Chapter 4

Author: Quick Creating
Elio flinched and shrank back, his fingers clutching Sigourney’s sleeve.

Her face darkened. Finally, she lifted her chin toward the seat opposite her.

“Sit.”

I stayed where I was.

“What do you want to talk about?”

She got up, came over, and lowered her voice.

“There’s a small press conference at ten tomorrow morning. You have to be there. You’ll apologize to Elio in public, then announce that you’re resigning voluntarily.”

I stared at her face.

“What did you just say?”

“Apologize. Then resign. This has gotten out of hand. Everyone on the floor saw what happened. Elio needed three stitches. If he goes to the police, you could be charged with assault. You could end up in jail.”

“But I didn’t push him.”

She reached for my shoulder. I moved away.

Her hand hung in the air before she slowly lowered it. She sounded tired, but her tone softened again.

“Ansel, I’m thinking of you, too. It’s already gotten out of hand. If you apologize and step down now, at least you can leave with some dignity. That’s better than being led out by the police. I don’t want to see you locked up.”

I glanced at Elio in the armchair, then back at her.

“When you hid the fact that you were supporting him, you said it was for my sake. You didn’t want me to get the wrong idea. When you kept contacting him, that was for my sake, too. You didn’t want me to worry. Now you want me to apologize, resign, and hand everything over. Is that for my sake as well?”

I twisted my mouth into a smile.

“How noble of you, Sigourney. Should I thank you?”

Her face stiffened.

I looked them both over, still smiling bitterly.

“But fine. I’ll be there at ten tomorrow.”

Elio looked up in surprise, then quickly lowered his head and raised a hand to hide his smile.

Sigourney stared.

I didn’t look at him again. I went into the study and locked the door behind me.

Then I opened my laptop, logged into my email, and calmly sent my attorney an encrypted message.

The confirmation appeared on the screen.

No more chances, Sigourney.

The conference room was packed. Middle managers, department heads, and several representatives from our business partners were already there.

The clock on the wall read 9:58.

Sigourney sat at the head of the table, in the CEO’s seat. Elio was at the back of the room. His bandage had been replaced by a smaller, flesh-colored adhesive strip.

I opened the door. Every head turned.

I walked to the table and stopped.

Sigourney looked at me and gave me the floor.

“Ansel, if you have something to say, go ahead.”

I turned toward the door, my voice calm.

“Tess, come in.”

She entered carrying a stack of bound documents.

Moving quickly around the table, she handed a copy to everyone present.

Pages rustled through the room.

Someone sucked in a breath. A few department heads looked up and exchanged glances.

The last copy went in front of Sigourney.

She lowered her eyes and opened it to the first page.

The room fell quiet.

The moment she read it, her fingers tightened. Her casual expression turned to horror.

Clutching the papers, she shot to her feet. Her chair scraped loudly across the floor.

“Ansel! You…!”

I stayed where I was. She came closer and reached for my sleeve.I stepped back. Her hand stopped in the air.“When I used to grab your sleeve, you’d stop. Even when we fought, you always let me finish.”I looked at her without speaking. She lowered her head. As her hands dropped, the cuffs clicked softly together.“I always thought you’d never leave. You loved me so much. All I had to do was apologize, and you’d forgive me.”She looked up, tears pouring down her face.“I know it’s too late to say this. I just… I really want to go back. Back to when we first got together.”I swallowed and slowly looked away. The bailiff quietly prompted her to move. She hurried forward a step.“One last question. Then I won’t bother you again.”I looked back at her. She clasped her cuffed hands tightly.“Would things have turned out differently if I hadn’t cheated?”I watched her for a moment, then turned toward the exit. She tried to follow. The bailiff stopped her.My attorney opened the outside door

He jerked his head up, both hands gripping the table.“Life? No! He’s alive! How can you lock me up forever?”His lawyer tried to get him to sit. Elio whipped around toward Sigourney.“Say something! You promised you’d help me! You can’t just abandon me!”She avoided his eyes, her lips colorless. The bailiff pulled him back into place. He kept struggling to turn around. The judge turned a page and looked at Sigourney.“Sigourney. Your turn.”She used the back of her chair to get to her feet. Her legs trembled.“I didn’t know the evidence was fake. I didn’t know he’d hire someone to kill Ansel! I didn’t do any of that!”“You won’t be held responsible for things you weren’t involved in. But you personally approved the use of company funds to buy Elio gifts and transfer fifty million dollars.”She nodded quickly, her voice shaking.“I’ll pay it back. We can sell the watch. Everything else, too. Whatever’s left, I’ll pay it off!”She turned to me, tears dripping from her chin.“Ansel, plea

I took the witness stand. Sigourney didn’t take her eyes off me.“When you released those files, did you think about me going to prison?”She clutched a tissue, tears falling steadily.“I thought they were real. I even tried to keep it quiet for you. You insisted on throwing me out. I didn’t have a choice…”“As long as I resigned and stopped investigating you, you wouldn’t release them. Right?”She lowered her head, crushing the tissue in her hand.“Were you protecting me? Or threatening me with prison?”“I was scared! We built that company together. I couldn’t lose everything!”I watched her and slowly leaned back.“So to keep the company, you were willing to cost me my freedom?”Sigourney shook her head and pushed herself up against the table.“Ansel, do you remember when we first started the company? We worked late together every day. I stayed beside you through so much. Do those seven years really mean nothing to you?”I lowered my eyes, my fingers resting against my bare ring fing

He suddenly lunged forward and struck his forehead against the corner. Then he fell and shouted.“Sigourney, help! Your husband hit me!”Sigourney went rigid, staring up at the screen. In the video, she rushed into the office and crouched to help Elio up.“You should resign. This company isn’t the place for you anymore.”I watched and slowly drew my hands back into my lap.I hadn’t touched him that day.She hadn’t even looked at me before telling me to leave the company we had founded together. The prosecutor paused the video and turned to the receptionist.“Was the recording interrupted at any point between Elio entering the office and injuring himself?”“No. I stayed by the door the whole time. Ansel didn’t push him.”Elio turned away from the witness stand.Sigourney looked at me, tears running down her cheeks.“Why… Why didn’t I see it?”I looked back at her and swallowed.“I told you I didn’t push him. You heard me. You just didn’t believe me.”She pressed a hand to her chest. Her

My attorney handed the list of marital assets to the judge.“We ask that the marital assets be divided according to the agreement already upheld by the court. The company’s losses and other damages will be pursued separately.”The judge turned the last page, then looked up.“The marriage is dissolved. All divisible marital assets will go to Ansel under the terms of the agreement.”The gavel fell. Sigourney’s head snapped up.I took off my wedding ring, put it in my document folder, and stood.“You’re just leaving? Seven years of marriage, and all that’s left is paperwork?”I stopped. She braced herself against the table and rose.“The paperwork just makes what’s already happened official.”The bailiff approached her. She looked at me desperately.“What about the criminal trial? Are you really going to testify against me?”Several weeks later, the criminal trial began.I sat in the front row of the gallery. Sigourney and Elio each sat beside their defense attorneys. The hired driver was

Several months later, I sat by a window in my attorney’s office. He put a case update and an inventory of assets on the table.“Criminal charges have been filed. On top of falsifying evidence and bribery, Elio is facing charges including attempted premeditated murder. The police have the full payment trail and communications.”I turned a page. The scrape on my hand had faded to a faint mark.“What about Sigourney?”“She didn’t know the photographs were fake. That will be made clear. But there’s separate evidence supporting the false contracts and transfers she personally approved.”He took out an envelope and placed it at the corner of the table.“She sent this through her lawyer. She wants you to agree to a meeting. Says there are things she only wants to say to you.”I looked at the familiar handwriting on the envelope without reaching for it.“Anything about the case, she can tell her lawyer. I won’t agree to a private meeting.”Tess put the payroll records beside the file.“Everyon
