Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Belen
With no family member beside me, I had to sign the informed-consent form acknowledging the risks myself, my hand shaking the entire time.

"Ms. Moretti, the puncture will be extremely painful. Local anesthetic may not block the deep pressure as the needle passes between the vertebrae, and changes in spinal-fluid pressure can hurt. If it becomes unbearable, cry out." The doctor sighed as he picked up a steel needle nearly four inches long.

To avoid putting pressure on the gunshot wound in my chest, I had to hold an extremely awkward, physically draining position the entire time.

When the long needle pierced my skin and muscle and slid between my vertebrae into the spinal canal, pain detonated through my body.

"Ngh..."

I bit down on my lip so hard it bled.

In the bed next to mine, a young woman was undergoing a similar procedure. Her husband held her tightly, kissing away her tears, murmuring softly, "Baby, I'm here. It doesn't hurt, it doesn't hurt..."

And me?

I was a terminal cancer patient counting down my last days, with no one left to love her.

By the time I finally endured the agonizing procedure and the nurses wheeled me back to my room, the sky outside had gone completely dark.

I lay alone in the empty hospital room. Eric never came back.

No phone call. No text. He hadn't even sent one of his men to check on me.

Remembering his earnest promise to "come back early for dinner," I felt like an absolute fool.

At two in the morning, waves of crushing headaches surged one after another, relentless as the tide. The tumor in my brain was pressing against my nerves with a vengeance.

The pain made sleep impossible. All I could do was pick up my phone with trembling hands and open the encrypted photo album.

Inside were ten years of memories with Eric.

Eight years ago, we'd hidden from enemies in an abandoned warehouse in Queens. It was freezing. Our bodies were numb with cold, and all we could do was hold each other under a single moldy blanket, surviving on a can of expired, ice-cold beans. Eric's teeth chattered so hard he could barely speak, but he still held me tight, shielding me with his body. "Selena," he'd said, "when I become Don, I'll feed you the finest foie gras every damn day and dress you in the prettiest dresses."

Five years ago, I took a bullet to my left shoulder that nearly cost me my arm. On the grimy leather couch of a back-alley clinic, Eric wept like a little boy who'd lost his favorite toy. He knelt in front of me, kissing my blood-soaked bandages over and over, sobbing and begging me not to leave him. He said I was a part of him and that without me, he couldn't survive a single day.

So why, now that he finally had power and status, had he become so cold?

While I was lost in the pain of those memories, my phone screen suddenly lit up.

An unknown number had sent me a video.

I opened it.

The footage showed an opulent revolving restaurant high above the city. Eric and Angelina sat together beside the windows.

Angelina wore a red couture gown, looking every bit the haughty queen, ordering Eric to cut the steak on her plate.

Eric showed no displeasure. Instead, his expression was tender, almost submissively eager to please, as he fed the neatly sliced steak to her lips. Angelina giggled and playfully pinched his chin. Then she splashed the rest of her wine across his expensive suit.

In the video, Eric didn't get angry. He wrapped his arm around Angelina's waist with an indulgent smile and pressed a hard kiss to her lips.

Then came a message, dripping with arrogance:

[See that, Selena? The man you nearly died protecting is nothing but an obedient dog in front of me. I heard you took another bullet for him? What a pathetic, worthless gutter rat. If you know what's good for you, get out of the Moretti house. Next Wednesday is my wedding to Eric. I don't want any disgusting trash ruining my appetite.]

I stared at the message. I watched Eric in the video, leaning in to kiss Angelina. My stomach churned violently.

I didn't cry. I didn't even feel angry.

When a person has given up all hope in someone, they can't cry.

I didn't sleep that night.

  • After Hearing My Mafia Boyfriend’s Thoughts, I Chose To Die Alone   Chapter 11

After stabbing Angelina to death, Eric became one of the most wanted men in the country, hunted by both the authorities and the underworld. He lost his position as Don. He lost the Family. He lost his reputation. He became a rat, skulking through the shadows, hiding in every dark corner. He thought about killing himself countless times, about ending the unrelenting agony with a single bullet. But every time he pressed the barrel against his temple, my final note would surface in his mind.[I don't have time to wait for you anymore.]He couldn't accept it. He hadn't seen my grave. He hadn't heard the final truth about what happened to me. Before he died, he needed an answer. Now he had nothing left to lose.He changed his identity and slashed his once-handsome face until jagged scars made him unrecognizable. He bleached his hair white and disguised himself as a wandering mercenary. After months of relentless searching, he finally found Victor again in a war-torn region of the Middle Eas

Eric eventually traced the return address on the parcel all the way back to Finland. When he finally tracked down Victor's clinic and stood before the snow-covered log cabin, there was nothing left of the powerful, untouchable Don he'd been in New York.He was gaunt, barely more than a skeleton. He wore a dirty, wrinkled black overcoat. The slicked-back hair he'd once groomed so meticulously was now a tangled mess. Stubble covered his jaw in uneven patches. His eyes were sunken, the whites shot through with red. He looked less like a man and more like a corpse that had wandered through a blizzard."Dr. Hale... please, tell me. Where is Selena?"The moment he saw Victor, Eric abandoned every shred of dignity. He dropped to his knees in the snow, clutching Victor's pant leg as he sobbed and begged."I'm a sinner. I'm a bastard! I know I was wrong. I know... Just let me see her once. Even if she wants my life, I won't resist! Please, tell me where she is..."Eric wept uncontrollably, the

When the first blizzard hit New York, Eric completely lost his mind.He hired the best private investigators money could buy and made deals with rival gangs, trading favors with the Moretti Family's enemies, all to find me.When the investigators handed him an empty report confirming that I'd never gone to Hawaii and that there was no record of me leaving the country under my real name, Eric felt the ground drop out from beneath him.Meanwhile, his marriage to Angelina had devolved into open warfare."Eric! You worthless piece of garbage! You skipped my father's birthday!" Angelina slapped Eric hard across his handsome face, leaving an angry red handprint. She jabbed her finger in his face, every word a blade. "Are you still pining over that Selena? That lowlife gutter rat? Let me tell you something. Don't think I don't know about your pathetic little history together! She was nothing but a dog licking the dirt off the Astalotta Family's boots! I'm not some pushover like her that you c

Winter in Finland was long and pure.I sat on the deck of a log cabin in Lapland, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket. Pine logs crackled in the fireplace, but my body was still cold as ice.I coughed twice, the second fit trailing into a ragged wheeze...A violent coughing fit struck without warning. I doubled over in agony, pressing a white handkerchief to my mouth. When the spasm finally passed and I pulled the cloth away, it was soaked in a bright, warm stain of blood. The brain tumor was deteriorating faster than the doctors had predicted. Over the past few days, my waking hours had grown shorter and shorter. Most of the time I drifted in a semi-conscious haze. My vision was blurring. I didn't even have the strength to lift a cup of water."Selena, drink this."A warm, slender hand held out a mug of hot tea.The young, handsome man beside me was Dr. Victor Hale. His deep blue eyes were as calm as a mountain lake, and his gaze held endless compassion. He was a physician with Doctors Wi

Eric and Angelina's wedding day arrived.Eric stood before the priest in a perfectly tailored black suit. His handsome face wore a flawless smile, but beneath his cuffs, his hands were trembling. His palms were slick with sweat, and his eyes kept drifting toward the sealed cathedral doors.[Where the hell is Selena? Did she get on the plane? Why hasn't the guy I sent to the airport reported back?][She always listens to me. She must have gone to Hawaii like I told her. Once today's ceremony is over and I have the Astalotta Family's weapons authorization, I'll fly straight to Hawaii and smooth things over. She loves me so much. She'll forgive me. She'll understand I had no choice.]Angelina glided to his side in a wedding gown encrusted with South African diamonds, preening like a peacock. Under the priest's solemn gaze, Eric smiled and said "I do" with perfect devotion, sliding a priceless pigeon-blood ruby ring onto her finger. The wedding went off without a hitch. Eric finally got hi

  • After Hearing My Mafia Boyfriend’s Thoughts, I Chose To Die Alone   Chapter 6

The day before the wedding, I packed my bags alone in the bedroom. In truth, I had almost nothing to take. A dying woman doesn't need much luggage. From the very bottom of the closet, I pulled out a tin box.It was full of "memories" from my ten years with Eric.I picked up a slightly misshapen brass bullet. Eight years ago, in Chicago, it was the first bullet I'd ever taken for him. He'd held my nearly lifeless body, sobbing until he could barely breathe. After the surgery, when they removed the bullet, he'd sealed it in resin and given it to me. He said it was proof of our "undying love."I looked at the bullet, expressionless, and tossed it into the trash can.Next, I pulled out a faded bulletproof vest riddled with patches and bullet holes.Ten years ago, Eric had spent his last three hundred dollars on a black-market bulletproof vest for me. Back then, we had no home and couldn't even afford a proper meal. But on the inside collar, in crooked black marker, he'd written:[Selena, I
