Chapter 2

Penulis: That's All
Even the smallest mistake would earn me a beating and a barrage of insults from my adoptive parents.

Education was my only chance at a better life, so I studied harder than anyone else and always ranked first in my class.

But none of that mattered. When I was in eighth grade, my adoptive parents forced me to drop out, claiming they couldn't afford to keep paying for my education when my two younger brothers still needed to go to school.

I was only 14 and still growing, but I had no choice but to join the adults in my village on construction sites, hauling steel bars and mixing cement. I also took jobs at restaurants, washing dishes and waiting tables.

Every penny I earned went straight to my adoptive parents, who spent it all on my two younger brothers.

Then one day, a police officer investigating my parentage tracked me down and told me I was the biological son of the Ashfords, the richest family in the country.

At first, I could hardly believe it. I'd thought my years of suffering were finally over. I'd finally be free of my adoptive parents and their constant exploitation.

More than anything, I would finally have a family who genuinely loved and cared about me.

Instead, I'd walked straight into another nightmare.

I watched Josh trembling as he clutched Evelyn's arm, struggling to speak through his tears. "Mom, Dad, I know Asher is your biological son, and I know I'll never be as important to you as he is. But that doesn't mean he can just lie about what happened..."

He was deliberately making it sound like I hated him for taking my place in the family. Worse, he was implying that I'd made up the story about never attending high school just to cover up what I'd done to him.

Graham took the bait and exploded. "Asher! You're still denying it? After all this? I can't believe I have a son like you!"

Evelyn joined in. "You may have grown up poor, but that's no excuse for being such a rotten person! Apologize to Josh right now, or don't even think about coming home with us!"

The murmurs around us grew louder. People pointed at me, making no effort to hide their contempt.

"What do you expect from someone raised in the middle of nowhere? No manners, no decency. He should go right back where he came from!"

"He bullied the Ashfords' adopted son, and now he's lying about it! I can't believe that's the son they went to all that trouble to find!"

"Poor Josh. First he gets bullied, and now that same bully is trying to turn everyone against him…"

Hearing the insults and watching Graham and Evelyn stand there defending Josh, I finally lost all hope of ever having a family with them.

They were my birth parents, but neither of them had even tried to hear me out. They'd refused to believe a single word I said.

I gave a bitter laugh, fighting back tears. I looked them both in the eye and said, "Why should I apologize for something I didn't do? You keep calling me your son, but you don't know the first thing about my life.

"You haven't even tried to get to know me, and you won't believe a word I say. If this is the kind of family you're offering me, I want no part of it!"

Graham was furious. He raised his hand, ready to slap me. "You ungrateful little brat! Say that again! I dare you!"

But just as he was about to slap me, Josh rushed forward and threw himself between us.

"Dad, please don't hit him!" he sobbed. "It's all my fault! I shouldn't have brought up what happened back then! Please don't be mad at him!"

Josh pretended to defend me, but he deliberately angled his face toward the cameras, making sure everyone saw just how upset he was as he stood up for his supposed bully.

Sure enough, the reporters rushed to get a better shot of him, and the crowd's comments grew even nastier.

Everyone was calling me an ungrateful brat, accusing me of bullying someone as kind as Josh and saying I didn't deserve to be an Ashford.

I wanted nothing more than to walk away from all of it. But I knew I couldn't leave without clearing my name. If I didn't prove my innocence now, I'd be labeled a bully for the rest of my life.

By the time I tried to defend myself again, everyone would have already made up their minds, and no one would bother listening.

I'd had enough of Josh's act. I looked him straight in the eye and said coldly, "Josh, you keep saying I bullied you in high school. Then tell me, what class was I in? Who was our homeroom teacher? And who sat next to me in class?"

Evelyn began, "Last time, you said we never raised you. I've been thinking about that a lot, and you're right."We didn't. We weren't there for any of those 19 years. While you were struggling to survive, I was living comfortably. I had a big house, nice clothes, vacations overseas…"I sent Josh to the best schools. And all that time, I had no idea you were going hungry or sleeping in the cold. I was wrong to yell at you at the train station that day. I never should've said those things."She wiped at the corners of her eyes. "I don't expect you to forgive me. I just... I needed to tell you that."She set the insulated bag on the ground, then turned and headed back to her car.As I watched her walk away, a memory from years ago came back to me.When I was little, back in the countryside, I used to sleep in a woodshed during the winter. Some nights, I'd wake up shivering and lie there staring at the thin strip of moonlight coming through a crack in the window.I would wonder what

I turned to face Evelyn. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, lighting up her exhausted face.I almost told her we were practically strangers anyway. But then I saw her bloodshot eyes and hesitated."Maybe someday," I said.I rented a small one-bedroom apartment with a living room. When the sun came in, the whole place felt warm.My landlady was an older woman who knocked 200 dollars off the rent when she found out I would be living alone. On the day I moved in, she showed up at my door with a bowl of beef stew. She said it wasn't easy being young and trying to make it on your own. If I ever got homesick, I could always come downstairs and visit her.I thanked her and closed the door. Then I stood there for a long time, staring at the stew. In all my 19 years, no one had ever told me I was welcome to stop by whenever I felt homesick. The day Ashford Group posted its official apology, my phone rang nonstop. The calls came from numbers I didn't recognize. Some wer

"We put up missing-person notices all over the country! We spent millions trying to find you! Can't you at least try to understand our side of things?"I laughed. "You spent millions looking for me, but somehow you never found the village where I grew up. You ran my picture in newspapers and on TV, then sat in your mansion in Westhaven waiting for me to come home on my own."Graham went pale."You were looking for the son you'd lost, not the person I actually was. And when I finally showed up, poor and looking like I'd been through hell, you couldn't accept me."You'd rather believe I was a bully than face the fact that I'd grown up poor and spent my whole life just trying to survive."For a long moment, no one spoke. Graham and Evelyn stood outside my door, still clutching the expensive gifts they'd brought. Finally, Evelyn broke the silence. "Asher, I'm so sorry. We were wrong about the apology letter... We should've known better. But I swear, I had no idea Josh was lying. If I

I continued, "You took his side. You called me a horrible person and told me to get lost."Evelyn was shaking, tears streaming down her face. She tried to say something, but couldn't get the words out."You're my mother," I continued, "but you've never once trusted me."She finally broke down in tears.A few steps away, Graham stood with his back to us, his shoulders trembling. He didn't turn around. The police questioned Josh for four hours. He sat with his head down, answering their questions one by one.He told them how he'd learned that the Ashfords had found their biological son, how he'd hired someone to track down my adoptive parents, and how he'd approached Fiona Mercer with an offer of 200,000 dollars for samples of my handwriting."I was scared... I thought Mom and Dad wouldn't want me anymore once he came back. I just wanted him to back off. I wanted him to know he couldn't just show up and become part of this family… I wasn't trying to hurt him. I just... I didn't wa

"He paid someone for samples of your handwriting. The woman who sold them to him is named Fiona Garcia."Fiona Garcia. My adoptive mother."According to Josh, he contacted Fiona a month ago and offered her 200,000 dollars for samples of your handwriting. He then used them to forge the apology letter." The officer's voice was calm and matter-of-fact.The hallway fell silent. I could hear my own heartbeat, each thud like a dull blow to my chest.I'd dropped out of school at 14. I'd spent an entire year hauling steel rebar at construction sites and earned just 30,000 dollars.Later, I'd washed dishes at a restaurant, working from six in the morning until ten at night for 1,800 dollars a month.Fiona had taken every penny I'd earned, spending it on new schoolbags and phones for my younger brothers, as well as fees to get them into better schools. When I came to the city, I couldn't even afford a train ticket. A police officer had covered the fare for me.And Fiona had made 200,000

As soon as the officer finished speaking, Josh went pale.Evelyn was still staring blankly at my ID, as though she hadn't quite understood what she'd just heard."No record of him ever attending high school..." Graham repeated, his voice strained. He turned to Josh and swallowed hard, but couldn't bring himself to say anything. After a moment of stunned silence, the reporters erupted with questions."Wait, he's never been to high school?""Then what about Josh's bullying accusations? Who wrote that apology letter?""Josh, can you explain this?"Microphones were shoved toward Josh from every direction, and the cameras zoomed in on his pale face. His lips trembled as he struggled to find an answer. After a long pause, he suddenly burst into tears. "I... I don't know! Maybe he changed his name afterward, or someone else enrolled in school using his identity... I don't know!"He looked up at Graham, his eyes pleading. "Dad, I swear I'm telling the truth! The boy who bullied me bac
