Chapter 3

Author: Trickle
All at once, the zombies were chattering. "Is Zach serious? We're not going to die?!"

"For real! We have nothing to fear now!"

"We will get even for you, boss!"

I had no idea if they were actually getting even for my sake or just yearning for the snacks stored in my fortress, but the zombies began to swarm Max and Helen.

In no time at all, they were restrained and tied together.

And when that was done, the zombies were all staring at me, rubbing their palms eagerly.

It gave me the creeps, so I quickly pointed at the storehouse. "All the stuff you can eat and drink is in there! The passcode is 54188!"

Once the door opened, they swarmed inside like a horde of hungry rats.

"Coke! Oh, my beloved Coke!"

"Canned sardines! This is definitely heaven!"

Zach held out a chocolate bar at me with his trembling hand, groaning, "You're hungry… Have this…"

The zombies all stopped eating just to stare at us, eager for gossip, with one of them even teasing, "Hey, boss! I think Zach likes you!"

I smiled, but it might have been better if I just cried. "I'm not hungry. It's okay…"

Who would want to date a zombie who couldn't access his own bank account?!

As Zach gingerly withdrew his hand, the zombies started clamoring again.

"So what do we do with these two, boss?"

"Let's just leave them out there to starve!"

Max naturally didn't understand them and felt overwhelmed, bellowing, "What are you people doing to us?! Quit moaning and groaning the whole time!"

In contrast, Helen was unusually calm, until one of the zombies took a good look at her.

"Wait, I know her…"

"Right? I saw her before I transformed. I was at Bonobo's for some burgers…"

"Yeah, I dined at Bonobo's before I transformed too!"

"Me too! I remember now… She was like, everywhere!"

It seemed that the apocalypse was no natural calamity, but a manmade incident instead!

Nonetheless, the front gates of the fortress blew wide open, and a group of men in hazmat suits charged inside.

Their leader flashed his badge at me. "Rafael Federer, WHO. We heard there were zombies here, so we came to help!"

WHO?!

"Thank you, sir!"

I shook his hand enthusiastically as I quickly replied, "These zombies are actually intelligent, and I can communicate with them. I can vouch for them that they are innocent. Also, I can name two suspects responsible for their zombification!"

The leader looked at me suspiciously. "Are you sure? The zombies follow orders?"

I snapped my fingers at the zombie who wanted clam chowder. "Barrel roll!"

Hence, as the humans looked on in shock, the zombies formed an orderly line and started barrel rolling as if they were a circus troupe.

It took a while for Rafael to come to their senses and pat my shoulder. "This is a huge discovery! But we still need further confirmation. Please bring your zombie friends and come with us for further investigation!"

I nodded repeatedly, pointing at Max and Helen who were tied up. "They are coming with us too!"

Then, picking up the PA system microphone of the fortress, I announced, "Follow me! Tonight, we feast!"

However, we were subdued and locked up in the basement holding cells as soon as we arrived.

"What the heck… Did they just take us for a ride?!"

"Starving after I just started eating normally again…"

I smacked him right then. "Patience! This stuff takes time!"

That was when Zach exclaimed in shock, "I got it!"

That was when Sam strode forward. "I'll take part in the trials too. I know my medicine, and I trust no one can better describe how I feel. It'll greatly improve the development of the serum!"Nodding, I said, "We have two volunteers!""Three, you mean! You're coming too, boss!" I leaped backward to create some distance between us. "Why should I go?!""We need you to be our translator!"I rolled my eyes, feeling myself dying inside. That was when Zach strode up. "I'll go if you go."And with that, it was one human and three zombies heading straight to the pharmaceutical development facility. With me translating, the testing of the serum went smoothly. In just a month, Zach and Sam's mutations were diminishing, their skin healing. On the other hand, Max wasn't healing, and it left the experts confused.I suggested, "Maybe because he's second generation?""What?"I then explained to the researchers how Max took an enhanced drug, and they all nodded. "Oh, that might be it!

Quickly turning off the livestream, I leaped up to hug the leader, my tears overflowing. "Finally! You've come to save us!"He looked a little disguised as he shoved me away, confirming my identity before turning to the zombies. "You're all coming with us—identification can wait until after treatment!"I was overjoyed—talk about a friend in need! Straightening my collar, I said, "Sir, I can help with translation. They can understand me."The leader raised a brow at me suspiciously. "You? Really?"Pointing at Zach, I said, "This is Zach Lowe, founder of Lowe Group and a billionaire in his own right. Most of Hadonia's suppliers are affiliated to his enterprises, and his interests spread across nations in foreign exchange, manufacturing, science, and the like!" Then, turning to Zach, I said, "Nod if I'm right!"Zach nodded repeatedly, and the researchers all stopped smiling as they began taking notes somberly.I then pointed at the other zombies. "Alright, roll call!""James St

A month later, however, our food was running out, and the zombies were all skin and bones."Please, boss… Why are we still starving…""You promised us food! That's why we followed you!""I should have known… Should have chased after freedom instead…"I smacked all of them on the head. "All you know is to eat! I'm trying to get us all out of here, y'know! And when we're out, you can eat all the stuff you want!"They were left yelping and flailing. "But is there really no way out? We might really starve to death here…"Beep! That was when we heard the beeping sound, and we turned to find a cellphone lying in a corner. It had no SIM card and was running low on battery, but was connected to wifi. And there was a YouTube video on the screen…Quickly plugging it in, I exclaimed, "This is our way out!"Once the battery was charged, I tapped to start a livestream and used the title 'Toss a Coin to Your Zombie Circus!'Naturally, we didn't even have a single viewer in the first ten

In just a flash, Max was in front of Helen, his face contorting viciously. "You lied to me! I was a fool to believe you!"With that, he slapped Helen across the face with a pus-filled hand, sending her stumbling toward Rafael. He frowned, and they started chatting at length.I saw that Zach was frowning as he listened to their conversation and suddenly yelled, "Drop down!"I cursed as I heard the crack of gunshots and a hail of bullets shot through the air, scrambling for cover. On the other hand, the zombies were fearless despite the hail of bullets, even smiling triumphantly."Charge!!!"Hence, the zombies all dashed forward at the flashes of gunfire, like those plus-sized customers chasing a Black Friday sale.I was so stunned that I forgot to dodge bullets, and one zipped past my ear. Even as I was startled, I suddenly found myself held by Zach's strong, sturdy arms. "Watch out! Get behind me!"I eyed him, suddenly finding even his mutations not all that grotesque…-T

Helen's face dropped as she sprang to her feet. "H-How did you get here?!"I blinked innocently at her. "Make enough little mistakes, and then it becomes a disaster. So quit deluding yourself—it's the end for you too!"As Zach led the zombie swarm through the door as well, Helen finally felt the danger and grabbed Max, holding him in front of herself. "Stand back, or I will blow his head off!"Max didn't expect Helen to suddenly turn on him, with shock, fear, and confusion all showing on his face. "H-Helen?! Are you serious?!" Helen rolled her eyes impatiently. "Shut up! If I didn't have to sabotage that fortress for the Zombie Project, I wouldn't even waste a second with a loser like you!"Max's eyes were wide with disbelief. "What?! You made zombies? Who are you?!""Your girlfriend's apparently a Chillan spy," I smirked at Max in amusement. "And here you are, thinking that you have such amazing charisma! No one's blind enough to like you except me, y'know!"Finally understand

Pointing at the guards outside, Zach said, "They're mocking us, calling us morons.""You know their dialect?"Zach's look turned grim as he explained, "No, they are speaking in Chillan, which I understand. And they are saying that this so-called apocalypse is just Chilla conducting a bioweapon experiment on Hadonia!"However, it seems that even they are surprised that the effect of their drug is too weak. It doesn't affect the mind, which is why an exception like you can understand us!"Pausing, he looked at me as he gingerly continued, "Oh, and he said you're really dumb for leading us straight into a trap…"Everyone became dead silent right then, while I pursed my lips and wanted to hide in embarrassment. "So we're basically a failed live specimen experiment? Well, is there any way to get us out?"The zombies shook their heads. "The bars are made of special materials—can't chew through them or pry them off!"That was when Zach calmly took a grenade out of his pocket. "Perhaps
