Chapter 7

Author: Where is Spring
Maria's eyes trembled.

Eleanor sounded so natural just now, like a wife talking to her husband about their son.

Sunny Villa had been Maria and Richard's home for seven years, but the way Eleanor spoke made it feel like she was coming back to her home—not Maria's.

And Jonathan, knowing Maria would worry about him so much, still lied about being sick to get her back…

Maria's heart froze, turning ice-cold.

Richard's face tightened, his tone laced with concern. "Maria, Eleanor only works at the company because…"

"You've got it all wrong, Maria," Eleanor cut in, stepping forward and warmly taking Maria's hand. "I'm just filling in for the secretary, Ivy Hill. I'll be here for just a few days while she takes care of her family during an emergency."

Maria yanked Eleanor's hand back, her voice flat. "Did I say I misunderstood anything?"

Eleanor's face stiffened for an instant before she smiled softly. "Jonny called me just now, saying you won't go back to help him with his homework. If he doesn't finish it, his teacher will scold him again tomorrow. Maybe don't quarrel with the boy? His studies matter more…"

"Enough. Don't blame her." Richard's voice cut in, silencing Eleanor.

He looked at Maria, worry evident in his eyes, though his tone allowed no refusal. "We'll talk about your resignation tomorrow. It's late, so I'll take you home now."

A ringing was already filling Maria's ears.

She knew what came next. The nausea.

Every time her emotions spiked, her body reacted.

Maria forced herself to stay steady. "I'll collect the resignation letter tomorrow. Remember to sign it."

"Mari…"

Richard reached for her. His fingers brushed her cool silk jacket, leaving only a trace of chill.

Maria walked away quickly, unwilling to hear another word from them. On her way out, she noticed a new office next door.

Though she rarely came to the company, she remembered Ivy's office was tucked at the end of the hall. Richard had never liked anyone walking around and disturbing him near his office.

But now, there was bold lettering on the neighboring office's door. CEO's Executive Assistant: Eleanor Cooper.

This was the so-called "helping for a few days."

Bitterness welled up in Maria's chest as she stepped into the elevator and pressed the button. Just then, Mr. Graham's video call came through.

Maria answered. The sight of Jonathan, crying with blood running down his forehead, entered her eyes.

"Madam! Please come home! Master Jonathan is really hurting this time!"

One minute later, Maria burst out of the elevator. She quickened her pace into a run, the wind howling by her ears as she remembered what had happened in the past.

When Jonathan was three, he had hurt his head while playing in the garden. Wracked with guilt, Maria had carried him all the way to the hospital as he bawled. The doctor stitched him up, and Jonathan stopped crying. He was trembling from the pain, but he would wipe her tears with his tiny hands.

"Don't cry, Mom. Jonny loves you," he had said.

Now, the injury was in the very same place.

A tear slipped from the corner of Maria's eye. She could reject the Jonathan of today, but not the three-year-old Jonny from her memory.

-

Sunny Villa glowed brightly.

When Maria arrived, the air reeked of blood. Jonathan was still hiccupping with sobs as the family doctor finished dressing his wound. At the sight of Maria, his crying only grew louder.

"Mom, I'm dying! You only came back now that I'm dying!"

Maria rushed over. "You're not dying. Let me see your injury."

Jonathan leaned closer. It was only a scrape, though deep enough to look frightening. Maria sighed in relief and bent to blow on it, only for Jonathan to shove her away.

"Eleanor!"

Maria froze.

Ignoring his wound, Jonathan threw himself into Eleanor's arms, whining, "Eleanor, my head's hurt! It hurts a lot! Blow on it, please? If you blow, it won't hurt."

Eleanor cuddled him tenderly and blew a few times on his head. "Good boy. Better now?"

"Yeah! It doesn't hurt so much when you blow," Jonathan beamed.

Maria's lips went pale, bile rising in her throat.

Eleanor stroked Jonathan's hair and looked at Maria with a pointed smile. "I bought children's painkillers while I'm on the way here. If he still hurts tomorrow, make sure he takes one. It doesn't increase drug resistance."

Her tone was that of a mistress giving orders to a servant. Maria's eyes are even colder. "I don't live here. Go tell someone else."

"Uh…" Mr. Graham rubbed his hands awkwardly, not sure how to break the ice between them, just in time for Richard to come in after parking his car.

Jonathan let Richard inspect the wound, then glanced at Maria and demanded, "Mom, go wash some fruit. Dad and Eleanor love grapes. I want an apple!"

Before the words even settled, Richard smacked the back of his head lightly. "Who are you bossing around? You're getting ruder and ruder to your mother lately. Apologize."

Eleanor rushed to shield the boy, her eyes full of disagreement. "He's just a kid, and he's hurt. Richard, don't…"

Maria didn't want to hear more. She grabbed her purse, nearly vomiting as she bent down. Pressure pounded in her skull, but she forced back the nausea and headed for the door.

"Mari, are you alright?"

Richard caught her arm, then looked at Eleanor. "Go home. Our family affairs aren't your concern. Don't come so often."

Eleanor suddenly looked up, and her expression shifted.

Richard turned away, voice lowered as though afraid to startle Maria. "You don't look well. I'll take you to the hospital."

Without waiting, he guided her out.

The nausea overwhelmed Maria, and she shoved him off. She covered her mouth with her hand and rushed upstairs to the bathroom. Kneeling by the toilet, she vomited up mouthfuls of water.

The vomiting echoed downstairs. Richard's face tightened, and he hurried upstairs.

Behind him, Eleanor's weak voice drifted. "Richard…"

He stopped, frowning. "What's wrong?"

Jonathan, forgetting his own injury, rushed to support Eleanor. "Are you okay?"

Eleanor swayed, collapsed onto the sofa, and her breathing quickened. Clutching her chest, she gasped, "My…my chest, it hurts… so much…"

Mr. Graham cried, "Ms. Eleanor has heart disease, right? Is she having an attack? Sir, what should we do?"

Upstairs, Maria rinsed her mouth and opened the bathroom door—just in time to see Jonathan tugging desperately at Richard's sleeve.

"Mom just has her usual nausea. Don't worry about her! Eleanor will die if she doesn't get to the hospital!"

Maria, Willow, and Jonathan moved into the living room with their bowls of soup in their hands and sat around the coffee table to continue with their unfinished meal. That left Richard and Cameron alone in the dining room, staring at each other in an awkward silence. The redwood table was still filled with the unfinished dinner, but now it looked like a deserted stage. The two of them were like the ridiculous clowns left behind after the audience was already gone.In the end, Cameron was the first to break the silence.Without giving the furious Richard another glance, he picked up his briefcase and followed the other three into the living room. There was not the slightest embarrassment on his face. He still wore the same gentle, composed smile, as if the childish argument a moment ago had never happened. He walked to Maria, who was sitting on the carpet and eating her soup in small mouthfuls, then took out the revised composition from his briefcase again, the one their argument

Even Richard could hear how unconvincing he sounded.Willow, who was sitting at the table, couldn't hold back anymore. With a cold laugh, he slowly picked up a piece of barbecued rib and dropped it into his plate before casually landing the final blow.He didn't even look at Richard and spoke in a detached tone, as if he was talking to the air. "Oh, really? You were married to her for seven years and couldn't hear it then. Now you're divorced, and suddenly you've had some great awakening and can understand her music? What a miracle!"Willow's casual jab instantly rendered Richard speechless. His face flushed bright red, as if he had been stripped bare in front of everyone. He burned with shame and anger, but could not force out a single word. The atmosphere at the table turned awkward. On one side, Richard and Cameron, two equally childish men, kept bickering in a completely pointless showdown."...I can give up the whole company for her!""...I can give up myself for her.""

Things were extremely tense at the Brooks residence's dining room. The expensive redwood table was filled with dishes rich in color and aroma, all made by Richard himself. Yet at that moment, not one person at the table had much of an appetite.Richard sat at one end of the table with a dark look on his face. His eyes fixed on Cameron and Maria across from him, the two of them chatting idly.Maria had her head lowered as she quietly discussed something with Cameron. Cameron had a gentle, attentive smile on his face. He even reached out and naturally tucked a loose strand of hair behind Maria's ear. That unspoken understanding between them made the gesture feel so natural and intimate.Richard felt the jealousy inside him explode completely, swallowing every logic in his mind. He couldn't take it anymore.Bang! He suddenly slammed down the fork and knife in his hands. The utensils hit the table with a grating sound. The dining room went silent at once as everyone looked at him.

  • A Regret too Late   Chapter 676

Whether Maria and Cameron were talking about music theory or exchanging thoughts on inspiration, it was a world beyond Richard. Richard's world was packed with business and numbers, and the world of music was a place he could neither reach nor enter. For the first time, he understood with painful clarity that he was an outsider. A complete outsider, shut out of their world and utterly out of place.Jonathan watched from the side, and he let out a sigh like an adult trapped in a boy's body. He leaned close to Richard's ear and whispered in a volume only the two of them could hear, "Dad, look at them. They really do have so much in common."That sentence was like adding more fuel to the fire.Richard's expression darkened even more. Under the table, he clenched his uninjured hand so hard his knuckles turned white. He used everything he had to hold back the urge to get up right then and throw that irritating man as far away from Maria as possible.Willow saw it all and deliberately

Despite the worry in their hearts, everyone's eyes turned to the door at once.Mr. Carson also mumbled to himself in confusion as he walked to the door, "Who can it be at this hour?"Cameron was standing outside, holding a bouquet of sunflowers as bright as sunshine, a calm, gentle smile on his face. The moment Maria saw him, there was surprise in her eyes. There was even a trace of guilt she could not quite hide. "Cameron? Why are you here?"The moment Willow saw Cameron, the gloom on his face vanished, as if he had just seen one of his own. He walked over warmly and even gave Cameron an affectionate pat on the shoulder. "Cameron! Come in, come in! Perfect timing, you're just in time for dinner. You haven't eaten yet, right?"Cameron walked in and handed the bright bouquet of sunflowers to Maria first. He looked at her with a gentle smile, then explained why he had come over. "I heard you're holding your own charity concert, Mari. It just so happens that I own a few private c

Richard remembered Maria liked her barbecued ribs a little sweeter. The vinegar had to go in at the very end to bring out the aroma… He could not afford to mess this up again. Not even once.Jonathan was unusually well-behaved, too. He sat on the couch after he was done watching TV. He did not beg to play video games like he usually did, and he did not turn on the TV to watch more cartoons either. Instead, he put on his headphones, curled up in the corner of the couch with a tablet, and quietly watched a silent comedy by himself. He did not want to make a sound and disturb this hard-won, fragile peace. The last light of the sun as it was setting streamed through the tall windows, washing the whole living room in a warm orange glow.In the kitchen, a man moved with quiet focus and intent. The clatter of pots and pans were the simplest sounds of everyday life.In the living room, Maria played the cello with easy grace, the music sounded ethereal. Beside her sat a boy wearing he

Maria nodded. She thought about his words. "I understand, but..."Seeing how uneasy she still looked, Willow knew she would have to get through this on her own or figure out what was exactly happening. Whatever anyone else said would not really help. With that in mind, he gave her a small smile

Jonathan frowned a little before nodding hesitantly, not exactly understanding what Richard meant. "I think I get it, Dad. Basically, you mean there's no way you and Mom can ever make up again, right?"Richard looked at him for a long moment, then nodded without pause. "Yes. I can only stay nea

The sudden turn of events made Maria and Cameron tense up at once, especially when they saw Richard blocking Janet's way. They had no idea what was behind Richard's sudden outburst. From the look of it, he seemed ready to pick a fight.Maria was more than a little nervous, while Richard kept his

Maria's thoughts started to run wild, her mind a mess. She didn't go rigid until she obviously felt Cameron's breath brush across her face.Just as he was about to kiss her on the lips, Maria turned her head, dodging him on instinct.Cameron froze, staring at her in disbelief when he saw what she
