112. River

"Please look after Ashleigh for a bit. I need to find Gideon and talk to him," Avla told Tanner.

Tanner nodded in understanding, gently taking Ashleigh into his arms as Avla transformed into her wolf form. Her figure blurred as she dashed into the forest, following the trail she believed Gideon had taken.

Her paws swiftly carried her to the river, where she suspected Gideon might be seeking solace. The area appeared deserted until Gideon emerged from the water.

Communicating mentally, Avla couldn't hide her astonishment. "Ok, seriously? Swimming? That's why you ran off from me?" she probed.

Gideon's mental voice came back, calm yet distant. "I just needed to clear my head, Avla."

With a sigh, Avla shifted back, the cool night air wrapping around her. "Can you shift back, too? We need to talk," she urged.

He hesitated, then replied mentally, "No, not right now."

Understanding his need yet seeking closeness, Avla offered a compromise. "Ok then, come over here and at least warm me up?"
