Chapter 102

Author: Summer Knowles
One test set missing?

Sarah stared intently at the damaged safe. When she left last night, it had been securely locked, and the only key was with her.

“What do we do now, Ms. Sanders?” The student beside her was on the verge of tears.

The principal’s speech was nearly over, and it would soon be time for the judges to speak. Sarah made a quick decision. “Here’s what we’ll do—discard all these test questions.”

“Discard them?! But the test sets have already been handed to the judges. Where are we going to find a new set of questions now?”

Sarah pulled out a USB drive. “This drive contains a completely new set of questions. Originally, I set it aside because the difficulty level was a bit high. Now, take this and find two trusted people to help you. Make 500 copies as quickly as possible and bring them back.”

The participants were already seated, and their phones had been collected. Once the new tests were printed, they could be distributed immediately without risk of further leaks.

Jane, Professor Wells, and the other judges were surprised when they received the new test questions—it was clear they were different from the set they’d been given earlier that morning. The participants were given only ten minutes to complete the test. To everyone’s shock, only forty contestants advanced to the next round.Mia was among the finalists, but Lucy was eliminated.Furious, Lucy yanked the crumpled test paper from her bag. Lindsey tried to console her, saying, “It’s okay, Lucy. It’s just a competition.”“Get lost! Stay away from me!” Lucy exploded, tearing the paper into shreds and throwing it to the ground.Annoyed, Lindsey walked away, muttering under her breath, “What’s her problem? She failed to cheat and now she’s blaming me.”The second round proceeded smoothly. Each time a video clip was played, the groups would start writing furiously on their sheets. The entire auditorium was filled with nothing but the quiet scratching of pens on paper. When the second roun

Just as Mia stepped onto the stage, Lucy suddenly stormed up and pointed at Sarah, shouting loudly, “I want to report something! Sarah helped Mia cheat! This is unfair!” Her words echoed through the auditorium, and the room fell silent. Zachary’s cold gaze swept over Lucy, while Sarah responded in a steady, icy tone. “Lucy, you can’t make accusations without proof.” “I have proof!” Lucy screamed, her voice frantic. Dean Larson exchanged a glance with Professor Wells, while Jane looked on with a cold, unreadable expression. Lucy continued, her voice filled with righteous indignation. “The original test questions were supposed to be a different set! But just thirty minutes before the competition, Sarah swapped them out. Isn’t that suspicious? And look at this!” She held up Mia’s bag and pulled out a crumpled sheet of paper. “I found the original test questions in Mia’s bag!” Dean Larson turned to Sarah, his tone heavy. “Ms. Sanders, what’s going on here?” He was awar

Sarah’s gaze grew sharper as she locked eyes with Lucy. Her voice was steady but commanding. “Who told you?”Lucy avoided her stare, her eyes darting nervously. Still, she clung to her argument. “That doesn’t matter! The fact is, this test paper is from the competition! Don’t deny it. If you won’t admit it, we can have the events committee investigate to see who’s lying! You’re just helping Mia cheat because you’re close to her!”The crowd grew restless, their anger reignited. If Lucy’s claims were true, then Sarah had crossed a line, betraying the trust of the entire competition. The psychology department’s reputation had been built on the long-standing tradition of these annual competitions. And now, someone was accusing a faculty member of cheating in one of its most important events. But Sarah remained calm. She smiled faintly and raised a hand to quiet the room. “Everyone, please listen. Lucy is correct. This is indeed the first set of test questions—the ones prepared for toda

Sarah’s face was cold and composed as she gestured toward the screen. The projector lit up, displaying grainy, green-tinged footage from the office’s night-vision camera. Despite the low light, the scene was clear. After about ten seconds, the office door creaked open. Two figures snuck inside, moving cautiously. One of them was unmistakably Lucy.“Turn it off! Turn it off!” Lucy screamed, her panic evident. A moment ago, she had been full of bravado, but seeing the footage made her realize the truth—this had been a trap. Sarah had set her up from the start. The video paused, freezing on Lucy’s face in perfect clarity.“Lucy Chancer,” Dean Larson said, his face alternating between pale and flushed with anger, “so you’re the one who stole the test questions. And now, at the competition, you dare accuse others to cover your own actions?”The dean’s fury was palpable. In front of so many reporters, this wasn’t just embarrassing—it was a direct blow to the university’s reputation.St

“No! You can’t!” Lucy screamed as if possessed, suddenly scrambling to her feet. Her voice was shrill, almost desperate. “Dean! You absolutely cannot call the police! If you do, my life will be ruined! You can’t! I’m from the Chancer family! My brother is on the board of trustees—you can’t just ignore that!”Tears brimmed in her eyes, overflowing as she shook her head wildly. She couldn’t let this happen. She was the daughter of the Chancer family, a shining socialite of the East Coast. If she were arrested and sent to jail, not only would the other wealthy families shun her, but she’d become a target of mockery for everyone in her circle.Dean Larson hesitated, visibly torn. After all, the Chancer family held sway over the board. But Zachary’s icy voice cut through the tension. “Don’t worry, Dean Larson. The board isn’t blind to right and wrong. Besides, this matter involves Mia, and the Reynolds family will not let this go. Let’s follow Ms. Sanders’s suggestion.”“Mr. Reynolds!

The Infirmary.Sarah’s legs were badly burned, red and swollen, with blisters forming. Her arms bore smaller burn marks as well.Mia had wanted to come along, but Zachary sent her home, insisting she rest.As the doctor treated Sarah’s burns, she drew in a sharp breath. The pain was excruciating—not just searing heat, but a crawling, prickling sensation, as if countless tiny insects were biting into her skin. It burned and itched all at once, the kind of itch she desperately wanted to scratch but couldn’t without unbearable pain.“Don’t touch it,” Zachary said firmly, catching her wrist to stop her from moving. The doctor handed Zachary an ice pack. “Place this directly on the burn. Keep it against the skin for at least ten minutes.”Zachary took the ice pack but suddenly paused, glancing at the doctor. “Wait—can she still use ice for that... area?”The doctor immediately understood. “It’s fine. She likely won’t feel it there.”Sarah’s face turned crimson. Using her uninjured h

The Infirmary.“Keep the ice on a little longer.”Just as the ice packs were being removed, the door to the infirmary burst open.James walked in with his mother, followed by Charlotte and the Garnett family.“You wretched woman! Give me back my daughter!” Mrs. Chancer yelled, pointing an accusatory finger at Sarah. “The police took my daughter away, and you’re going to march down to that station right now and have her released!”James, slightly more composed, glanced at Sarah’s burns with a flicker of surprise. But when he saw Zachary standing nearby, his expression immediately soured.“Sarah, I apologize on behalf of my sister,” James began, trying to sound reasonable. “But don’t you think you went too far? Calling the police was unnecessary. You were just acting on impulse, weren’t you? Let’s put this behind us. If you can have her released, I’ll make sure you’re compensated for everything.”“James,” Sarah’s voice was sharp, “you think I went too far? Have you looked at what

“You’re lying! How could the dean act without the board’s approval? Don’t forget, we’re members of the board!” Mrs. Chancer scolded, her tone sharp.Sarah didn’t even glance at her, replying flatly, “Have you forgotten? There’s another board member here.”The mention of Zachary immediately silenced Mrs. Chancer. She didn’t dare speak further.Charlotte stepped forward again, her tone soft and persuasive. “Ms. Sanders, this situation can be resolved easily. There’s no need to escalate it this far. The Chancer family won’t give up on Lucy. Why not take the high road and forgive them?”“Shut up!” Sarah snapped, her voice low but cutting. “What does this have to do with you? You’re not even part of the Chancer family, so stop telling me what to do. And by the way, you took my phone, didn’t you?”Charlotte’s heart skipped a beat. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”“Stop playing dumb. I knew it was you the moment it went missing. I suggest you return my phone quickly—or throw it

At the front desk, Sarah watched seven or eight people standing in line, all holding identical discount vouchers. This was likely a company team-building activity. She listened to their chatty discussions, which included some crude language as they made no effort to hide their rough backgrounds."This place is so luxurious! The company really splurged to send us somewhere this fancy. I've never stayed in such a nice hotel in my life.""Me neither, but let's not forget why we're actually here and pretend we're just on vacation!""Oh, come on, who's going to forget?"Sarah's ears perked up. These people's conversation seemed suspicious, almost as if they wanted others to notice them. After about fifteen minutes, when everyone ahead had finally checked in, Sarah presented her VIP custom invitation and completed her member registration. She lay on the spacious bed in a room with floor-to-ceiling windows that offered views of the beach and ocean. It was noon, and sunlight spilled onto

"Mr. Sanders, I believe I was very clear in my email. With the current uncertain situation, cooperating with me is the most rational choice," Zachary said seriously.Melvin burst out laughing. "I might have believed you if you'd said this a few years ago, but times have changed. Zachary, do you remember what you promised me before? Have you kept any of those promises? Neither three years ago nor now have you delivered."When Melvin mentioned three years ago, Zachary's eyes filled with gravity and shame. No one understood better than they did what had happened—that horrific scene was too painful to even think about. He moved his lips. "People can't always live in the past."Even he couldn't believe his own words.Melvin said with self-mockery, "Listen to yourself. How absurd that sounds. People indeed can't live in the past forever, but Sarah has been trapped in that darkness for three years. Do you dare to face it? To uncover it?"After being wounded, a bleeding injury slowly form

Vivian exhaled deeply and said anxiously, "Grandfather, what happened last time upset Zachary, and he won't see me now. But I'll handle it properly."Old Mr. Wilson gave Vivian a meaningful look. "Good. I certainly trust your abilities."After seeing Old Mr. Wilson into his car, Vivian returned to her office and made a mysterious phone call, giving some instructions. After hanging up, her face broke into a satisfied smile, as if she was already enjoying the sweet taste of victory. At the Sanders Group."Smack." Sarah hit Melvin hard on the head.Melvin winced in pain. "Are you doing this on purpose? Taking personal revenge? I haven't even bothered you lately."Sarah shrugged, looking innocent. "Didn't you say your right eyelid keeps twitching? The left means money coming, the right means trouble. I'm just using an old folk remedy to ward off the bad luck."Melvin couldn't help rolling his eyes. "I don't know if the bad luck is gone, but I almost got a concussion from your 'remed

"Don't any of you have something to say?" Old Mr. Wilson sat in the chairman's exclusive seat, leaning back with an expressionless face as he surveyed the room. Some shareholders had come just out of respect for Old Mr. Wilson. They exchanged glances for a moment before Mr. Jefferson finally broke the silence, "What if we lower our prices or add more package deals?"As soon as he finished speaking, several members of the company's management team eagerly agreed. "Mr. Jefferson makes a good point."Old Mr. Wilson twirled the dragon-headed cane in his right hand, his expression revealing neither approval nor disapproval.Vivian, who had remained silent since the start of the meeting, finally spoke up, "I don't think that's appropriate."She looked at everyone present, her tone serious, "First, the Sanders Group's revenue has already exceeded the projected line by over a billion. If we lower our prices, even if we attract more customers, the overall result will be the same."By this

Vivian never expected that despite her orders to keep the detained shipment a secret, the board of directors would somehow catch wind of it.As soon as the meeting began, the middle-aged man sitting in the first seat on the right frowned and questioned her, "Ms. Wilson, are you hiding something from us?"Mr. Jefferson had the largest shareholding in the Wilson Group after Vivian and her grandfather. Compared to others, his words carried more authority.Naturally, Vivian had to show him some respect, given that she was the younger generation."Mr. Jefferson, by seniority, I should call you Uncle. You've watched me grow up. Do you think I would hide anything from you?" Vivian decided to play dumb first. She was certain these people had only heard rumors and hadn't yet gathered evidence. This was indeed the case. Mr. Jefferson narrowed his eyes, his expression unchanged, speaking in a tone that was half-joking, half-threatening, "Ms. Wilson, please don't say that. When it comes to bus

Charlotte ignored her, still peering behind the caretaker. The caretaker patted her chest and smiled as she approached. "Are you looking for Mr. Chancer? He went back to work. He asked me to take care of you. I thought you might wake up soon, so I went out to buy some nutritious soup for you.""You're saying he left? He left before I even woke up?" Charlotte struggled to open her dry lips, her voice raspier than ever before.Hearing this, the caretaker quickly set down the thermos and handed her the cup of tea from the table. "Please drink some water to soothe your throat, but don't drink too much. You've just given birth, so try to stay in bed and rest as much as possible."Charlotte found the water being offered to her ironically bitter. She had endured excruciating pain to give birth to James's child, yet he couldn't even spare a simple "thank you" for her efforts. "Answer me. Do you most hope it's heads or tails?" Sarah's voice carried an undeniable authority. The woman finally spoke. "Tails."Before Sarah's hand moved, the woman hurriedly corrected herself, "No, no, no—heads."Her indecisiveness reminded Sarah of her former self. Choosing between reason and emotion was often the hardest decision. It had once taken her several days to make up her mind.Sarah opened her palm. The woman's eyes widened, staring as if trying to burn a hole through Sarah's hand. But quickly, she discovered that Sarah's palm was completely empty. There was no coin at all.No heads or tails—there wasn't even a coin to begin with.Seeing the woman's confused expression, Sarah smiled and said, "In the moment I opened my hand, your heart already had the answer. I can't tell you how to solve your problem, nor can I make the decision for you. But you should know that you only have one life, while love can be found more than once. This single subtle gesture revealed her inner feelings. Without needing to look further, Sarah immediately understood. Through the monitor, she could see that the photograph was a selfie of a man.Beyond heartbreak, she couldn't think of any other explanation. The emotion release room had been open for nearly a week. During this time, she had observed many clients. Those who came to release their emotions fell into several categories: heartbreak, work conflicts, friendship issues, personal disputes, or being stuck at a crossroads in life, unable to make the right choice. They came here to vent their emotions, and often only after destroying everything could they finally see what they truly wanted in their hearts. This was Sarah's original purpose in creating the emotion release room. But more importantly, this wasn't just a simple place to vent emotions—it offered clients more valuable services, such as guidance from top psychological counselors to help them quickly resolve their tr

"Enough. I've heard too many words like these. It's all for my own good, it's all to protect me—using these noble-sounding excuses to make me believe him, to understand him. Well then, why don't you who want me to believe him try to convince him to believe in me? Are you all underestimating me, or overestimating Vivian? I don't want to hear this kind of talk anymore. Everything he suffered today was his own choice."In this moment, Sarah's coldness fully erupted. She was no longer indifferent or dismissive, because she simply couldn't ignore the pain in her heart.Mia hadn't expected Sarah to say such things today. She held Sarah's hand sympathetically. "Sarah, I'm sorry. It's because I wasn't thinking. I shouldn't have said those things that upset you."When emotions reach their breaking point, they tend to explode, but often calm down shortly after the outburst.Sarah had regained her composure. She shook her head with a bitter smile. "This isn't your fault. Since the doctor is he
