The Blackwood estate.

When Julian and Wells got home, Vivienne had already prepared dinner and was waiting for them.

Seeing no sign of Sera, she asked what had happened, and Julian told her everything.

She sighed. "Julian, this is all my fault. She must resent me for what happened three years ago. That's why she won't come home. And with a prison record, where else can she go?"

"Let her be," Julian said, his tone cold.

But when he pictured Sera standing there, he couldn't help frowning.

She hadn't just lost weight. She seemed like a different person.

His brow tightened with unease.

Did she really suffer that much in there?

How could that be? Vivienne had told him the inmates at the women's facility were perfectly decent. And he had arranged for someone to look after her. She'd had food and clothes. It was only three years for a mistake she had made.

Vivienne looked worried. "But what if your grandfather asks why she didn't come back? He specifically asked you to pick her up, Julian."

Years ago, Sera had saved old Mr. Blackwood's life, and he had adored her ever since.

It was why Julian had been pushed into the marriage, and why her family had paid such a hefty price for it.

Even after Sera went to prison, the old man still recognized only her as his granddaughter-in-law.

Julian didn't take it seriously.

"Don't worry. She's penniless. What future does she have without the Blackwoods? She's angry at me, but would she hold a grudge against Wells? His graduation is in two days. She'll be there."

Wells had skipped three grades and, at just nine years old, was already graduating from elementary school.

Everyone knew how much Sera loved her son. There was no way she'd miss a moment like that.

Wells pouted and snuggled into Vivienne's arms. "But I want Aunt Vivi to come to my graduation."

Vivienne tapped his nose and smiled. "All right. If you can talk your mom into coming home, Aunt Vivi will go with you. Honestly, with her record, it wouldn't be appropriate for her to attend something like that."

Wells paused.

Talk her into it?

Does Aunt Vivi want me to lie to her?

A flicker of hesitation crossed his face, then vanished.

If his classmates found out his mother had been in prison, nobody would ever want to talk to him again.

And since his dad didn't object, Wells nodded obediently.

Vivienne smiled and looked over the table full of food. "Such a shame. All this was made especially for Sera, and it's going to go to waste."

But for two days straight, Julian didn't hear a word from Sera.

She seemed to have truly made up her mind about the divorce. She no longer wanted anything to do with the father and son.

Frowning, he finally dialed her number.

All he got was a recording: The number you have dialed is not in service.

He stood there stunned.

Then it hit him. After three years in prison, her old phone number was long gone. Even her social media accounts had been deactivated.

He couldn't reach her at all.

A strange mix of panic and irritation rose in him.

His face hardened. He gave his assistant a cold order. "Find out Sera's current address and phone number. Now that she's out, we can't let the Blackwood name be dragged through the mud."

In the two days since her release, Sera had done nothing but fix up Lakeview Tower.

Once the divorce was final, she would be entitled to half of the marital property.

But before that, she needed a way to support herself. So she decided to return to an old passion: gemstone sculpting.

For three years, the penthouse had sat neglected, buried in dust.

Sera cleaned every corner, only to discover that the stone eagles that once guarded the entryway were gone.

She called the building management to ask.

"Three years ago, Ms. Lockhart was injured by some obsessive fans who were harassing her. She liked the sculptures, so Mr. Blackwood and his son sent them over to her house. They said it was to protect her."

Sera wasn't surprised at all.

She had carved those eagles for Julian and Wells with her own hands, pouring months of effort into them.

They were meant to protect the two of them.

But Julian had called them tacky and sent them back.

And then he had turned around and given her work to Vivienne.

To trample her good intentions, then use them to win another woman's favor?

After hanging up, Sera dialed 911.

When the line connected, she said calmly, "I'd like to report a theft. Some of my belongings were taken from my home."

Then she hung up.

After the officers took her statement, Sera was drained.

Once they left, she realized she was burning with fever.

She dragged herself to the hospital for medicine.

But when the doctor saw her injuries, his expression turned grim. "You have a lot of old wounds that never healed properly. Besides bruising from punches and kicks, there are also... needle marks. Your whole body is severely weakened. I strongly advise you to be admitted and rest, or else..."

"No."

Sera answered without any expression, calmly declining.

She was trained in botanical medicine and knew her own body well.

The women in prison were cruel, and they had been careful to leave injuries where the guards wouldn't see them.

If it weren't for her medical skill, she probably wouldn't have survived.

She hadn't died in there. So how could she die now that she was free?

Still, the thought that these wounds were the doing of her husband and the child she had carried for ten months made her feel bitterly ironic.

While the doctor was changing her dressing, Wells spotted her from across the hall.

He tugged on Julian's sleeve and pursed his lips. "Dad, why is she at the hospital? Is she sick?"

Julian's gaze followed his son's.

His brows drew together, and disgust flashed in his eyes.

Three years later, and she was still playing hard to get.

Sick? Please.

She's just putting on an act for me.

He glanced down and saw that it was his executive assistant, Marcus, calling. He answered and walked to the window. "This had better be important, calling me this late.""Mr. Blackwood, we've found Hazel Grant. She's reportedly in New York, and I have her phone number. Should I send it to you?""Yes. Send it over.""Right away, sir."After the call ended, a message notification popped up on his phone. He glanced at it, then dialed the number, but no one answered.Maybe she's asleep.Without a second thought, he hung up.Meanwhile, in the bedroom next door. When Julian came out of the bathroom, he saw Sera's phone on the nightstand with its screen lit up. By the time he got closer, the call had already ended.Same old habit. She always keeps her phone on silent. They used to argue about it all the time, because she was never reachable at critical moments. The phone was locked with a password, so Julian couldn't get in. He ignored it and went to sleep. The next morning, when Sera woke u

"I'm not drunk!"Sera braced her hands on the arms of the chair and stood up quickly.Damian watched her stagger toward him, and his brow furrowed slightly."Walking like that, and you still say you're not drunk?" His thin lips curved, his tone casual. "Stubborn.""Mr. Blackwood!" Sera suddenly pointed her right index finger at him. "Step back a little.""What are you trying to do? You're not thinking of climbing over here again, are you?""I... I'm just trying to prove to you that I'm not actually drunk..."Sera stammered as she spoke. Before he could stop her, her hand was already on the glass railing."You're not just drunk. You're seriously drunk."Damian reached out on instinct to stop her from coming over. But before his hand even touched her wrist, she slapped it away. The next second, she lifted her leg and stepped over the railing. At the sight, Damian felt both amused and exasperated. This was truly unexpected.Sera climbing a railing, Sera treating a patient, Sera charging

"Of course. You only ever call Vivienne. Why would you think of me? You only reach out when you need something, before and now!"Sera's tone was cold and flat, her voice very low.She was about to sit up when Julian reached out, gripped her shoulders, and pressed her firmly down onto the bed."Sera, it's your own fault. You were wicked and framed Vivienne, and that's why you went to prison. If you were even a little more innocent, I wouldn't be at a loss for words with you...""What, is Mr. Blackwood justifying his misconduct? And he thinks it's my fault he cheated?""When did I ever cheat? Which of your eyes saw me do anything wrong?"His hand on her shoulder tightened.A terrifying chill came off him."Do I need to say it? Isn't it common knowledge?" Sera sneered. "Or did Vivienne fail to satisfy you, so you've come crawling back to your wife on paper?""I didn't intend to do anything to you.""Then why are you pinning me down?"Sera lifted her eyes to his cold, dark gaze, a chill s

Sera's hand holding the phone went still. This was the first time Damian had ever called her himself. He wouldn't call her over and over unless something important had happened. After a moment's hesitation, she pressed answer. "Mr. Blackwood...""The old man is having trouble breathing again. Would it be convenient for you to come over?"Without a second thought, Sera shot up from her chair. "Yes. I'll be right there."After hanging up, she hurried to the cabinet, took out her acupuncture and cupping sets, and headed straight for the door.As she walked, she told Annie, "I have to go out urgently. I may not be back tonight. I'm leaving Lily with you.""What happened?" Annie caught up quickly, her brow furrowed. "Is Grandpa Blackwood in trouble again?""Yes." Sera glanced back. "I'm leaving now.""Okay. Be careful on the road."The door closed, cutting off Sera's figure and Annie's voice.By the time Sera reached the estate by cab, it was eight in the evening. The entire house was brig

So he was here for Wells's parent-teacher conference. No wonder Vivienne had time to take Wells around today."No." Sera's tone was indifferent. "I'm here for something else.""This is a school, and an expensive one. What business could you possibly have here?" Julian's gaze darkened. "You wouldn't be doing something behind my back, would you?"He reached out and grabbed her arm.A sharp pain shot through her arm, and her brow furrowed."Let go."Her tone was cold, her eyes full of frost."What, does my life have to revolve around you and your son? Can't I have matters of my own? If I come to Wells's school, I can only be here for him?"Julian lowered his eyes and met her bright gaze. The chill in them was something he had never felt before. It was colder than the way she would look at a complete stranger...The moment she finished, Sera shook off his hand with all her strength.Just as she was about to leave, Julian strode forward and blocked her path. His voice was low. Sera paused.Very few people knew she was planning a clinic, and she hadn't said she was taking the shop to open one.How did he know that?Though she hesitated, she told the truth. "Yes.""I know a really nice space. Would you like to take a look?"His voice fell quiet as he lowered his eyes and watched her.Sera paused again. "Mr. Blackwood, you want to show me a space? Is it a friend's property?""Yes, it belongs to a friend." Damian had already reached for the back door of the car. "It's a two-story building. It used to be a tea house, used for entertaining clients. The tea house has moved to a new address, so the building is currently empty."By the time he finished, the car door was already open. She looked up and met his sincere gaze.He doesn't seem to be joking."All right. I'll go take a look."Sera climbed into the car and made eye contact with the man in the driver's seat. She recognized him.
