Chapter 4

Autor: Lunar Reverie
In the hospital emergency room, the doctor cut open the clothing on my back and sucked in a sharp breath.

"Severe scald burns, combined with a serious allergic reaction. You need to be admitted immediately for wound debridement, or you're at extremely high risk of infection."

I gritted my teeth, cold sweat covering my forehead. "Doctor, just give me some basic treatment and an injection to numb the pain. I still have something I need to do."

The doctor frowned. "Are you trying to die? Burns this severe can lead to sepsis at any moment."

"Please."

Half an hour later, I dragged my feverish, badly burned body into a taxi and headed to the luxury hotel where Jolie had shared her location.

On the way, I called the police. I reported a suspicion that illegal transactions were taking place inside the hotel.

The officers arrived quickly and accompanied me to knock on the door of Jolie's suite.

The door opened.

August stood there in a loosely tied bathrobe, water still dripping from his hair. When he saw me standing outside with the police, his expression turned ugly.

The officers showed their badges and walked straight into the room.

On the large bed, Jolie was wrapped in a blanket, her clothes disheveled and her face full of alarm.

Several empty sleeping-pill bottles lay scattered across the nightstand, but they contained vitamins instead.

After inspecting the scene and asking a few routine questions, the officers left.

The moment the door closed, August completely lost it.

"Gemma, what the hell is wrong with you? Calling the police to search a hotel room? Are you trying to destroy my reputation?"

He charged at me and grabbed me by the collar.

The wounds on my back were violently pulled open, and blood immediately soaked through the bandages.

I stared at him coldly. "She swallowed sleeping pills to kill herself? She looks more energetic than anyone I've ever seen."

Jolie climbed off the bed, crying so hard her face was streaked with tears. "Gemma, you've misunderstood. I was just frightened. August was only comforting me."

August protectively moved in front of her. "Why are you even explaining yourself to her? Gemma, you owe Jolie an apology. Right now. Do you have any idea how much psychological trauma you caused her by bringing the police here?"

He pressed down on my shoulders, forcibly pushing me toward the floor. "Beg her forgiveness!"

The bandages on my back split completely. Blood streamed down my spine and dripped onto the expensive carpet.

The excruciating pain made my vision blur, but I bit down hard on my lip and summoned every ounce of strength I had to break free of his grip.

I pulled a document I'd already signed from my bag and hurled it straight at August's face.

"August, these are the divorce papers. I'm not giving up a single cent of my share of the marital assets. I'll see you in court."

The sharp edge of the paper cut his cheek.

August froze, staring at the divorce papers on the floor. A flicker of panic crossed his eyes, but arrogance quickly covered it.

"Gemma, you think waving a piece of paper around will scare me? Fine. Let's see what you amount to once you're no longer with me."

I didn't look at him again. I turned and walked out of the room without hesitation.

The cold air in the hallway washed over me, and my entire body began to tremble uncontrollably.

I dragged my heavy steps toward the hotel lobby.

My fever had reached 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit. Every breath felt as though a knife were slicing through my lungs.

I sank onto a sofa in the lobby and took out my phone.

I gathered the hospital's burn injury report, the police incident record, and the evidence tracing the transfer of the ten million dollars used to purchase the apartment.

I also included high-definition video footage from the exit of Crownspire Palace showing Jolie wearing the amethyst pendant engraved with my name.

I bundled everything together and hit send.

The recipients were every alumni group chat, the group for August's business partners, and the Cross family's extended-family chat.

The progress bar crept slowly across the screen.

98%... 99%... 100%.

Sent successfully.

Almost at the same instant, I heard a series of shrill, continuous vibrations coming from August's room upstairs.

Countless tags, accusations, and screenshots flooded his phone.

I stared up at the dazzling crystal chandelier overhead.

My vision gradually blurred. My phone slipped from my hand and struck the marble floor.

Everything went black, and I lost consciousness.

August froze. Tears rolled down his cheeks in big, heavy drops. "No. I know I'm a jerk, but I really can't live without you."I took a document from the bag beside me and tossed it in front of him. It was an official case-filing receipt with an anti-counterfeiting watermark."You are a jerk. But the law will teach you how to behave."August lowered his head to read it, and his eyes widened. The document stated in clear, unmistakable terms: "The case against August Cross for embezzlement and the misappropriation of five million dollars in Gemma Lewis's personal funds during their marriage had been formally filed. A notice of detention would be issued shortly.""Gemma... You're sending me to prison?" He stared at me in disbelief."You misappropriated assets I owned before our marriage. Of course we're going to settle that account." I stood up and looked down at him."August, our game is over."I called the tea lounge's security staff and had them drag August out. He was so utterl

With nowhere else to turn, August returned to the Cross family estate. It was the only property the family still owned that hadn't been seized. He knelt before his parents, weeping as he begged them for help."Mom, Dad, please. Find out where Gemma is. If she'll just agree to see me once, the Cross family can still be saved."His father, Samuel Cross, trembled with rage. He snatched a teacup off the table and hurled it at August's head.Tea and blood streamed down his face."You ungrateful brat! You brought this on yourself. You drove Gemma away for the sake of another woman! The Cross family is bankrupt because of you, and you still have the nerve to bring her up?"His mother, Serena Cross, stood to the side, wiping away her tears. "August, the Lewis family has made it clear that anyone who helps you will be treated as an enemy. We don't even dare leave the house anymore."Suddenly, the front door was thrown open with a bang.Jolie stumbled inside, dragging a suitcase behind h

On the third day in Arcadia, August woke in the middle of the night, troubled by jet lag and anxiety. But when he reached for the person beside him, he found the bed empty. He opened the door to the hotel suite and saw Jolie sitting on the living room sofa, excitedly making a video call. Shopping bags from Hermes and Chanel were piled on the table."Don't worry. I've got that idiot completely under control."Jolie laughed into the screen, looking nothing like someone suffering from severe depression."I had someone forge his signature on the accounts receivable from his company. I've already transferred everything into my overseas accounts."Once I resell these bags over the next few days, we'll settle down in Lyravane."August felt as if he'd been struck by lightning. All the blood seemed to drain from his body. He shoved the door open and stared at Jolie, his eyes bloodshot. "What are you talking about?"Jolie screamed in fright, and her phone fell to the floor.August rushed

When I opened my eyes again, my vision kept shifting between blurriness and clarity."Gemma, you're finally awake." My mother, Isabel Lewis's voice reached my ears, thick with tears.I turned my head and saw my parents standing beside the hospital bed. Both of their eyes were bloodshot from lack of sleep."The doctor said the severe burns weren't treated in time, and combined with your serious allergic reaction, they caused life-threatening sepsis."My father, Robert Lewis's voice trembled. "You were in the ICU for three whole days and nights. We almost... we almost lost you."I tried weakly to lift my hand, only to discover that tubes were connected all over my body. "Dad, Mom, I'm sorry I made you worry."My father wiped away his tears, his gaze turning razor-sharp. "Don't worry. I won't let that jerk from the Cross family get away with this."During the three days I'd been unconscious, the outside world had been turned upside down. The damning evidence I'd posted in the grou

The wind howled through the valley.August froze for a moment before his face turned livid. "Gemma, can you come up with a new trick for once? Every time something happens, you threaten me with divorce. Do you think it's funny?"He was convinced I was just throwing a tantrum. After all, over the past three years, I'd stepped away from my career for him and devoted myself to taking care of our home.In his eyes, I'd become nothing more than a dependent who'd lost the ability to survive on her own.Jolie tugged at August's sleeve at just the right moment. "August, I think I twisted my ankle. It really hurts."His attention immediately shifted to her. He crouched down and anxiously examined her ankle. "How could you be so careless? It's all red."Without hesitation, he scooped her onto his back. Then he turned and shot me a cold glance. "I'm taking Jolie down the mountain to the hospital. Since you're so determined to demand a divorce, prove it. Get down on your own."Carrying Jo
