Chapter 278

Author: Aurora Wells
I let out a sigh, defeated and resigned.

At last, my hair was dry and the night had grown late, yet Miles still hadn’t returned to the guest room.

I changed into my pajamas, hugged my comforter, and looked at him.

He looked calm. “I’m sleeping here tonight.”

I was speechless.

After a long silence, I mumbled, “I’m not a kid anymore. You’re not going to try anything in the middle of the night, are you?”

“No,” he replied simply.

Then he grabbed a pillow and set it down—at the foot of the bed, as if to prove his point.

I exhaled. “How childish.”

Miles suddenly gave me a smile. “Until you’re truly free, I won’t touch you.”

I muttered, “Feels like there’s no point in holding back, is there?”

Miles sat up, eyes narrowing slightly as he looked at me. “And what exactly do you mean by that?…”

I caught sight of his half-unbuttoned collar and quickly lay down, shutting my eyes.

“Nothing. I didn’t mean anything. I’m just tired. I’m going to sleep.”

I turned off the light.

A moment later, I felt M

I quickly pulled away from him, dropped onto the vanity stool, and began towel-drying my hair, tugging my robe tightly around me in the process. Miles sat down in the chair beside me, silently watching. I avoided his gaze, but inside, my thoughts were a tangled mess. Without a word, he took the towel from my hands and began drying my hair himself. I blinked. He was gentle. First, he patted the ends to absorb the water, then carefully worked his way up with slow, deliberate strokes. Finally, he reached for the hairdryer. “No, I’ve got it.” I snatched it from him before he could switch it on, half afraid I’d completely lose it if he so much as tried. Miles’ gaze darkened. “Eve, you’re still upset.” I kept my eyes on the floor. “I’m not. I’m really not.” He took the dryer from my hands and suddenly leaned in, closing the distance between us until my back pressed up against the vanity. His eyes were stormy, unreadable. I let out a tired breath. “What do you want t

The Wynns had always been a model of discipline—an old-money family known for its spotless reputation, untouched by scandal. So, it was almost unthinkable that someone like her had managed to sink her claws into the next generation. No wonder the hostess hadn’t wanted to face the guests tonight.…Upstairs on the second floor of the Wynn estate, Marsha stood with her jaw tight, locked in a transatlantic phone call. The call was from Ronald himself. The moment the incident had happened, the ever-efficient house steward had already reported it across the globe. His voice came through the line, cold and clipped.“What are you going to do about this?”Marsha spoke slowly, without panic. “Ronald, your son’s the one acting out of line. Why are you calling me instead of chewing him out?”Ronald’s tone stayed icy. “You have five minutes. Start explaining.”She remained composed. “There’s nothing to explain. That woman is not coming into this family—divorced or not. "And let’s be clear, she ha

The rest of the conversation faded into a muffled haze, like my ears had suddenly been wrapped in gauze. Everything around me sounded distant, unclear. My vision blurred. My head buzzed. Shame—raw, overwhelming—hit me like never before. It was that same feeling I’d had at five years old, when my mother took me to a neighbor’s house. I’d been losing baby teeth, couldn’t help sneaking a bite of cake, and the neighbor’s son caught me in the act. "Oh, so this is the kind of girl you are—cheap and shameless.""Oh, you’re a thief, trying to take something that was never yours."The mocking voices in my head grew louder, laughing cruelly. I vaguely heard Miles say something, then felt him pull me away from the Wynn estate. By the time I sat in the car, the fog in my mind had started to lift. Miles was staring at me, silent and intense. I wiped at my eyes. “I’m fine.” He let out a long breath and pulled me into his arms. “I’m sorry.” I managed a weak smile. “Hearing an ap

The girl pouted when Miles didn’t hug her back. “Mice, aren’t you happy to see me?” Miles replied calmly, “I am. I just don’t understand why you didn’t tell me you were coming.” She beamed. “Because I wanted to surprise you!” Her smile bloomed like spring. “Aren’t you surprised?” I couldn’t tell what Miles was feeling, only that he clearly didn’t want to keep the conversation going. He replied flatly, “Very surprised.” She finally seemed to pick up on his tone and frowned. “You don’t seem very happy.” Still composed, Miles answered, “Not at all. I’m fine. But you’re underdressed—why don’t you go put on something warmer?” Only then did the girl seem to realize how little she was wearing. She laughed. “It’s fine, I’m used to it… ah-choo—” She sneezed again an again. Without a word, Miles pulled me a few steps farther away. She looked up and, for the first time, noticed me. Curious, she tilted her head and studied me. “Mice, who’s this lady?” She stepped closer

My body felt caught between fire and ice, as if I were burning in a furnace one moment and plunged into an ice bath the next. While the maid went to fetch “Miss Lee,” Marsha turned back to the circle of society women and resumed their pleasant chatter. I heard Miles say, “Eve, let’s sit over there.” I nodded blankly, my legs numb as I followed him to a corner of the room. It wasn’t until I sat down that I realized I had forgotten to breathe. Letting out a long exhale, a rush of sorrow welled up inside me—sharp and endless. I’d made a mistake. I never should’ve come to this party. Head bowed, I felt tears slipping onto the silk of my dress. The smooth fabric absorbed them instantly, leaving no trace. Miles stood beside me, quietly handing me a tissue. I glanced up at him, then quickly lowered my head again. Just then, someone called out from the staircase. A flash of white swept across my vision. A slender, graceful figure darted forward, fluttering like a whit

Seated beside her were a few elegantly dressed society ladies, all chatting enthusiastically.Marsha, a true Southern belle, carried herself with timeless grace. Around her neck was a strand of rich emeralds, and a matching bracelet encircled her delicate wrist—both pieces gleaming with quiet luxury and unmistakable pedigree.I instinctively glanced at the necklace I was wearing. So, this was what it meant to radiate wealth and status. That set alone must’ve been worth millions. No matter her looks or attire, the sheer weight of that jewelry could outshine every socialite in the city.Miles led me forward. The room quieted almost instantly, and dozens of eyes turned in our direction. My nerves, oddly, faded. Or maybe I was so tense I’d gone numb.Marsha gave me the briefest glance before deliberately shifting her gaze away, as if I wasn’t worth a second look. She stood with an elegant smile and walked over to Miles, her movements poised and fluid.“Miles, you’re here,” she said warml

Miles noticed something was off with me and gently pressed my hand.He said, "Don't be afraid."With that, he looped his arm through mine and calmly led me toward the grand hall glowing with even more lights.I took a deep breath and followed him in.I had no idea I was about to walk straight into the biggest storm since losing my memory...The world of high society ran deep. I was still too naive.…We hadn’t even reached the hall when I spotted a few well-dressed guests chatting and laughing in small groups along the corridor.Further in, the lights grew brighter. The crowd thickened—shadows mingled with soft chatter, perfume lingered in the air, the entrance flanked by elegant dessert displays and blooms everywhere. For a moment, it felt like I had stepped onto the set of an old television drama. One of those vintage ones.I glanced down at my outfit. Thankfully, I hadn’t messed up.If I had shown up in a modern cocktail dress, it would’ve been a disaster.First impressions mattere

I was speechless. Did she just flirt with Miles? He frowned slightly and waved his hand. The two assistants waiting outside immediately entered and blocked Ruby.Ignoring her protests, Miles told them calmly, “Make sure she deletes the photos.”With that, he took my hand and led me out of the fitting room.Sarah hurried after us, apologizing repeatedly. “I’m so sorry, Mr. Wynn. I didn’t expect her to be so... uncivilized.”She motioned to her assistant, who quickly brought out a brand-new pair of shoes.“Miss White, I truly apologize for earlier. These shoes were meant to go with the dress—you didn’t get a chance to try them on just now.”I glanced at them and couldn’t help but smile.Seeing my face light up, Miles chuckled. “Silly girl, just a pair of shoes and you’re already won over?”Only then did I notice his mood had lifted.Thank goodness Sarah knew how to handle things. If she hadn’t, and Miles had walked out in a rage, Elmwood would’ve had a rough few months ahead.Thinking
