INICIAR SESIÓN"What are you doing here?"
A cold voice cut through the corridor. Sera looked up. Julian and Wells were walking Vivienne to her follow-up appointment. The three of them stood close together, like a perfect little family. Vivienne looked surprised, then sighed helplessly. "Sera, there's no need to be stubborn. If you wanted to wait for Julian, you didn't have to come to the hospital and block our way. Just come home. It's not like we're keeping you out... Though with you just getting out of prison, it might not look good for your image..." Was Mom here to wait for them? Did she regret not coming home with them? A strange flicker of joy shot through Wells. Then he pouted, remembering what she had said that day. "Mom, you're so fake. You clearly can't live without me and Dad, and you want to come home, but you keep pretending." Julian's brow furrowed. A sneer curled in his dark eyes. "I thought you actually had some backbone. You couldn't even last two days before coming to beg for peace. Sera, these tricks of yours only annoy me." Before he could finish, a voice called out from the pharmacy window. "Ms. Hale, your prescription is ready." Sera took the bag of medicine and gave a cool laugh. "I came to the hospital for medicine, obviously. As for you, you might want to get your head examined." Julian's face darkened under her rebuke. Then his frown deepened. She got sick right after getting out? Could prison really have been that bad? Just as Sera turned to leave, Wells grabbed her hand with his small fingers. "My graduation is in two days. Even if you're still mad, you should come back and go with me. After all, you're my... mom." He said the last word very softly. He glanced nervously at Vivienne, as if afraid she would be upset. Sera didn't even look at him. She pulled her hand free, her voice cold. "You've mistaken me for someone else's mother. I'm not yours." She turned to go. "Sera," Vivienne called after her, "I know you're embarrassed to come home because of the prison record. But taking care of your child is a mother's duty. You haven't looked after Wells for three years. Are you going to keep ignoring him?" Vivienne's voice was not quiet. Heads turned. Eyes fell on Sera. The words prison and ignoring spread through the crowd, and people began to whisper. "Excuse me. Ms. Lockhart?" A new voice interrupted. Sera looked up and saw a uniformed police officer walking straight toward Vivienne. "We received a report that two stone eagle sculptures were stolen from a residence. Those same sculptures appeared in your home during a recent TV segment. We need you to come with us." The crowd gasped. The famous actress Vivienne Lockhart is a thief? The corridor erupted. Some people pulled out their phones, flashes going off. After her initial shock, Vivienne's face flushed bright red. Before she could say a word, Sera coughed, a cold look settling over her pale face. She turned to Wells. "You're nine years old. You have the right to choose who you want as your mother. And I have the right not to be yours." The law only required her to provide support. It did not require her, as a mother, to love him. Then she looked at Vivienne. "As for you, Ms. Lockhart, those two eagles are my personal property. My husband on paper had no right to give them away. If you can't return them, you'll soon find out what jail feels like." Julian suddenly seized her wrist, his dark eyes turning icy. He looked at her face and was thrown off for a moment. The wrist in his palm was far too thin, and far too hot. She has a fever. He quickly lowered his gaze and tightened his grip, his voice cold. "Haven't you made enough trouble? What do you own that isn't part of the Blackwood family? I gave those eagles to Vivienne myself!" "Exactly!" Wells shouted. "If Great-Grandpa and Aunt Vivi hadn't made me try to understand you, I wouldn't want a vicious woman like you for a mother!" She won't even come to my graduation! His resentment grew, but so did a vague unease. The old Mom would never have been this cold to him. She would have done anything to please him and get him to go. She's like a completely different person. Sera listened to the two of them accuse her and felt only numbness and a thin sense of amusement. Maybe, in their eyes, her three years in hell weighed nothing next to the scrape Vivienne had suffered. The fever left her dizzy, and she could barely stay on her feet. She shook off Julian's hand and looked at him. Then she suddenly laughed. "You're disgusting, you know that? Mr. Blackwood talks so freely. Why don't you go find a jail cell to sit in?" Her words were nearly vicious, nothing like the woman she had been three years ago. Julian was almost stunned. Outside the hospital, Sera took a tissue and wiped the hand he had touched. One thought blazed in her mind. I need this divorce as soon as possible. Every second tangled up with Julian was endless torment. That night, Vivienne's scandal kept the whole city buzzing. Sera took her medicine and fell asleep. When she woke, groggy, she saw her best friend, Annie Whitmore, standing by the bed, still looking travel-worn from the airport. Annie looked exasperated. "You just got out of prison, and you're running a fever like this? I got back and you were almost at 104. Thank God it's finally come down." She brought Sera water and her pills. "If there's anything I can do, just say it." Sera didn't want Annie to see how badly the prison years had broken her. But looking at Annie, who hadn't changed at all in three years, she finally felt a little warmth. Her husband and son were unreliable. But a friend like this, she could still count on. She swallowed the medicine, lowered her eyes, and said, "Help me draft a divorce agreement. And help me find someone."He glanced down and saw that it was his executive assistant, Marcus, calling. He answered and walked to the window. "This had better be important, calling me this late.""Mr. Blackwood, we've found Hazel Grant. She's reportedly in New York, and I have her phone number. Should I send it to you?""Yes. Send it over.""Right away, sir."After the call ended, a message notification popped up on his phone. He glanced at it, then dialed the number, but no one answered.Maybe she's asleep.Without a second thought, he hung up.Meanwhile, in the bedroom next door. When Julian came out of the bathroom, he saw Sera's phone on the nightstand with its screen lit up. By the time he got closer, the call had already ended.Same old habit. She always keeps her phone on silent. They used to argue about it all the time, because she was never reachable at critical moments. The phone was locked with a password, so Julian couldn't get in. He ignored it and went to sleep. The next morning, when Sera woke u
"I'm not drunk!"Sera braced her hands on the arms of the chair and stood up quickly.Damian watched her stagger toward him, and his brow furrowed slightly."Walking like that, and you still say you're not drunk?" His thin lips curved, his tone casual. "Stubborn.""Mr. Blackwood!" Sera suddenly pointed her right index finger at him. "Step back a little.""What are you trying to do? You're not thinking of climbing over here again, are you?""I... I'm just trying to prove to you that I'm not actually drunk..."Sera stammered as she spoke. Before he could stop her, her hand was already on the glass railing."You're not just drunk. You're seriously drunk."Damian reached out on instinct to stop her from coming over. But before his hand even touched her wrist, she slapped it away. The next second, she lifted her leg and stepped over the railing. At the sight, Damian felt both amused and exasperated. This was truly unexpected.Sera climbing a railing, Sera treating a patient, Sera charging
"Of course. You only ever call Vivienne. Why would you think of me? You only reach out when you need something, before and now!"Sera's tone was cold and flat, her voice very low.She was about to sit up when Julian reached out, gripped her shoulders, and pressed her firmly down onto the bed."Sera, it's your own fault. You were wicked and framed Vivienne, and that's why you went to prison. If you were even a little more innocent, I wouldn't be at a loss for words with you...""What, is Mr. Blackwood justifying his misconduct? And he thinks it's my fault he cheated?""When did I ever cheat? Which of your eyes saw me do anything wrong?"His hand on her shoulder tightened.A terrifying chill came off him."Do I need to say it? Isn't it common knowledge?" Sera sneered. "Or did Vivienne fail to satisfy you, so you've come crawling back to your wife on paper?""I didn't intend to do anything to you.""Then why are you pinning me down?"Sera lifted her eyes to his cold, dark gaze, a chill s
Sera's hand holding the phone went still. This was the first time Damian had ever called her himself. He wouldn't call her over and over unless something important had happened. After a moment's hesitation, she pressed answer. "Mr. Blackwood...""The old man is having trouble breathing again. Would it be convenient for you to come over?"Without a second thought, Sera shot up from her chair. "Yes. I'll be right there."After hanging up, she hurried to the cabinet, took out her acupuncture and cupping sets, and headed straight for the door.As she walked, she told Annie, "I have to go out urgently. I may not be back tonight. I'm leaving Lily with you.""What happened?" Annie caught up quickly, her brow furrowed. "Is Grandpa Blackwood in trouble again?""Yes." Sera glanced back. "I'm leaving now.""Okay. Be careful on the road."The door closed, cutting off Sera's figure and Annie's voice.By the time Sera reached the estate by cab, it was eight in the evening. The entire house was brig
So he was here for Wells's parent-teacher conference. No wonder Vivienne had time to take Wells around today."No." Sera's tone was indifferent. "I'm here for something else.""This is a school, and an expensive one. What business could you possibly have here?" Julian's gaze darkened. "You wouldn't be doing something behind my back, would you?"He reached out and grabbed her arm.A sharp pain shot through her arm, and her brow furrowed."Let go."Her tone was cold, her eyes full of frost."What, does my life have to revolve around you and your son? Can't I have matters of my own? If I come to Wells's school, I can only be here for him?"Julian lowered his eyes and met her bright gaze. The chill in them was something he had never felt before. It was colder than the way she would look at a complete stranger...The moment she finished, Sera shook off his hand with all her strength.Just as she was about to leave, Julian strode forward and blocked her path. His voice was low. "You still ha
Sera paused.Very few people knew she was planning a clinic, and she hadn't said she was taking the shop to open one.How did he know that?Though she hesitated, she told the truth. "Yes.""I know a really nice space. Would you like to take a look?"His voice fell quiet as he lowered his eyes and watched her.Sera paused again. "Mr. Blackwood, you want to show me a space? Is it a friend's property?""Yes, it belongs to a friend." Damian had already reached for the back door of the car. "It's a two-story building. It used to be a tea house, used for entertaining clients. The tea house has moved to a new address, so the building is currently empty."By the time he finished, the car door was already open. She looked up and met his sincere gaze.He doesn't seem to be joking."All right. I'll go take a look."Sera climbed into the car and made eye contact with the man in the driver's seat. She recognized him. It was Damian's executive assistant, Marcus. He nodded in greeting, and she answe
