The cry still echoed in my ears when I saw her.

Mrs. Clove lay sprawled across the velvet runner of the auction floor, her jeweled brooch crooked, her lips tinted an unnatural shade of blue. It was almost cruel how the chandeliers above blazed down on her lifeless body, their golden glow merciless in its beauty. For one horrific moment, all I could think was how wrong it looked. Death beneath crystal light, beneath the grand illusions of wealth and power.

“She was poisoned!” the woman who had burst in wailed, wringing her hands. “I saw her drink the glass! And then… then she just—”

Her sobs broke into incoherent noise, but the words had already spread like wildfire.

My stomach turned.

Around me, the murmurs rose, as others made sharp theories, colliding like sparks. Suspicion leapt from mouth to mouth. Faces turned pale, then dark with accusation.

Damon’s hand closed firmly around my arm, tugging me back a step, shielding me instinctively as the crowd’s soft whispers sharpened into ba

(Damon's POV)The conference room was already too loud when I stepped inside. I could hear the rumble of complaints before I even entered. Sharp, irritated voices were bouncing off the glass walls like they owned the place. Theo walked beside me, tablet tucked to his chest, posture straight as ever, but even he looked like he wanted to turn around and pretend we’d walked into the wrong meeting.Three clients stood near the projection screen, arguing with each other instead of with us. Two more sat stiffly at the table. One sighed dramatically, as if carrying the weight of the world or just his own ego. Their wives sat beside them, some scrolling on their phones, others watching their husbands with bored expressions.I inhaled slowly. This was going to be a nightmare.Theo whispered, “Good luck, sir.”I shot him a glare. “You’re coming with me.”He winced but followed. The moment I stepped forward, one of the men—a tall, balding CEO named Rourke—threw his hands up. “Finally! Reeves, we

  • A private deal with the billionaire ceo   CHAPTER 152

(Emma’s POV)It had been two days since I started working again in Damon’s company but things were different now. This time I wasn't an intern, but an actual staff member with a badge, a desk, and authority stamped right next to my name. I thought that meant he would treat me professionally during work hours.I was very wrong.Even from the moment I walked in on the first morning, I realized nothing about Damon had changed except the fact that he was anything but subtle about our relationship. He was even worse at pretending he wasn’t constantly watching me. It was like he was announcing to everyone that he wanted me close. And the crazy part was… I wasn’t sure I wanted him to hide it.Not that I’d ever admit that. The meetings were the worst. Or the best. Depending on how fragile my self-control felt that day. This morning’s meeting, for example, was pure torture.I sat down at the conference table, sliding into an empty seat with my files tucked neatly in front of me. Damon entered

(Damon’s POV)The headquarters was always so quiet before dawn.I walked through the west wing with a tablet in one hand and tension sitting between my shoulder blades. The weapon logs were updated, the patrol rotation was finalized, the surveillance room had been checked twice. Still, my chest felt tight, as if something in the air waited to snap.Everywhere I walked, I felt the stares.Soft whispers, eyes quickly averting when I looked in their direction. They all knew Emma was alive. News traveled fast, even in a place built on secrets. But the tension wasn’t happiness. It was fear, confusion… and the silent judgment that I had become “compromised.”I ignored every single one of them and kept walking. When I reached the training bay, the lights flickered on automatically. The sound echoed across the empty space, my boots hitting the floor, the faint hum of machinery, my own breathing. And then a voice, cold as metal, said “Reeves.”I didn’t turn immediately. But when I did, Command

(Emma’s POV)I couldn’t stop smiling like an idiot. It was embarrassing, truly. I kept telling myself to calm down, to breathe normally, to stop pacing around my room with my hands pressed over my cheeks. But the moment I paused, the memory of Damon’s voice, so deep and irresistibly confident, teased my brain.“Then let me take you out properly.”Those words sounded way more romantic in my head. My stomach flipped again, warm and giddy, the flutter of butterflies taking full control.I lay back on the bed and covered my face with a pillow, kicking my legs like a teenager. “Get it together,” I whispered into the soft cotton. I was too old to be acting like this, too broken, too confused about half of my life… and yet here I was, blushing like Damon Reeves had just asked me to the prom. But it wasn’t just shyness or nervous excitement. It was something deeper. Something that pulsed through my bones, something I couldn’t shake. It was my memories.More and more of them have been coming i

  • A private deal with the billionaire ceo   CHAPTER 149

(Damon's POV)I didn’t mean to hover. That was what I told myself every morning, even as I found new ways to stay close to Emma without giving myself away. I told myself I was being responsible. Careful. Professional. But the truth was simpler and far more pathetic:I couldn’t stay away.Ever since she let me take her to see her mother, ever since she looked at me with that mix of confusion and yearning and I kissed her that night, something in me refused to loosen its grip. I’d spent so long living like a ghost after losing her. Now that she was alive again, even if she didn’t fully remember the man I’d been to her, I couldn’t go back to that hollow quiet. So I stayed near her.Too near.I drove her home after work. I lingered in her doorway. I pretended I was checking in on “reports” whenever I found an excuse to be in her office. I walked by during her lunch break, feigning coincidence so badly I almost cringed at myself. She noticed. Of course she did.And instead of pushing me aw

  • A private deal with the billionaire ceo   CHAPTER 148

(Emma’s POV)“W-welcome, Emma.”Her eyes looked surprised but were heavy with recognition.“Hello?” I muttered, unsure of the situation. Before I could say more, she burst into tears and hugged me. My heart stuttered.“It's been so long. I've been waiting for this moment.”She suddenly spun me around as if to check for scratches or any injuries. When she looked up, she saw my dumbfounded expression and laughed.“Oh, I'm sorry. Where are my manners? I'm Alice. Alice Mayweather. I was your best friend.”I had a best friend?“You might not remember me but I will always be here to help you out and answer any questions you might have.”I smiled now. “Okay, I will.”We talked about many things. I told her about how I got rescued and came to the city then she told me about how she and her boyfriend, Abel started dating. Apparently, I was also good friends with him. I vaguely recalled him in my dreams too. Damon just watched us talk. His expression was dazed, like he was dreaming. I didn't wa
