Chapter Forty-Six

****

The morning sun bled through the stained-glass windows of the training hall. I stood in the center of the arena, sweat dripping down my eyes. Jason tapped me on the shoulder, grinning, his sword still in hand.

“Almost had you that time,” he said, wiping his brow. “But you’re getting faster and smarter.”

I forced a smile. “Yeah. Just… tired.”

Truth was, I didn't sleep last night. Not really. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the door. Felt its cold bite. Heard Morwen whisper my name like a verdict.

You’ll come back. You can’t stay away.

And now, as I stepped out of the training hall, the weight of that promise pressed down on me like a stone.

“Aria.”

The voice came from behind.

I turned.

One of the senior acolytes,Lira stood in the archway, her posture was rigid, her expression unreadable. “Headmistress Morwen requests your presence. Immediately.”

My stomach dropped.

Now?

Jason frowned. “What does she want?”

Lira didn’t answer. She just turned and walked away.

Chapter Fifty-Two****The next morning,no one spoke of the alarms. No one questioned Morwen’s fury. The sentries doubled. The lower halls were sealed with fresh wards crimson sigils that pulsed like veins beneath the stone. But I knew the truth. She wasn’t sealing the academy. She was trapping it.And she was watching me more closely than ever.I could feel it,the weight of her eyes, even when I was alone. The way the air thickened when I passed her tower. The way the shadows seemed to hesitate, as if they knew they were being spied on.But I had already moved beyond her sight.Because while she watched the crypt, the dorms, and the corridors…I was hunting something older.Something she thought no one would ever find.It started with a name.Scratched into the base of a crumbling pillar in the abandoned east wing: “Elira.”Not in the academy’s records. Not in the archives. But in the same hand that had marked my training blade with a hidden sigil weeks ago.I traced the letters. And

Chapter Fifty-One****Headmistress Morwen thought she had control. She thought her mirror showed her the truth. She thought Lira was loyal. She thought I was waiting. But I wasn’t waiting.I was moving. And I was ahead. At exactly 1:13 a.m., the first ward failed.Deep in the west archive, where Jason had planted false trails laced with residual fire-magic, the seal on the ancient chest scattered, not from force, but from decay. A slow, calculated unraveling. The kind that looked like natural failure. Not sabotage. The alarm didn’t sound. But the tracking thread moved. In her tower, Morwen was alerted. She turned to the scrying mirror.“Aria?” she whispered. But the image showed me still in my bed, breathing slow, eyes closed.Asleep.Lira’s voice came through the ether a moment later, calm, precise.“She hasn’t moved. No magic detected.”Morwen frowned. Then she turned to the west archive feed,a secondary scrying pane, smaller and darker. The one only she could access. There, she saw

Chapter Fifty****After the confrontation in the training yard, the eastern tower stood like a blade against the moonless sky.Inside, behind closed doors veiled in silence, Morwen stood before a mirror of black obsidian, its surface not reflecting her face, but the shining image of me.Aria.Sleeping.Or so it seemed.“She’s dreaming,” Morwen murmured, her fingers tracing the edge of the glass. “Of fire. Of stone. Of the door.”Lira stood in the shadows, silent with her hands folded.“She hasn’t moved from her dorm,” Lira reported. “No magic detected. No breaches. The tracking thread remains quiet.”Morwen didn’t turn. “She’s clever. But she’s not invisible.”She stepped closer to the mirror. “From now on, you watch her. Not just her steps. Not just her words. Everything.”Lira hesitated. “Even in private?”“Especially in private,” Morwen said, voice like ice. “I want to know when she wakes. When she eats. Who she speaks to. What books she reads. If she breathes differently.”Lira sw

Chapter Forty-Nine:****The next morning, the training grounds were cold, no warmth in the sun, no mercy in the wind. The air was with tension. We stood in formation, rows of acolytes in black and gray, swords at our sides. The scent of damp earth and iron was heavy, but under it, was fear. Not fear of drills. Not fear of punishment. But fear of her.Headmistress Morwen came down the stairs from the eastern tower like a shadow. Her cloak billowed behind her, midnight blue edged with silver thread that shone like frozen flame. Her boots struck the stone with deliberate precision. There was silence immediately.Even the wind stilled. She stopped at the center of the arena, her eyes scanning up,cold, calculating, and hungry.“Last night,” she began, voice low but carrying thunder, “someone disturbed the west archive. Someone broke a sacred seal. Someone triggered an alarm meant for invasions, for war, for betrayal.”Her eyes swept the line.No one moved. No one breathed.“And do you know

Chapter Forty-Eight****The plan was simple.Dangerous.Perfect.We moved like smoke through the upper corridors,Jason and Kael were ahead, I was behind, heart hammering against my ribs. Every instinct screamed to run, to vanish into the lower halls, to answer the pull that still throbbed in my bones. But I held back.Because this time, I wasn’t running to the door.I was running around it.“The junior dorms,” Jason whispered as we reached the west wing. “We need someone who won’t ask questions. Someone Morwen won’t suspect.”Kael nodded. “Lena. She’s small. Fast. And she owes me for covering her during the fire trial.”We found her asleep, curled under a threadbare blanket. Jason shook her gently. She blinked awake. “What?”“No time to explain,” Kael said, pressing a small vial into her hand. “Go to the west archive. Break the seal on the old warding chest. When the alarm sounds, run. Don’t look back.”Her eyes widened. “But that’ll bring the sentries”“Exactly,” I said. “That’s the

Chapter Forty-Seven****I didn’t sleep.Since the moment the door to Morwen’s office shut behind me, something inside me cracked open and now, it wouldn’t close.I lay in my bed, fully dressed and very restless.Come.Come back. She is waiting. But not the one you think. The voice wasn’t words. It was a sensation. A pull in my blood, and a fire low in my belly. The door was calling me. Not with sound, but with memory and hunger. And I wanted to answer it.I sat up. I wrapped my cloak around my shoulders and sneaked out of the dorm. The halls were empty. The night watch had passed. Torches shone low, casting long, trembling shadows. I moved like a ghost through the east wing, down the forgotten stairwell, past the sealed arch where the runes still glowed faintly blue.My heart pounded.Almost there.Just a few more turns.Then....“Aria.”The voice came from the side passage.I stopped.Kael stepped into the dim light, arms crossed, Jason followed, his expression tight.“What are you do
