Chapter 3

작가: Not Drunk
The living room fell silent.

I stared blankly at Otto, lost in thought.

Dad noticed that the recording had finished playing, but I still hadn’t called him back.

His voice sounded again.

[Rose? Are you still angry with me?]

The house was silent, without even an echo.

Dad grew frantic as he tried to operate Otto and activate its camera.

[Otto, locate Rose.]

Otto was about to head toward the bedroom when I hurried in front of it.

But I was already dead.

If Dad discovered the truth now, Mom would never come back!

Otto passed straight through me, its mechanical voice repeating over and over.

[Locating kitten! Locating kitten!]

I used every ounce of strength I had and tried to press the call-back button on Otto’s body.

“Come on! Don’t let Otto go into the bedroom!”

Perhaps my desperate wish reached heaven, because I suddenly found that I could touch Otto.

There was no time to celebrate. I immediately pressed the call-back button.

The next moment, Otto fell silent.

[Kitten located. Search canceled.]

On the other end, Dad breathed a sigh of relief.

[Rose, you scared me half to death.]

He let out a long sigh and ended the call with Otto.

I floated over to the window and gazed at the sky outside.

One by one, the stars began to shine, glittering like Mom’s eyes.

Mom once told me that when people died, they became stars and watched over the people they loved.

Would I become a star, too?

Would Mom and Dad recognize me and wave hello?

I lowered my gaze to my transparent hands and smiled.

As long as Mom could come back, Dad wouldn’t have to lock himself in the lab every day and stare at Mom’s photograph until dawn.

He would smile just like he did in the photograph and take Mom and me to a dessert shop for strawberry cake.

He would watch The Powerpuff Girls with me over and over again.

He would also…

I froze.

I was already dead.

There was no “me” anymore.

I smiled faintly. It was okay.

As long as Mom and Dad were happy, that was all that mattered.

I didn’t know how long I had been floating around the house when Otto served me two more meals.

I sniffed the cat food, but I couldn’t smell anything.

Finally, I heard footsteps drawing closer in the hallway.

My heart gave a hard thump.

Dad must have brought Mom home!

I quickly floated toward the front door and stared at the security door.

“Mom, are you back?”

But as the footsteps drew closer, disappointment instantly washed over me.

It was Sophie.

“Daniel Dawson treats me like I’m a thief. He changes the door code every single day. What a joke!”

“All this pointless research every day. Does he really think he can bring a dead woman back to life?”

That wasn’t true!

Mom wasn’t dead!

She would be back very soon!

Sophie was evil!

Whenever she appeared, Mom and Dad would argue.

She always wore short skirts and heavy perfume.

When she saw me, she smiled and said, “You must be Rose. You’re just as cute as I heard.”

But in private, Sophie would secretly pinch me. Whenever I cried, she would listen and accuse me of hating her.

That was the first time Dad ever scolded me.

“Why do you take after your mother so much? Always so jealous. I’ve told you, Sophie and I are just friends!”

“If you can’t raise our child properly, then you don’t get to take care of her anymore!”

Dad took me to the lab, and I didn’t see Mom for an entire month.

When I saw Mom again, I suddenly realized that the light had gone out of her eyes.

After Sophie finished checking Otto’s operating data, she threw all the cat food I hadn’t eaten into a trash bag.

Then she sat on the sofa, scribbled over Mom’s face in the framed photograph, and wiped the glass clean.

“A useless woman gave birth to a useless child. Once the little brat is out of the way, this whole house will be mine.”

She hummed to herself until the expression on her face changed when she saw the incoming call on her phone.

“Sophie, is Rose all right?”

It was Dad’s voice!

Sophie’s voice instantly turned gentle.

“Rose is doing just fine. I just made her scrambled eggs, and she even said they tasted just like her mother’s.”

I covered Mom’s ears, not wanting her to hear those words. As far as I was concerned, I would have done anything to bring Mom back.Mom watched Sophie being taken away as the house fell silent once again. She returned to the bedroom and took my hand again.“She was right, Rose.”Before she could finish, tears as large as raindrops fell onto the back of my hand.“I knew exactly what kind of person she was, yet I still left.“I chose to live for myself again, but in doing so, I abandoned you.”I shook my head desperately. No!Mom, that wasn’t true! You only wanted to live for yourself again. Before you were a mother, you were a person in your own right. But it was useless. My voice couldn’t reach her ears.My arms passed straight through her shoulders.I held Mom, but she couldn’t feel a thing.Dad walked in from the living room and knelt in the bedroom doorway. He stayed there for a long time, until darkness fell again, until the officers came to take away my little body.Mom bent down

I watched Dad walk around Sophie, ignoring her desperate explanations. Then he dropped to his knees in front of my body.“Rose, I know I was wrong.”“Wake up, please. Wake up.”Mom gently took my hand and spoke softly.“Rose, look. The person who hurt you is here. I told you that people who do bad things will eventually face the consequences.”“Don’t worry. I will make sure she pays.”Sophie staggered back, panic spreading across her face.“Daniel, Mrs. Dawson, you must have misunderstood.“I don’t know how Rose ended up like this… I really don’t! I came to see her every day and cooked for her. Maybe Rose ate something she shouldn’t have…”I stuck my tongue out at Sophie in disgust.I would never eat random things!Mom had taught me better.“Are you saying Rose ate the cat food herself?”Mom looked up at her.“You must have deleted all of Otto’s data, right? The security footage, feeding records, and operating logs—you erased them all.”Something seemed to cross Mom’s mind, and she gav

Her voice was hoarse, yet carried a quiet firmness that allowed no argument.Dad pressed the answer button. On the other end, Sophie’s voice was syrupy and sweet.“Daniel, is Rose all right? I left in such a hurry yesterday that I forgot to tuck her in.“She didn’t catch a cold, did she? Should I come by and check on her?”Mom said nothing. She simply listened with an expressionless face.I floated behind her and watched her profile, suddenly overcome by unease.I had a sinking feeling that Mom was about to do something drastic. She picked up the phone and spoke in a frighteningly calm voice.“Hello? It’s me.”There was suddenly silence on the other end. After a long pause, Sophie finally spoke.“Mrs. Dawson? You’re really back?”Even I could hear the false sweetness in Sophie’s voice.Mom heard it even more clearly.“Mrs. Dawson, while you were gone, Daniel missed you terribly. He told me more than once that he had to bring you back, and he finally did it. I’m truly happy for him.”M

Mom’s voice was soft, as if she were afraid of waking me.But this time, I didn’t open my sleepy eyes and call her Mom in that soft, childish voice.“I’m home. Should I make you scrambled eggs? I’ll add just a little sugar—the way you like them.”I let out a happy squeal, and drool slipped from the corner of my mouth.Mom’s scrambled eggs were the best.Even Dad couldn’t make them taste the same. When Dad heard that, he fell silent for a long time before telling me, “No one makes it like your mom.”…“You’ve eaten so much candy you already have several cavities. I wasn’t here to keep an eye on you. Did you secretly eat more candy?”I shook my head and puffed out my chest.I hadn’t secretly eaten any candy!Besides, Dad hadn’t bought me any candy since Mom left.My confidence suddenly faded, and I slumped behind Mom.“I bought you a new hair clip. It’s pink, with a little flower on it. Open your eyes and see if you like it.“I’m not going anywhere ever again. I’ll never leave you again.

Mom stood frozen, as if someone had nailed her to the floor.Dad squeezed past her and flipped the light switch on the wall. The lights came on.The living room was empty, and a thin layer of dust covered the coffee table.Otto stood in the corner, its eyes flickering when it detected their arrival.[Administrator detected. She turned and walked toward my room.“Rose? Are you in there? I’m home. Open the door.”I followed behind Mom and shouted as loudly as I could.“Mom, I’m here!”But Mom could no longer hear me.Mom rushed into the room, searching everywhere, but couldn’t find me.Desperate, she searched the entire house. Sophie is lying!”I planted my hands on my hips and glared at her.Ever since Dad took me to the lab, I began to feel that something in our home had changed.Mom smiled less and less, while Dad came home later and later.Sophie, on the other hand, started coming over more often. She brought me toys and laughed as she pinched my cheeks.Mom watched it all with a cold expression, her eyes filled with something I couldn’t understand.Only later did I realize it was the despair of watching her family slowly fall apart—the despair that consumed her until the day she left this world. No one knew where she had gone.Dad went mad, searching everywhere and questioning everyone in an attempt to find a clue about where she went.Sophie came running over soon after.
