LOGINChapter 6
Unexpected Rescue
Dave's POV
"You should understand that this is a free meal, which everyone would gladly take," Katherine's adoptive father said, with no shame at all. "You can't truly reject..."
"Oh, I think you failed to comprehend something here."
The very moment I cut in before he could finish, everywhere became dead silent. I slowly removed my phone from my ear, secured it inside my pocket, before staring hard at the man before me. Surprisingly, his eyes which were filled with mockery just moments ago, but now all I could see were uncertainty, and that's very good.
Beside me, Katherine was no longer herself, as she looked frozen. Her eyes were swollen, which is from crying too much, her cheeks with stains from her tears, and I could see her shaking slightly. But in all of that, she was trying so hard to cover up, not to break again.
That also irritated me. Though not actually her, but the entire family that put her through such. The audacity of waking up one random morning to throw her out like she's just trash still baffles me.
My gaze shifted a little, until they landed on Diana. The same Diana that didn't look back when she suddenly exited my life, with no explanations, after making promises of loving me forever. I had consoled myself, thought maybe she had her reasons, or maybe life happened, and she couldn't keep up. Or that I wasn't enough for her.
But right now, I couldn't help but be amused at my orn foolishness, of wanting her in my life then. She left without looking back, and that's because my father list his company. And in her mind, I had gone broke, very poor with nothing to my name.
How pathetic of her.
"You are too dumb to hold regard for your biological daughter," I completely coldly.
Diana scoffed, still not understanding the turn of event. "And if I must ask, what exactly can you offer Katherine? Don't you know that broke men has no business speaking proudly, as they might be talking to their helper?'
Katherine shot her a hard glance. "Can you stop spilling trash from your mouth already?"
"No, leave her to continue disgracing herself," I said the most calmest way.
I wanted to expose them, everything about them.
But no, Diana didn't see that. Her arrogant attitude wouldn't let her know when to stop. She folded her arms proudly, as she continued arguing blindly. "You think because you are driving burrowed luxury means, you should be accorded any respect? My father was kind enough to investigate your family when we were still together, and the discoveries shock me. Your father went bankrupt, even on his sick bed before his death, leaving you empty. So, you're nothing."
That made Katherine to look at me, feeling very guilty already that she brought the insults on me. I could tell with the look on her face she thought Diana's words hurt me. It used to, because I loved her, but not anymore.
I have come to realize that those who are short sighted enough to measure worth with money, are usually the poorest humans alive.
Saying that to make me feel bad, his father followed it with a loud laugher. "Young Man, you still have a long way to go. But don't forget that pride doesn't feed people. Since you already slept with the whore Katherine, you might as well take responsibility."
"Dad!" Katherine snapped instantly.
"No, allow him speak freely," I said again.
But why talk about responsibility? Was she a burden to them in anyway? I glanced at Katherine, only to see how devastated she was.
And strangely...
That feeling that had been disturbing me inside my chest returned again. It was the same feeling that almost made me helpless when I watched her cry last night in front of me in that club.
As u stared at her, the strange urge to protect her, to have her in my arms couldn't let me be. I barely knew anything about this woman, yet, the thought of her getting hurt is already driving me crazy.
"She isn't some responsibility as you put it," I said firmly. The entire room went silent again, as Katherine slowly locked eyes with me. I saw the shock in her eyes, the disbelief that I would be defending her that much.
But her shameless father cleared his throat awkwardly, drawing our attention back. "Well... regardless, she can still go with you. Let her forget about Felix, because he's now with Diana."
The mention of that name made me almost lose control. And to think the bastard had been standing there the whole time, saying nothing? How can he comfortably watch Katherine suffer, someone he claimed to have loved?
He just stood there like a coward, just do he could get approval to date their broken favorite daughter.
I moved a few steps toward him. "That's interesting."
This made Felix frown, as he wasn't expecting me to face him. "What exactly is your problem?"
"You want to know my problem so badly?' I asked, but calmly.
"Yes," he snapped. "You showed up suddenly, and started interfering in family matters that isn't your business."
I smiled, because he had no idea he was the one that invited me in the moment he pushed her into my arms.
"You shamelessly slept with the sister, and got welcomed into the family afterward, and you are rejoicing?"
That made him stiff, as he never expected that. But I wasn't done with him. "You foolishly cheated on the woman who genuinely loved you."
Katherine lowered her eyes, and I wished she didn't. "And right now, you shamelessly stand there while arrangements are being made to throw her out?"
Felix clenched her fist, but couldn't even as much as come an inch closer to me. "Watch your tone right now!"
"Or what would happen?"
But Diana rushed to hold him, trying to calm him down. "Felix, don't let him get to you. You and I know those cars are rented. This is him trying so hard to impress, but acting rich."
I almost laughed at her foolishness. Rented? But before I could reply her, the front door opened, and five men in black suits walked in.
Katherine's POV Penelope sighed again, even more dramatic than she was before."Please don't say that to me."Those were Fake concern, fake innocence, pretending to be the best of all. Yet the women immediately comforted her, not me, showing how low they think. Aunt Vivian shook her head, like she was tbd victim and not me."Penelope, everyone knows the truth."I frowned at their display of concern, their dramatic self on show. What truth are they talking about? The older woman continued what she was saying. "You loved Dave so dearly like yourself."My stomach started boiling in anger at their stupidity. "And everyone expected you to marry him not a complete stranger."Penelope lowered her head, using the opportunity to play the victim perfectly."I made mistakes."Aunt Vivian hugged her to herself, to console her like a mother would to a her child."We all do my dear."I couldn't believe what I was watching before me. It felt ridiculous. Then Penelope whispered softly, but I sti
Katherine's POV "Knowing this happened because of you."The words hit hard, as I was not expecting such from her. I know she's mean, but to this extent, rubbing everything on my face so I won't survive the guilt? Penelope noticed immediately that her words worked, so she smiled. Because that was exactly what she wanted, to break me into pieces. What a cruel woman."He saved you from getting killed"She sighed dramatically, adding more exaggeration to it. "Poor Dave."Anger slowly rose inside me as I listened to her speak. "Leave here right now."Her eyes widened, like she wasn't expecting me to stand up for myself against her abuse. "Excuse me?""You heard me right"She laughed softly, pushing me beyond my limit. "I was only stating facts, which you are very much aware of."I stood up again, ready to push her out before end make me run mad."Leave here."The room suddenly became tense, and of course, Penelope's smile vanished. That was the beginning of the interesting part of ou
Katherine's POV Penelope's Return Game"And when you wake up..."My voice broke. "...you can yell at me for getting involved."Still, he said nothing and I smiled sadly. I couldn't think straight, as everything about me was crowded with the thought of him not making it at last. Unable to concentrate, I lowered my head beside his hand as I was already exhausted. Maybe just a few minutes because I found myself taking a nap, but I was startled and I woke up the next second. I glanced up slowly, looked down with my eyes wide open. Dave's fingers had moved, but it was just once, and brely noticeable, but somehow, I saw it. I know what my eyes saw. My heart exploded non stop inside my chest."Dave?"But there was no answer. I sat upright immediately."Dave!"Was I imagining things? Was I hallucinating from lack of sleep? Then suddenly, like a miracle, his fingers twitched again. And this time...I wasn't the only one who saw it. Because the heart monitor beside him suddenly started beepin
Katherine's POV "Know what exactly?"She looked toward Dave, then back at me."Katherine."Her smile widened, and I couldn't help but wonder if they were genuine. "That man is hopelessly gone for you."My heart skipped violently, as that was the least thing I was expecting to hear from her. "What?"Evelyn laughed out loud. "Oh my God."I stared at her, and she stared back at me. Then suddenly laughed harde again."What is it?"I repeated, hoping to get a better response "You really don't see it.""See what exactly?""The way he looks at you."My face heated instantly she mentioned that."Evelyn.""No seriously."She grinned, and I wondered how she was able to pull up that comic side of her in this situation, acting all calm at the same time, when I was almost gobd with panic attack. "The man worships the ground you walk on.""That's ridiculous, and you can't be joking with such.""It isn't."I looked away, because hearing those words felt dangerous, very dangerous to me. My marri
Katherine's POV"Mrs. Laurent, you should get some rest. You have tried already."I looked up immediately, only to see the nurse standing beside the hospital bed give me a sympathetic smile. It was meant to comfort me, as she meant no harm, but I hated that smile.People only gave that smile when something was wrong, and there was nothing that could be done to stop it. When someone was suffering, and they pitied you.And right now, I didn't want pity. All I wanted was for Dave to wake up."I'm fine," I replied quietly, not ready to drag the conversation further. The nurse glanced at the untouched food on the table. "You haven't eaten anything.""I'm not hungry.""You haven't slept either."I looked away from her stare, as that was true. For complete three days, Dave had been unconscious. Three long days without opening his eyes. Three miserable nights of leaving me all alone. Three days of hearing machines beep endlessly like he would never come back again. Three days of staring at h
Almost Killed Katherine's POV "Katherine."I forced a polite smile, trying to act pleased seeing them. "Diana."She looked me over slowly, then laughed. The kind that is very irritating, and annoying at the same time. "I heard you got lucky."My smile disappeared before I knew it. There's no need showing her this side of me that I already buried deep the day I left them for good."What does that mean?""Oh come on. You are not a baby anymore, you should understand this without stress."She waved dismissively like it was nothing. "Let's not pretend, this isn't new anymore."Her voice became louder, now drawing attention of those close to us, exactly as she intended, always wanting to play the victim card. When in real life, she's very horrible. "You married a billionaire and escaped being homeless." Several nearby guests exchanged uncomfortable glances the moment she said that. I felt heat rising inside me, not embarrassment, and honestly, there was nothing I could do then not to
Chapter 8Uncertainty Katherine's POV “Katherine… would you actually consider marrying me?”The moment I heard that from him, my breath completely hitched. As I stood there, thinking of what he just said to me, Dave's eyes never left me. They remained glued on me, like I would disappear if he as
Chapter 7Dave's POV I almost laughed at her foolishness. Rented? But before I could reply her, the front door opened, and five men in black suits walked in. At that point, Katherine's family stood upright, with their eyes almost bulging out in shock. One of my guards came closer and bowed slight
CHAPTER FIVE.Saving Katherine Katherine's POV I woke up with the rays of the early morning sunshine, and it was so pleasing to my eyes.I saw him sitting on the second couch next to me.“Good morning.” He was the first person to initiate a greeting, and I responded with a cool smile on my face.
CHAPTER FOUR.A Night to Remember Katherine's POV The cup slipped exactly on my cloth as he grasped it from me, the contents pouring on the floor. I looked up to see who did that and maybe that would be the end of finding who to pour the whole anger on.At his gaze, I was speechless; he looked s
