Chapter 4

Penulis: Ice Cream
I had one foot out the door when Oliver grabbed my wrist. "When did you get a boyfriend? Why didn't I know about this?"

My face flushed red, especially with everyone watching and Abigail right there.

I yanked my hand free. "What does it matter to you whether I have one or not?" Anger flared in my voice as I continued, "Even my parents haven't said anything, so why do you care?"

Just then, Thomas' voice dropped into a stern warning. "Oliver, sit down! Watch your manners."

I turned and gave a polite bow to the elders. "Goodbye, Mr. and Mrs. Holland."

Behind me, Abigail's sweet voice chimed in, "Geraldine is so beautiful and always performing on stage. She must have plenty of admirers. It's normal for her to be dating someone, right?

"Oh, and I think I saw a little hickey on her neck, under her scarf."

Realizing what she had just said, she gave an awkward laugh. "Sorry, maybe I shouldn't have said that. We art students are quieter types. Dancers like her are just more open, I guess

Oliver looked like his world had caved in. "That's impossible! We were supposed to get married, weren't we?"Did you forget? We grew up together. We used to say we would marry each other when we got older. You'd play the mom, and I'd play the dad when we pretended to have a family…"And we were together for almost a year. We were happy…"All the composure Oliver had managed to hold onto crumbled. His voice cracked as he went on, "We almost got married, didn't we? You're just saying this to upset me, right?"Hearing that, Dad slammed his palm on the table. "Are you saying my daughter's lying to you? That our entire family is deceiving you?"Christopher's a fine young man. He's respectful and dependable. Even though Gerry just agreed to start seeing him, we all believe they'll end up married."I quickly stepped forward to calm him, pressing my hand to his chest. Then, I turned to Oliver and said, "Oliver, stop bringing up that childhood engagement. It was just something the adults

Oliver continued, "But what I feel for you is—""Oliver," I cut him off, my voice calm and detached, as if I were speaking to a stranger I had just met by chance. "Weren't we just hooking up?"I paused before adding, "I hope you find someone who suits you better."I had plenty of other things to do.Finally, I added, "Don't contact me again. You were pretty quick to block me before, so don't get clingy now."After a brief silence, I said, "It's annoying."...I didn't know if it was because of retirement or the tropical air, but my parents looked healthier and happier than they had in years. If it weren't for the need to go back and finalize the property transfer during the New Year, they probably wouldn't have returned at all."I can handle it myself," I said while reviewing some paperwork. "You don't have to worry."My parents exchanged a glance. "Forget it. We don't feel at ease letting you go alone. Besides, the Holland family invited us to a small New Year's gathering. W

"And you?" Oliver stared at me, completely unharmed, and sneered. "How are you perfectly fine? Do you think I don't know your temper by now? When we were young, you dragged me to the amusement park until our parents called the police, and I was the one who took the blame!"You never let things go. You're mad that Abigail took something that was yours, so you lashed out. Apologize to her!"Everyone around us stared with that same mix of curiosity and disdain.I laughed coldly. "Sure. I'll apologize."He relaxed a little. "See? You don't even have a boyfriend. Last time, you only said that out of—"I muttered, "Fine, I'll apologize." Then, I suddenly raised my voice, fury breaking loose. "Here's your damn apology!"Before anyone could react, I turned to Abigail, who was still hiding behind him, and slapped her right across the same cheek again.I flexed my wrist and said evenly, "I'll send the recording to the group chat later."Then, I smoothed my hair back and flashed a bright

Abigail slipped her arm through Oliver's and gave me a gentle, graceful smile.I returned a polite smile, set my wine bottle down, took a deep breath, and turned back to my conversation with the senior alumna.I pretended not to notice the gaze burning into my back. Oliver didn't look away for a long time. Two glasses of red wine in, I was still clear-headed.Later, I made my way to the restroom, fixing my makeup while I was there.Everyone was talking about visiting one of our former teachers later that evening, including my old mentor, the respected head of the dance association. She had always valued me back in school, so of course, I had to go.When I confirmed everything looked perfect, I pushed the door open."Geraldine?" Abigail appeared in a white dress, every step measured and elegant."Hi," I answered politely.I was ready to walk past her when she suddenly grabbed my wrist. Her grip was so strong that I winced. I was surprised by the strength hiding behind her fragi

An hour later, I was sure there was nothing left in that apartment I wanted to take.Oliver had already set the table. There was an entire spread of food, all carefully plated. For a moment, I thought we could still see each other as friends someday. After all, we had shared so many years of history.I reached for a dish, but I froze when he suddenly said, "Don't move."He rushed over, holding a tiny round saucer no bigger than his palm. "Just take a bite of each. I want to bring the rest to Abigail while it's still hot."He smiled, holding up the saucer. "Tell me which one tastes best. I'll pack more of that for her. If there's something you don't like, I'll leave it here for you."I slammed the cutlery down, making his hand stop midair.I shot to my feet, the chair screeching sharply against the floor. My throat tightened as I snapped, "Oliver, I never saw you as some casual hookup. I really liked you. All those things I said before…"My eyes were red, my voice trembling. "I

Mom hesitated, frowning slightly. "But... Gerry, you…"I glanced at the time and said, "It's fine, Mom. I'm serious about this, and I've thought it through. You don't have to worry about me. If anything, you two should be thinking about money."I leaned in and kissed her cheek. "I've got something to do, so I'll head out first."The thought that time and distance might dull the pain made me feel a little calmer. My sincere and passionate love for Oliver had gone unspoken, but at least I had kept my dignity. I thought Oliver and I would end things on decent terms. What I didn't expect was to find myself locked out. Standing at his door, I entered the passcode repeatedly, only for the message "incorrect password" to pop up.Frustration flared. I knocked, but no one answered. When reason finally returned, I called him. The call rang several times before cutting off.By the fifth attempt, he sent a message. "I'm on a date. Don't bother me."I took a long, deep breath, swallowing th
