The engine's hum pulled Halo from her thoughts. The lawyer came out of the driver's seat and held the door open for both of them. Talon ushered her in before moving inside himself, placing the envelope beside him.
"Do you know where we are headed?" He asked the quiet girl. Sitting at the far end of the seat, away from him. That wouldn't do, his goal was to make her warm up to him. Talon had an important task to allocate to Halo and that constituted part of the reason why he chose her instead of Scarlet. "I do not know" she responded stiffly, curled into one corner. Her legs resting on the car seats instead of the floor. The pleasant scent of his perfume wafting in the air. "Minutes ago you didn't mind my hand on your back, now you act like one touch or even looking at me will turn you to stone" She raised her head up, still avoiding eye contact with him. What could she possibly do if she pushed at consummating the marriage. She hadn't even considered that beforehand. "There's something I would like us to discuss when we get to our next destination. In private, please" Talon's eyes narrowed but he nodded nonetheless, wondering what it could be. Judging by the expression on her face while they were waiting outside. It seemed like something had indeed startled his new bride. •••••••• The drive was long and Halo had drifted off. A tap on her cheek woke her and she nearly jumped. Her head was resting on Talon's shoulder. "We're here" He announced, arranging the sleeve of his suit where slight traces of drool could be seen. Halo went mortified with embarrassment. Although he simply waved it off. He pushed open the car door and alighted, with her following behind. The mansion loomed ahead, grand and imposing, surrounded by an expanse of land that stretched endlessly. Tall iron gates parted as they approached, revealing a beautifully paved driveway lined with neatly trimmed hedges. As a Remington, she had known luxury, but this? Talon was the utter definition of wealth. "Welcome home". He announced in a welcoming manner. The house staff emerged, bowing. She partially hid behind him. "Is your family here?" Her current attire wasn’t fit for an Ashwood’s wife. A terrible first impression. "No. You’ll meet them when Father requests it." She exhaled in relief. "Besides, this isn't the family estate. It’s ours. No one intrudes without prior notice." As they entered, staff greeted her at every turn. They weren’t ignoring her, they weren't avoiding her. They acknowledged her. She smiled, a real, toothy grin. Talon was taken aback. Against her gleaming dark skin, the sight was........not bad. Halo followed Talon inside, her steps cautious as she took in the grandeur of the space. Marble floors gleamed beneath her. Everything was polished, curated. Halo swallowed. She had expected luxury, but this was something else entirely. The house seemed like a fortress and a home at the same time. Talon walked a few steps ahead, glancing back when he realized she had slowed down. "Impressed?" She hesitated, then nodded. "It is tastefully furnished" A chuckle escaped his lips. "You’ll get used to it." A butler approached, bowing slightly. "Sir, the interior company has successfully renovated the master's bedroom to your adequate instructions" He nodded and proceeded to lead the way to his bedroom. She followed in silence, her mind tangled with questions. The butler didn't mention two different rooms, he referred to renovating Talon's room only. Would she be sleeping on the couch, in the basement?. He stopped in front of a large, double-door suite. And with a gentle push, the door opened. Halo's lips formed an 'O' for the third time in a row. The room was breathtaking. A canopy bed with silk sheets stood at the center, its frame crafted from deep mahogany. To the side, floor-to-ceiling windows bathed the space in soft evening light, overlooking the vast gardens below. A vanity sat against the wall, beside an en-suite bathroom with a massive tub she could probably drown in. The decor was elegant, neutral, yet undeniably sophisticated. It was a spacious, comfortable, and Halo friendly environment. She turned to him, her fingers curling into her palms. "This isn’t what I expected at all." He studied her, his gaze sharp yet unreadable. "What did you expect?" "Something colder. Less personal." She responded quickly, pressing her lips together as soon as the words left his lips. She didn't want to offend him by referring to his demeanor as cold. Although, the Ashwood's were too much a feared family. Especially what she had read and heard about their son's, painting them to be the stereotypical ruthless men in dark romance novels. She had expected Talon's bedroom to be all black with a dragon figurine looming above the bed frame. Talon smirked, stepping closer. "It initially had a few splashes of gloomy colours as I like a little black and red for myself. But I had to re arrange that, as I have a new roommate" She nodded, feeling grateful but at the same time anxious about sharing a room with him. But before she could piece the words together to say something, he straightened. "Now, about that thing you wanted to discuss?" Halo stiffened. Right. The question that had been haunting her since they left the courthouse. She cleared her throat and prepared to speak. "I don't that we should-" A knock sounded on the door, cutting her off. Talon’s turned, guessing who it was. "Come in" The butler entered the room, holding a sleek black box. "Sir, the package you requested for has arrived." Talon’s expression grew serious as he took the box. He then turned back to Halo, holding it out to her. "Before we talk, open this first." Halo blinked, hesitating before reaching for the box. The moment her fingers brushed against it, she felt the weight of whatever was inside. She glanced up at him, confused. Talon only smirked. "You might want to sit down for this."She gingerly sat down on the white sofa closest to her, a few inches from the foot of the bed. She still couldn't push down the pangs of sharing a room, a bed with another person…...a man. She felt the weight of the box on her lap, her eyes looked forward and she bit the side of her lip, curiosity morphing into her features. She wanted to ask what it was but the fronted look Talon gave her showed that he wanted her to open the box herself. Which she did. Her fingers made quick work of the box’s lid as he pulled it off, staring at pile's of neatly stacked files inside the box. Files containing information on Zorro Ashwood. Why did he give her this, and why did this seem important?. Talon saw the confusion on her face and he sat in front of her, crossing his long legs. Dismissing the butler. "Why are you giving your brother's files to me?" Talon paused before leaning towards her, the space between their noses just a little. Halo instinctively leaned backwards, maintaining distance
Talon's lips curved up into a brief smile for a moment, watching as she fumbled for words. The box remained tight against her chest, as if she could use it as a shield between them."You like making me uncomfortable, don’t you?" she muttered. He tilted his head, feigning innocence. "Not at all. I simply like watching you squirm".Halo huffed. "Well, congratulations. If you keep this up you might see a lot of that"Talon chuckled but said nothing more. Instead, he walked toward the minibar at the far side of the bedroom, pouring himself a glass of something brown...... tequila?."Do you drink, I could pour you a glass?" He asked her although he could already assume her response."No, I drank the thing called beer once and it tasted foreign on my taste buds".He said nothing, another smile playing on his lips as he leaned against the wall, watching her. "You just got married to me, won't you at least celebrate?""There's not much to celebrate" she responded without tearing her eyes fro
Talon leaned against the dresser, arms crossed, watching his own reflection with mild frustration. The brush in his hand felt foreign, the lipstick even more so. He had tried. Really, he had. But after a failed attempt at styling Halo’s hair and smudging her eyeliner in a way that made her look like a sleep-deprived raccoon, he accepted defeat. The last time he had done someone’s makeup or hair aside from his, had been for his mother. And that had been years ago while she was still alive. He had always liked helping her do those little things instead of letting the maids do it.Halo had sat still throughout his efforts, though he didn’t miss the flickers of withheld laughs dancing in her eyes. "I didn’t know you were so......determined" she had commented.Talon exhaled through his nose, throwing the makeup brush onto the dresser. “Your hair isn't just agreeing to bend to my will. Neither is your face"Hair like hers wasn't hair he was used to, and he found it frustrating how tangly he
'Talon Ashwood, well renowned billionaire and business mogul, Choosing the lesser twin".Ouch, Halo internally winced. Did they really have to put it that way?"The press, stupid as always"Talon scoffed, his voice not low in any way. Halo pinched his arm. They were in front of a lot of cameras clicking lights at them, he had to be careful with what he said. She didn't want this to turn south.Talon didn't care."Who wrote the headline?"He called out, her fingers resting on his arm and his eyes shooting daggers at the camera. A smile murmured slithered through the crowd. He raised his finger up and gestured for the camera's flashing in his face to be lowered."I repeat, who wrote the headline, the lesser twin it says?""Talon please" Halo cautioned, unsure of what he was planning to do next. No one gave a response, and it looked like he was running out of patience for one."We're leaving" he simply said. She arched a brow, "No, we....we only just got here""And I do not like it here
Halo held the journalist's gaze, her expression unwavering. "What he wanted, he went for. It's as simple as that."A murmur rippled through the room, but she didn't falter. "I don’t find it amusing or acceptable that the press continues to refer to me as 'the lesser twin.' I am just as capable as my sister, if not more. My value isn't determined by how well I fit into a narrative that favors familiarity over individuality."She leaned back slightly, her tone firm. "Talon chose me because he saw what he wanted, and I accepted because I saw an opportunity to build something great. This marriage wasn't about settling or second choices, it was a decision made by two people who knew what they wanted. And I-I won't entertain any more questions that attempt to undermine me or my marriage with my husband"She tilted her head slightly, offering a cool smile. "We're married. We're happy. That's the end of the story."Talon's smirk deepened, his fingers tapping against the armrest. Fuck, her res
The press conference was over, and they were on their way home. But Talon was quiet. Too quiet.Halo noticed it the moment they got into the car. At first, she assumed he was just processing everything, but as the ride stretched on, the silence became unsettling. She, on the other hand, was still buzzing from the adrenaline. "I didn't expect to handle those questions like that," she admitted, glancing at him. "I thought I'd stutter or freeze, but somehow, I managed. It was weird. Sometimes, I zoned out, and sometimes, I thought I'd slip up, but-"She paused, frowning. Talon wasn't reacting. Not even a smirk, a sarcastic remark, nothing. He was staring ahead, his fingers tapping lightly against his thigh, lost in thought.Halo shifted uncomfortably. "Are you even listening?"Talon blinked, as if snapping back to reality. His gaze flickered toward her, unreadable. "Hm?"She narrowed her eyes. "What's with you?""Nothing," he said, too casually. She wasn't convinced, but before she coul
"Halo, this isn't me curating you. I will not deny you the freedom that I promised. I mean, I did say yes to you appearing in the crowd in front of the press with me, right? I am not withholding freedom from you, but this is for your safety. I cannot go into details till I am sure, and I don't think you should know about this for now. But Halo, please, I can't have you or us attend that party".They pulled up in the driveway.Halo stepped out of the car, slammed the door shut, and walked towards the entrance without looking back. The sound of the door echoed in the coming night, sharp and final.Talon sighed and followed after her. He didn't rush. He knew where she was going. The driver remained in his seat, eyes forward, but his grip on the steering wheel tightened. The staff by the entrance exchanged cautious glances, unsure if they should acknowledge the new madam in her current state. Halo unintentionally ignored them all, heading straight up to her destination. She walked in, lea
Talon's smirk faltered, his jaw tightening slightly as he regarded her. "Halo, he said, his voice smooth but firm, "there's a difference between what you're saying and what you're actually suggesting."She tilted her head. "Oh? Enlighten me, then."He took a slow step toward her, closing the space between them. He wasn't angry. If anything, he looked amused, but there was something else, something deeper in the way he watched her."You're my wife," he said simply. "And if you think I'd be fine with you being with another man, then you haven't been paying attention."Halo let out a short laugh. "Right. Because you, on the other hand, can do whatever you want?"Talon exhaled through his nose, his hands slipping into his pockets. "It's not about what I can do," he murmured. "It's about what I want.""And what do you want?"His gaze dropped briefly to her lips before lifting back to her eyes. "You."She stilled.Talon reached out, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear, his touch
Halo hadn't felt anything like this before, she had a mini crush once, so she wasn't a stranger to the feeling of desire. But this......was on a different scale. They had said their goodnights and gone to bed, keeping whatever unfinished conversation for the morning to come. But it wasn't till her eyes snapped open in the middle of the night that she felt someone grinding against her."Sshhh, turn wifey." He whispered as his hips worked quickly against hers. How could she go back to bed like this,His lips were caressing and kissing away at her neck. She was trying to reel in her gasps, feeling weak at the knees."Talon.....what are you doing?""Isn't it obvious?" He cocked a brow, "getting some friction." She felt his palm cover the top of her mounds and she sprang up. That action made Talon to roll over the bed in shock, his mouth was wide and his eyes were apologetic."Shit, I didn't.....I thought -"All this while, he had thought that he was in a dream, he didn't realize he wa
Shortly after Halo left, the back door creaked open again. Karina slipped inside, her jacket slung over one shoulder and a smirk playing on her lips."Forgot something," she purred, closing the door behind her.Talon didn’t argue. He was too conflicted. When Karina approached him, he let her touch him, let her kiss him.But as her hands roamed, Talon found himself holding back. His mind wasn’t on Karina. It was stuck upstairs, behind a locked door where someone he had left upstairs was pretending not to be hurt. After a few strained minutes, Talon pulled away."You should go," he muttered, standing up and grabbing her jacket from the chair.Karina sighed dramatically but didn't argue. She took the jacket, gave him a lazy wink, and slipped out the door without a word. The house fell quiet again.Talon stood there, his hands clenched, before forcing himself eventually to move. He walked upstairs, every step feeling heavier than the last.He hesitated outside the door before then knocked
Halo had found a spare nightwear and fallen asleep in the guest bedroom, expecting to return home later. However, Talon had insisted on spending the night. The new mobile phone Talon had purchased for Halo sat on the bedside table, and Halo had punched in her parent's numbers, accidentally flashing Scarlet instead. When Scarlet called back, her tone was far from happy. As Halo glanced over at Talon, she noticed he was stirring in his sleep. His hands were clasped over his chest, and his knees were drawn up to his torso in a fetal position. Suddenly, Halo heard rushed panicked breaths from Talon, and she was immediately alarmed. She went to his side and lightly shook his shoulders.Talon's green eyes blinked open, glazed over with unshed tears."Are you crying?" She realized it was a stupid question as soon as she saw the tears. Talon stood up from the bed, moving the sheets aside, and muttered, "I'm fine, go back to bed."Halo's confusion and worry grew. "I can't go back to bed, Tal
It didn’t take long.By the time the afternoon sun started dipping into early evening, Chief Rawley arrived with two patrol vans, three officers in dark blue uniforms, and a notepad already filled with scribbled questions.Talon stood at the front door, waiting. Zorro lingered behind him, arms folded, his expression tight. Halo stayed inside the living room, seated, hands clasped together, her gaze flicking between the door and the hallway.Chief Rawley stepped forward. “Mr. Ashwood.”Talon nodded. “Thank you for coming.”The officers moved around the perimeter, entering the kitchen and back corridors. The staff were already lined up in the service hallway, murmuring nervously among themselves. The butler stood straight and sharp. The cook who’d peeked out earlier was pale, avoiding everyone’s gaze.“Your report said murder,” Rawley said under his breath as he stepped aside with Talon. “We’ll need the doctor's findings in full before making this official.”“Doctor Greg is ready to coo
Talon sat on the bench just outside the manor, staring blankly into the trees with his arms crossed. The doctor had come with the ambulance an hour ago. They took his father's body, wrapped it, covered it respectfully, and carried it out of the house. Zorro had watched them leave, his face tear-streaked. Halo stood quietly, a few feet away from Talon, watching him, but not coming too close. She wanted to at least offer comfort to him.But he didn’t want comfort. He didn't want to hear her soothing voice,He didn’t want pity or soft words.,He wanted silence. The doctor lingered behind. Talon had just opened his mouth to ask about the official report, stroke, heart failure, anything that could be written off as a natural death. But Dr. Gregg had hesitated, then gestured for Talon to follow him away from the others."I need to speak to you. Alone," the doctor said.Talon stepped onto the balcony with the doctor following behind him."What is it?"Dr. Gregg looked over his shoulder, the
Zorro stood in the center of the room, his face a mask of controlled fury. He paced back and forth, shocked and annoyed."There is no way Esil would hand over the shares to you just like that, she is my wife, how would she hand over the shares to you."Muttering under his breath, He lifted his phone and tried dialing Esil's number. The phone rang once, then twice, but the call went unanswered. The message on his screen read 'Number busy.' Frustration mounting, he switched apps and attempted to text Esil directly. His texts would not deliver. Even his social media messages bounced back to him: it seemed Esil had blocked him."She blocked me? She blocked me?!" he repeated in disbelief, his voice rising in anger.Determined to get an answer, he called Esil's sister. The call went straight to voicemail. He then tried reaching Esil's uncle, and again there was no answer. Not willing to give up, he called Esil's mother, but still, nothing. He paced furiously, kicking the leg of the dining
The boy sat between them in the backseat, his fingers still sticky with sugar from the cookies he'd devoured at the orphanage. Talon didn’t say much during the drive. Halo glanced at him now and then, noting how he kept checking the rearview mirror, not out of caution, but to glance at the kid. They pulled into a wide stone driveway. A house stood ahead, elegant yet warm, vines curling up one side and flowerbeds neatly trimmed along the porch. There was an old bronze wind chime at the entrance, swaging softly in the wind. The scent of something sweet baking could be smelt from an open window.Halo stepped out first, scanning the peaceful surroundings. Talon opened the door for the boy, who stepped out hesitantly, holding onto the edge of Talon's jacket. The door creaked open before they could knock. An elderly man with a thick grey mustache and sleep in his eyes stepped out, blinking at the sunlight. He straightened when he saw Talon."Ashwood. You're a sight.""Eli. Sorry to drop i
Talon picked up his phone and dialed Esil while the boy sat quietly beside him. The orphanage caretaker accepted his card without a word and hurried off to bring the boy snacks and a big meal. The little one was clearly a foodie. His eyes lit up when he saw the plate of treats, and he eagerly dug in. Halo watched him from where she stood, feeling an unexpected fondness well up inside her. She had never been close to children, but there was something about his innocent enthusiasm that captivated her.The boy looked up at Talon and Halo as he munched on his food and said in a soft, cheerful tone, "I never expected this much, thank you." "You're most welcome." Halo responded in a quiet tone.Talon, noticing her softened expression, sat beside her. He engaged the boy in small talk, asking about his favorite food and making silly faces that drew genuine laughter from the child.Halo listened as the boy answered in a clear, high voice, his excitement infectious. She didn't expect him to
Talon narrowed his eyes. "What do you mean?" he asked.Halo frowned. "What if your father gave it to Esil so you’d have a chance to take it before she hands it over?"Talon's jaw tightened. The idea had not crossed his mind before. At first he assumed his father was being theatrical, stirring unnecessary tension, but Halo had a point. If Zorro was meant to have the shares, there was no reason to go through Esil at all unless my father wanted an alternative. He muttered, "Esil is loyal to Zorro. She won't keep the shares from him."Halo shrugged. "Maybe not. But this gives you a window. She has them now, not him."Talon glanced down at the empty plate in his hand. His father was a cunning man who never made a move without reason. If this was a test, it meant he had not completely written Talon off yet. That sliver of uncertainty was all he needed to act.His eyes darkened with determination. "Then I need to get to Esil before Zorro does."The question remainedHow?A memory flashed in
