LOGINI was an ordinary mortal girl who lived at the foot of Mount Olympus. Caelum, King of the Gods, descended from the heavens for me once, transforming himself into a shower of gold. He took me to the peak of Olympus over every other god’s objection. He built a shrine on the mountain that belonged to me alone, every god on Olympus knew the same truth: I was the only mortal love of Caelum’s endless life. Then I gave birth to our daughter, Nia. The Fates declared her a cursed child whose existence would bring disaster to the gods, and Nia and I were sent back down to the small cottage at the foot of the mountain. Seraphina, Goddess of Flame, said she could help cleanse Nia of the curse, and with Caelum’s quiet consent she came every month and burned my daughter with divine fire. Nia screamed under that fire, sobbing for me . I ran into the temple to beg Caelum to stop it, and I found him in bed with Seraphina. The pure, holy Goddess of Flame was moaning beneath him. They threw me into the depths of Tartarus, where Seraphina handed me over to the Erinyes to be torn apart day after day. When Nia turned five, they finally let me out, but by then my Nia had been burned to ash. The day I was gathering her ashes, the message stone in my room suddenly lit up, and a projection flickered out of it: Caelum, as he had been five years ago. His eyes were full of joy and anticipation, and his voice was so gentle it almost made me believe time had folded back on itself. “Sweetheart, is it a boy or a girl? Did our child inherit my power?” In the projection his expression shifted, and the smile froze on his face. That was when the door of my room was pushed open, and the present-day Caelum, five years older than the man in the stone, strode inside. I turned the message stone around so the Caelum from five years ago could see Nia’s urn with his own eyes. “It’s a girl,” I said. “But she didn’t live long enough to inherit your power. She was burned to ash.”
View MoreCaelum was chained in the deepest level of the Pit of Lightning.By my order, every pain that touched him there was something Nia or I had already lived through. The time-reflection looped scenes of Nia’s abuse and forced him to watch, frame by frame. He was made to kneel on stone slabs the way Nia had, sometimes for half a day. He was burned with divine flame, then healed, then burned again. They wouldn’t let him die.He couldn’t die. The Pit doesn’t give that to anyone.Seraphina ended faster.Without godhood, her body rotted quickly. She was kept in the burning circle, taking the same divine flame Nia had taken, every day.The guards told me she cursed for the first few days. She called me a filthy mortal. She called Nia a damned omen. She called Caelum an ungrateful traitor. After a while she didn’t have the strength to curse, and only her lips moved. After a while more, even her lips stopped.I had someone describe how she looked at the end to Caelum. He didn’t react. But that sam
The younger Caelum came to me that same day. He laid out the plan to me, every part of it, and he asked me to wait a little longer.I didn’t wait.I pulled every frame from the time-reflection: Seraphina abusing Nia, Caelum and Seraphina in the temple together. All of it. I projected it onto the sky over Olympus. The whole sky became a screen. Every mortal could look up and see, and every god had nowhere to hide.Faith fell apart in a single night. Temples were torn down. Offerings were smashed. Furious mortals filled the streets with torches, shouting for the King of the Gods to pay.The divine world tipped toward chaos. That was when the younger Caelum stepped forward. He held the Thunderbolt Scepter that the older Caelum had given him. In front of every Olympian, he confessed to all of it and accepted his punishment. That same day, he signed a permanent contract. He transferred every drop of his divine blood and every shred of his power to me. The kingship of the gods, every divine
Caelum found me at Nia’s grave. The wind on the cliff was loud, and the stone was small with her name carved on it. The younger Caelum was on his knees in front of it, his forehead pressed against the stone, his shoulders shaking and not stopping.I sat on a rock beside him and watched, and I didn’t say anything. The older Caelum came up the mountain path at a run. He was thinner, the hollows under his eyes were deep, and he hadn’t slept in days.He ran over and reached for my hand.I pulled it back.He flinched, but he didn’t stop. He crouched so he could meet my eyes, his voice fast and broken. “Elara. I know everything now. What Seraphina did to Nia, I really didn’t know. I just—”He swallowed, looking for a version of it he could live with.“I just wanted you to stop being so stubborn. I wanted you to lean on me. I thought if I sent you to Tartarus, you’d come back softer.”I looked at him.So this was the reason. He had thrown me into hell because he wanted me “softer.” He had han
Caelum went back to the Golden Hall. He opened his own wrist and used his divine blood to call up the time-reflection.As the blood drained, his face went paler and paler, but he didn’t stop. The scenes unrolled.Everything Seraphina had done to Nia while he wasn’t there, all of it laid out in front of him.Nia curled up on the floor, twitching. Seraphina walking over and kicking her onto her back, then pinning her there with divine force so she couldn’t crawl away.Nia crying, reaching out, mumbling for her mama. Seraphina backhanding her across the face. The skin of a three-year-old splitting open in a red line.“Try crying again,” Seraphina said, crouching down and gripping her chin the way you’d grip a disobedient animal. “Go on.”The footage got worse. Seraphina made Nia kneel on the stone floor, sometimes for half a day. No kneeling, no healing salve. Nia’s tiny knees were ground raw, and blood seeped between the stones. The last scene. Seraphina poured the divine flame down Nia’
The next morning, two divine guards walked me into the side hall of the Council.I was wrapped in bandages, the burns still bleeding through, and I limped. The door opened, and Seraphina walked in.She waved the attendants out, and the moment the door shut, the look of holy compassion peeled away fr
Something jealous flashed in his eyes. He caught my chin in one hand and forced my head up.“Who were you talking to?”Before I could answer, he wrenched the message stone from me, and the moment his own divine power registered in it, a small, possessive smile touched his lips.“Sweetheart, I see. Y
I looked at his face in the stone and couldn’t speak.I wanted to know too. How had it come to this.Ten years ago, Caelum was the King of the Gods, and I was an ordinary mortal girl at the foot of Olympus. He came down to the mortal world on one of his sky rounds. He saw me, and he took me up to th
In the projection, the younger Caelum looked like he had been struck by his own lightning. His mouth worked open and shut before he finally forced out a pale, brittle smile. “Sweetheart, you’re joking. Tell me you’re joking.”I shut my eyes, wishing it could have been. The Caelum behind me, the one
