told him about the awful day I was thrown out of the job I had just walked away from. I did not make myself look good. I told him about my stupid idea to get back at Maxwell, about the giant hill of work, and the terrible talk I heard in the bathroom. Then I told him ab

  • A One Night Stand That Felt Like Revenge   I have to tell you the whole story. Can you meet me?

SereneThe elevator doors slid shut, trapping me inside a silent, metal box. Maxwell’s question was stuck in my head, playing over and over. “Why does a woman wanting you scare you so much, Mr. Carrow?”It was not a simple question. It was an attack. He had watched me escape from Patricia, and with perfect aim, he had found the center of my fear. He did not know my secret, but he knew I had one. He was hunting for it.Back at my small desk, the pile of papers looked even bigger. It was like the lie I was living had become a real, heavy thing I could touch. Every time I tried to read a page, I heard the men from the bathroom again. “Sobbing in the supply closet… quit being lawyers for good… I give him three days.”I would not make it three days. I could feel my fake self, Russell, starting to fall apart. My body hurt from fighting with the furniture. My face was tired from trying to look hard and manly. My brain was drained from all the work: keeping my voice low, holding my body in a

  • A One Night Stand That Felt Like Revenge   Welcome to your nightmare...

Serene’s PovBy the time lunch arrived, I felt completely destroyed. It was as if I had been taken apart and put back together all wrong.Maxwell had given me a job that looked like it needed three people. He said it was left by his last assistant, who had walked out without any warning. The piles of paper, folders, and little notes formed a small tower on my desk. It looked like it would fall over every time someone walked past my terrible little corner.“You need to sort all of this, put it in order, and connect the related files before you leave today,” Maxwell had said, dropping one last heavy pile. “My last assistant let things become a mess. I am certain you will do a much better job.”What he really meant was: *Welcome to your nightmare, Russell.*I walked to the cafeteria like someone who had lost a fight. My stomach was making loud, hungry noises. I kept my eyes on the floor and went the longest way possible, just to make sure I would not see Kaelon. The idea of looking at hi

  • A One Night Stand That Felt Like Revenge   At least the money will be worth it.

Serene's PovI sat at my tiny new desk, which was positioned directly across from Maxwell’s huge, important-looking one. It was so far away he probably needed binoculars to see me. I was breathing hard, like I had just finished a race, and I was staring at him with so much anger I wished he would just drop dead.Let me explain how I ended up in this situation.********Fifteen Minutes Earlier…**“Now that we have gone over your duties,” Maxwell had said, standing up from his chair like a man who was about to make my existence a living hell, “let us talk about where you will work.”I looked around his huge office with a little bit of hope. Maybe he would give me the nice spot by the windows? Or maybe that small, pleasant table next to the bookshelf? But no. Instead, Maxwell walked all the way to the other side of the room, so close to the door that if someone pushed it open hard, the person sitting there would get smacked in the head, and he pointed to a narrow, sad-looking area that s

  • A One Night Stand That Felt Like Revenge   I am very capable of providing good work.

Serene's Pov"First of all," Maxwell started. He walked back to his desk and leaned against it, crossing his arms. "You will get my coffee every morning on your way in. I drink it black, and it has to be from Taylor's Cafe, right across the street. Not from the cheap place downstairs, not whatever you drink, Taylor's. They know what I want."*Naturally. He could not just have normal coffee like a regular person. Of course not.*"You will be in this office no later than a quarter past eight," he went on. "That way, my coffee will be on my desk by eight-thirty. There is no discussion about this."I nodded, committing it to memory. "I understand, sir.""Second." His eyes were locked on me, intense and focused. "You will carry my briefcase, my laptop bag, and any other bags I need to move. I should not have to bother with such simple jobs when I have an assistant."*A donkey. He wants me to be his personal donkey.*"Of course, Mr. Arden," I said, my teeth pressed together."Third, you wil
