GABRIELLE’S POV

The sound echoed in the room, muffling my hearing for a few seconds.

My ear rang.

The echo of the shot still vibrated in my chest. My hands shook, my knees threatening to give out under me.

But when I opened my eyes, Emily was lying on the floor and Damon was standing behind her, gun in hand.

“Emily?” I whispered, my voice breaking.

He just stared down at her, his gun still raised, and his jaw tight and unreadable. I wanted to move to check her pulse, but my body refused to move.

My eyes darted to the hollow in her shoulder blade.

There was… blood.

I gasped.

“Damon!” I screamed, finally breaking free of my frozen fear. “What did you do?”

He slowly lowered the gun, his expression calm. “She’s fine,” he said, casually. “For now. Call the ambulance in time and she might survive. There’s a hospital a few blocks from here.”

Emily’s eyes were slightly open, staring up at me but her body was limp and she was barely breathing. I scrambled to pic

GABRIELLE’S POV My hand fell from the door handle. My heartbeat was so loud I thought she could hear it. “Emily?” My voice barely came out. She stepped inside without waiting for permission, brushing past me like she couldn’t stand the sight of me. “Surprised?” she asked, tilting her head. “You didn’t think I’d just let you disappear?” I blinked at her. “What are you doing here?” Her gaze flicked to the elevator behind me. “Take me upstairs. Now. We need to talk.” My fingers twitched beside my thigh. I wanted to close the door. I wanted to grab her by the arm and throw her out. But all I could do was stand there and stare at her. My sister. The one person whom I had put before anyone else. Including myself. “Didn’t you hear me? Take me upstairs,” she repeated, stepping closer. “We need to talk.” I didn’t move. Her jaw tightened. “Don’t make this hard, Gabby. Don’t fucking push me.” I swallowed and turned toward the elevator. She followed right behind

GABRIELLE’S POV Anya raised her head. “Ah, Gabrielle. You look rough. Are you good?” I stood by the door, my hand gripping tightly around the door knob. “I’m fine. Just wondering what’s happening here.” She stood up and walked over the closet room. “Didn’t Lila tell you her birthday was coming up?” “Yay! Birthday,” Lila squealed in her father’s arm. Damon flipped through her storybook, obviously not interested in the conversation. Anya walked back into the room. “So I decided to come stay here for a few days. She always celebrates her birthday her with her daddy and her friends.” Oh. That made sense. But something about it didn’t seem right with me. “That’s very nice,” I said, watching her check her reflection in the mirror. “When did you get here? I can have Susan clean up one of rooms for you.” She waved her hand at me. “Nonsense. I’m not a guest, Gabrielle. You don’t have to host me. I once lived here too.” Her words hit something in my chest. I look

  • ACCIDENTALLY MARRIED TO THE BILLIONAIRE SINGLE DAD   CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

GABRIELLE’S POV Damon walked ahead of me into the plane, taking my Birkin from me after muttering under his breath about how I was slowing us down. I wore a hoodie and sweat pants, and a big, dark sunglass covered half my face. I couldn’t let anyone see the dark circles from crying all night. Especially Damon. “You can rest in the room, Gabrielle. There’s a bed there so you can get some sleep before we land,” he said, opening the door to said room for me. It was a luxurious master bedroom in the nose of the jet. “This room wasn’t here before,” I said. “That was a different plane,” he responded, dropping my bag on the bed. “A cheaper one. You couldn’t sleep last night?” I lay on the bed without taking the glasses off. “I slept well,” I lied. He didn’t respond. I watched him arrange our bags and my mind briefly went to the day before. He was right. I shouldn’t care about Emily anymore but I just couldn’t help it. She was not just my only sibling, she

  • ACCIDENTALLY MARRIED TO THE BILLIONAIRE SINGLE DAD   CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

GABRIELLE’S POV I faced him slowly, my face still teary. I had put the call on speaker mid-conversation with Jared, and I knew he must have heard that last line. He stepped closer and his cologne filled my senses. The look on his face couldn’t be described as annoyed. Angry was also an understatement. He had warned me never to speak about Jared or say his name again, but what I did was worse. I spoke to him. I swallowed and took some steps back nervously until my waist hit the sink. “I didn’t… Damon…” I breathed. He tilted his head slightly, his voice so cold it made my skin crawl. “That was your ex, right?” I nodded. “Yes, it was Ja— I mean, yes. That was him.” He didn’t respond. He stood there staring at me, his jaw tight and his fist clenched like he was holding himself back. “I didn’t call him, he called me. And my sister was missing—,” I trailed off, realizing how pathetic and weak I sounded even to my own ears. “Why does he still have access to

  • ACCIDENTALLY MARRIED TO THE BILLIONAIRE SINGLE DAD   CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

GABRIELLE’S POV The night went away but the feeling remained. Today was a new day so I decided to get my ass out of bed and try new things after Damon left for his meeting. “I can’t believe you gave the staff the day off. Damon is a lucky man to have a good cook for a wife,” Fiorella said as we got out of the car. I almost laughed. “I’m not a good cook. In fact, I almost burned down Father’s house one time I tried making eggs.” She turned to me. “Who fucks up eggs?” “Me.” “How?” “Now, you have the right to be curious as to how that happened but I’ll be taking that one to my grave.” She smiled but didn’t press. We entered the kitchen where I would be attempting to make Damon alfredo pasta. Fiorella dropped the grocery bags on the kitchen counter before lighting up a joint she pulled from her pocket. I frowned. “Really? Smoking pot in the kitchen after I told you I almost burnt down the house trying to cook?” She shrugged. “Damon can buy another house.”
