Chapter 7

Author: Miette W
Candlelight flickered, casting eerie shadows in the ancient dining room.

Adrian elegantly cut into Linda’s cheese soufflé, the warm cheese oozing out. He took a bite, and a look of satisfaction crossed his pale face.

"Perfect," he said softly. "You have passed the test."

A triumphant smile bloomed on Linda’s face.

The system’s mechanical voice announced: 【Player Linda has received one immunity.】

Next were Jake and Emma. Adrian ate their offerings without comment, and they passed safely.

Then it was my turn.

As I stepped toward the table to pick up my salad, Kevin rushed past me, shoving me aside and grabbing my plate.

"What—?"

By the time I realized what had happened, Kevin was already presenting my salad to Adrian.

A smug, vicious smile was on his face.

"Sorry, Harper," he said, pushing up his glasses. "But I don't want to die."

"You bastard!" I seethed. "You broke our agreement!"

Kevin shrugged. "Where's the proof? Besides, this is part of the game, isn't it? Survival of the fittest.

"Love is a lie."Adrian's words were like an icicle to the heart, but in his trembling voice, I heard something else—despair. The ancient chimes of a clock echoed through the air again.【Final Task: Make Your Last Wish】【Warning: This wish will determine the fate of everyone.】【Countdown: 10 minutes】Jake and Emma exchanged a look, their eyes flashing with greed."We wish to own this manor!" Emma shouted. "And to banish the evil spirit here forever!"Jake nodded. "Yes! We want to be the masters here and take all the gold and treasure!"Adrian looked at them, a scornful smile playing on his lips."Then… your wish is granted."【Clearance... failed.】The system's voice was a death sentence."The greedy are not worthy of salvation."Emma's scream echoed through the manor as she and Jake began to be consumed by black mist."No! This is impossible! We—"Jake's words were cut off as they both vanished into the darkness.【Idiots... The Boss isn't some 'evil spirit.' Did they really think they

Just as Jake’s finger was about to squeeze the trigger, a strange melody filled the air.An old gramophone had appeared in the corner of the room, playing a haunting waltz.【New Task: Truth or Dare】【Rules: Each player may ask the Boss three questions. The Boss must answer truthfully.】【Warning: Once a question is asked, it cannot be retracted.】An invisible force pressed Jake’s shotgun down. The silver dagger in Emma’s hand was frozen in place.Adrian slowly materialized, but his face was unusually grim. His sharp gaze swept over Emma and Jake. The game started at a weird time, in the middle of the day... A bold thought hit me: Could it be... did Adrian appear to save me?While I was racking my brain for what to ask, my fans were already buzzing.【Ask him if the blueberry was sweet!】【Harper, ask the Boss about his performance... was he better in bed when he was alive or after he died?】【This is too good hahaha.】【I guarantee these questions will piss him off.】Reading the bold commen

The side quest was over. It was time for us to go to our separate rooms for the night. My mad "suicide" attempt had drained all my energy. I collapsed into a chair, trembling with a mixture of relief and lingering fear.Adrian didn’t look at me again. He turned and walked straight to his room.He seemed a little unsteady on his feet, his retreat almost hurried. He hesitated at the door for a moment, but then went inside without a backward glance and shut it firmly.I heard the lock click.【Hahaha, the Boss is shy!】【Confirmed: thousand-year-old virgin.】【Harper, you're a witch.】【I can't take it anymore. What is wrong with this Boss? Is he under this woman’s spell?】I was worrying about how I’d get through the night when the door to the room next to Adrian’s creaked open, revealing a bed just as soft and warm as his.I don’t know why, but a warmth spread through my chest.Did Adrian prepare this for me?The next morning, another scream shattered the manor’s quiet.Linda was dead. She l

The library was thick with dust, the old leather-bound books smelling of mold and time. The three of us began our search. Linda tackled the documents on the desk, Kevin checked the bookshelves, and I went through the scattered diaries."Found it!" Kevin suddenly shouted. He held up a yellowed leather journal. On the cover, in elegant cursive, was the name "Adrian Blackwood."I hurried over and took the journal. I opened the first page and recognized the handwriting.October 15, 1847. Today, Mother once again prepared that damned blueberry pie for me. I have told her countless times that blueberries give me a rash and make it difficult to breathe, but she always forgets... or rather, she chooses to forget.November 2, 1847. The head chef made me a half-baked French cheese soufflé today. The warm, smooth texture felt as if it could soothe the loneliness in my soul. If there is anything left in this world that can bring me joy, it must be this dish.Linda quickly leaned in. "So he likes h

Morning sunlight streamed through the broken stained-glass windows, but it brought no warmth.I was woken by a scream."Bob! Bob!" Kevin's voice echoed through the living room, filled with terror and despair.I woke up in the master bedroom. That's right—Adrian had knocked me out with his power last night, but he hadn't kicked me out. In fact, I found myself wrapped tightly in a black cashmere blanket, warm and safe as if I were in a cocoon.【The Boss is actually pretty thoughtful.】【Tsundere confirmed.】【The Boss must have just been in a good mood last night. This woman is going to get herself killed sooner or later.】I quickly dressed and ran to the living room. The sight before me made me gasp.Bob was still on the sofa, but he was no longer the 45-year-old man from yesterday. His hair was completely white, his face was a mask of deep wrinkles, and his skin was as slack as a dried apple. His wish was granted. He really was killed by time, and happily—he died as a hundred-year-old ma
