Chapter 3

Author: Quick Creating
Elio rushed in, eyes red. Two receptionists hurried after him, trying to stop him.

He planted himself in front of my desk, his voice shrill.

“Ansel! What gives you the right to turn me down?”

I put down my pen and looked up.

“You’re not qualified.”

His voice rose. His eyes reddened further, his face full of hurt.

“You’re lying! You hate me. You’re deliberately keeping me from earning a living! My family’s poor. Do you have any idea how much I need this job? You want me dead just because I’m poor?”

A few employees peered through the doorway.

I looked at him quietly, my gaze moving from his limited-edition sneakers to the expensive watch on his wrist.

I knew that watch.

Patek Philippe. Half a million dollars.

I had wanted the same model at an auction once.

It sat in the display case while I held my paddle, hesitantly lifting it before lowering it to my lap.

I had thought about it for ages. In the end, I couldn’t bring myself to bid.

Now Elio was standing at my desk, complaining about his life, that watch peeking out from his cuff and catching the light.

I bought my clothes with money I earned. Which of the designer labels he was wearing hadn’t been paid for by my wife?

He spent our money, then came to me and played poor and helpless.

I was about to speak when he suddenly pitched forward.

His forehead struck the corner of my desk with a crack.

Blood ran down his face. He fell to the floor, clutching his head and screaming.

“Sigourney, help… Your husband hit me…”

I froze behind my desk.

Sigourney strode in, took one look at his bloody face, and glared at me.

“Ansel!”

She crouched and carefully helped him up.

“How could you hit him? He’s a student! You’re the company’s COO, and you’re attacking a young man? Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?”

I opened my mouth. Not a word came out.

She had never looked at me like that before.

It wasn’t that I had nothing to say. It was so absurd I couldn’t even find the energy to defend myself.

She helped Elio toward the door, then stopped without once looking back at me.

“You should resign. This company isn’t the place for you anymore.”

I sat in my chair, staring at the open door.

The employees outside looked away and drifted off.

I lowered my eyes to the papers on my desk, both hands braced against its edge.

Day faded into night outside the window. I stayed where I was.

Then I looked at the blood on the corner of my desk, still not quite dry, and laughed.

Sigourney and I had founded this company together. I had put up the money.

I owned half of it. Why should I leave just because she told me to?

My phone vibrated. A message from her appeared.

“Come home. We need to talk.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

Every light in the living room was on when I opened the front door.

Sigourney sat on the sofa. Elio huddled in the armchair beside her, his forehead bandaged, his eyes swollen and red.

My hand curled into a fist at my side. I looked at them without expression.

“Don’t bring him here again. He makes my skin crawl.”

I stayed where I was. She came closer and reached for my sleeve.I stepped back. Her hand stopped in the air.“When I used to grab your sleeve, you’d stop. Even when we fought, you always let me finish.”I looked at her without speaking. She lowered her head. As her hands dropped, the cuffs clicked softly together.“I always thought you’d never leave. You loved me so much. All I had to do was apologize, and you’d forgive me.”She looked up, tears pouring down her face.“I know it’s too late to say this. I just… I really want to go back. Back to when we first got together.”I swallowed and slowly looked away. The bailiff quietly prompted her to move. She hurried forward a step.“One last question. Then I won’t bother you again.”I looked back at her. She clasped her cuffed hands tightly.“Would things have turned out differently if I hadn’t cheated?”I watched her for a moment, then turned toward the exit. She tried to follow. The bailiff stopped her.My attorney opened the outside door

He jerked his head up, both hands gripping the table.“Life? No! He’s alive! How can you lock me up forever?”His lawyer tried to get him to sit. Elio whipped around toward Sigourney.“Say something! You promised you’d help me! You can’t just abandon me!”She avoided his eyes, her lips colorless. The bailiff pulled him back into place. He kept struggling to turn around. The judge turned a page and looked at Sigourney.“Sigourney. Your turn.”She used the back of her chair to get to her feet. Her legs trembled.“I didn’t know the evidence was fake. I didn’t know he’d hire someone to kill Ansel! I didn’t do any of that!”“You won’t be held responsible for things you weren’t involved in. But you personally approved the use of company funds to buy Elio gifts and transfer fifty million dollars.”She nodded quickly, her voice shaking.“I’ll pay it back. We can sell the watch. Everything else, too. Whatever’s left, I’ll pay it off!”She turned to me, tears dripping from her chin.“Ansel, plea

I took the witness stand. Sigourney didn’t take her eyes off me.“When you released those files, did you think about me going to prison?”She clutched a tissue, tears falling steadily.“I thought they were real. I even tried to keep it quiet for you. You insisted on throwing me out. I didn’t have a choice…”“As long as I resigned and stopped investigating you, you wouldn’t release them. Right?”She lowered her head, crushing the tissue in her hand.“Were you protecting me? Or threatening me with prison?”“I was scared! We built that company together. I couldn’t lose everything!”I watched her and slowly leaned back.“So to keep the company, you were willing to cost me my freedom?”Sigourney shook her head and pushed herself up against the table.“Ansel, do you remember when we first started the company? We worked late together every day. I stayed beside you through so much. Do those seven years really mean nothing to you?”I lowered my eyes, my fingers resting against my bare ring fing

He suddenly lunged forward and struck his forehead against the corner. Then he fell and shouted.“Sigourney, help! Your husband hit me!”Sigourney went rigid, staring up at the screen. In the video, she rushed into the office and crouched to help Elio up.“You should resign. This company isn’t the place for you anymore.”I watched and slowly drew my hands back into my lap.I hadn’t touched him that day.She hadn’t even looked at me before telling me to leave the company we had founded together. The prosecutor paused the video and turned to the receptionist.“Was the recording interrupted at any point between Elio entering the office and injuring himself?”“No. I stayed by the door the whole time. Ansel didn’t push him.”Elio turned away from the witness stand.Sigourney looked at me, tears running down her cheeks.“Why… Why didn’t I see it?”I looked back at her and swallowed.“I told you I didn’t push him. You heard me. You just didn’t believe me.”She pressed a hand to her chest. Her

My attorney handed the list of marital assets to the judge.“We ask that the marital assets be divided according to the agreement already upheld by the court. The company’s losses and other damages will be pursued separately.”The judge turned the last page, then looked up.“The marriage is dissolved. All divisible marital assets will go to Ansel under the terms of the agreement.”The gavel fell. Sigourney’s head snapped up.I took off my wedding ring, put it in my document folder, and stood.“You’re just leaving? Seven years of marriage, and all that’s left is paperwork?”I stopped. She braced herself against the table and rose.“The paperwork just makes what’s already happened official.”The bailiff approached her. She looked at me desperately.“What about the criminal trial? Are you really going to testify against me?”Several weeks later, the criminal trial began.I sat in the front row of the gallery. Sigourney and Elio each sat beside their defense attorneys. The hired driver was

Several months later, I sat by a window in my attorney’s office. He put a case update and an inventory of assets on the table.“Criminal charges have been filed. On top of falsifying evidence and bribery, Elio is facing charges including attempted premeditated murder. The police have the full payment trail and communications.”I turned a page. The scrape on my hand had faded to a faint mark.“What about Sigourney?”“She didn’t know the photographs were fake. That will be made clear. But there’s separate evidence supporting the false contracts and transfers she personally approved.”He took out an envelope and placed it at the corner of the table.“She sent this through her lawyer. She wants you to agree to a meeting. Says there are things she only wants to say to you.”I looked at the familiar handwriting on the envelope without reaching for it.“Anything about the case, she can tell her lawyer. I won’t agree to a private meeting.”Tess put the payroll records beside the file.“Everyon
