Chapter 3

Author: Rain Sounds
Dad tried to explain patiently, saying, "You can just send me the medical records. I'm a doctor, so I can definitely take good care of you, Aaron."

Aaron bit his lip and remained silent. That reluctant, tight-lipped look made it seem as though all of us were forcing his hand.

Yvonne predictably shielded Aaron. "That's enough. Aaron is already feeling unwell. Do you guys seriously need to take turns grilling him?"

Emily was so enraged that she laughed out of pure frustration. "We're literally offering solutions here! He won't take the medication, he won't accompany Uncle Brandon to the hospital, and he won't get in the ride we called for him. What does he actually want from us?"

Aaron's posture stiffened for a moment. "Do you think I'm pretending to be sick, Emily? I'm just scared and want Yvonne with me. Is that really such an unreasonable request?"

Yvonne's expression hardened. "Aaron has already made himself clear. What more do you want from him?"

Emily was at a loss for words.

Dad gradually tightened his grip on the glass of water.

I glanced at the electronic display. It was already 11:08 am, and A027 was still flashing on the display. "You have 22 minutes left, Yvonne."

Yvonne rubbed her temples, sounding completely exhausted. "I know, but waiting one more day for a piece of paper doesn't change the fact that I'm marrying you, Charlie. Is our eight-year relationship really so fragile that it'll crumble over something like this?"

Aaron leaned weakly against Yvonne's shoulder as he tried to smooth things over. "Please don't be upset, Charlie. You're still the one Yvonne loves most. I'm just borrowing her for a moment."

I had heard that excuse plenty of times. Aaron had already stolen my time with Yvonne during my birthdays, our anniversaries, and the 26 times we tried to register our marriage. He was about to take the 27th one too.

I looked right at Yvonne and said, "I'm going to ask you one last time, Yvonne. Do you intend to go over to Counter 3 with me or stay with Aaron?"

Yvonne's expression turned cold. "Do you seriously have to make me pick a side while Aaron is sick, Charlie?"

I nodded and dropped the argument. "You can do as you please, but I'm signing those papers today, Yvonne."

It was 11:12 am when Mom returned from the parking lot with two boxes of wedding favors. She caught sight of Yvonne kneeling by the bench the moment she walked in, resting her hand on Aaron's back.

She slowed down the moment she noticed that I was standing all by myself at the counter with the folder. "Why haven't you registered the marriage yet?"

Emily bit back her temper and explained everything that happened.

Mom heard her out, ignored Aaron completely, and turned straight to Yvonne. "You have all the paperwork, and the counter is all yours. Is it really impossible for you to spend ten minutes signing the papers before taking Aaron to the hospital?"

Yvonne rose to her feet and said, "Aaron doesn't feel well right now, Diana. We can sign the papers anytime, but medical issues can't wait."

Mom stared at her for a moment before saying, "I didn't speak up when you called it off the first time. I even told Charlie to be more understanding when you cancelled on the tenth time. It's the 27th time today, Yvonne."

She spoke softly, but everyone around gradually fell silent. "What makes you think Charlie is still going to wait for you?"

Yvonne's expression darkened slightly. "I'm not asking him to wait for me forever. I'll reschedule and make things right with him once Aaron's condition is stable."

Mom scoffed. "Do you think Charlie gives a damn about you making it up to him? He just wants you by his side today!"

Aaron pulled himself up using the back of the bench. His eyes were brimming with tears. "Please don't blame Yvonne for this, Diana. It's all my fault. I shouldn't have tagged along. I'll get out of here this instant, even if it means passing out on the way to the hospital. I don't want to get in their way again…"

He merely lost the privileges he had gained by acting helpless. He had initially intended to edit the marriage registration video into a regular vlog and post it online, but after seeing the footage, his team didn't just agree with him as they usually did. Wendy continued, "You can ask for Aaron to be looked after, but you don't get to ask Charlie to constantly put his life on hold for him."Dylan turned pale.Kelly turned to Yvonne and asked, "Why didn't you just register the marriage first?"Yvonne lowered her head and replied, "I thought Charlie was going to wait for me…"Kelly closed her eyes for a moment, finally realizing that this whole situation wasn't caused by an impulsive act.Wendy sat back down next to me. "I didn't snatch Charlie from Yvonne. Charlie came to me of his own accord. I won't allow anyone to pressure him to go back since he chose me."I looked at her profile, suddenly feeling a lump in my throat. I had worked so hard to prove I was worthy of being chosen by Yvonne over the past eight years, only for me to suddenly realize that the right choice was never something I needed to fight for, and it was never something I needed to wait for.Mom remained silent for a considerable time before taking my hand and la

I continued, "I gave you plenty of chances today, too. I had the medications and car prepared, and my father even offered to accompany Aaron to the hospital. You kept choosing Aaron when my mother and I asked you on two separate occasions. "I even gave you one last chance during the final minute. You were the one who told me that it made no difference when we got our marriage certificate, Yvonne."Yvonne's lips trembled as she said, "I-I just thought—""What were you thinking back then?"Yvonne fell silent for a moment before finally saying in a raspy voice, "I just thought you'd never really walk away."I suddenly burst out laughing. It turned out that was all there was to it. "You knew all along it would hurt me. You just didn't think I'd actually walk away."Yvonne stood rooted to the spot, completely rendered speechless.Just then, more footsteps sounded outside the door, and Aaron walked in with Dylan supporting him. He looked much better than he had earlier at the city ha

Wendy had barely sat down when she stood up and bowed respectfully toward Mom and Dad. "I know today's decision was unexpected, but I'm marrying Charlie because I want to. It's not because I'm trying to clean up someone else's mess, and it certainly wasn't on impulse either. "Charlie will decide when the wedding happens, if we have one at all. You can take your time getting to know me during that period."Mom looked serious. "You've already gotten your marriage certificates, yet you're only asking us to get to know you now, huh?"Wendy paused for a moment before saying, "I'm willing to be evaluated over the long term."Emily couldn't help but burst out laughing. In the end, the tension that had been building all morning finally started to clear.Wendy brought out another document before all the dishes were even served.I furrowed my brow and asked, "What is this?"Wendy pushed the document toward me and replied, "It's just a rough draft for our pre- and post-nuptial arrangemen

Third-Person's POVAaron didn't suffer from any bleeding or acute symptoms. The nurse asked offhandedly while checking the paperwork, "Didn't you make an appointment three days ago to have a sedated endoscopy today? You were supposed to check in at 10:30 am. What took you so long, Mr. Sutton?"Yvonne stood there stunned. "You made an appointment three days ago?"Aaron's expression faltered. "I initially had no intention of undergoing the procedure. I just figured I should come to the hospital since my stomach condition suddenly flared up this morning, Yvonne…"The nurse looked down to review the paperwork and said, "It seems like the accompanying family info was filled out beforehand. You're Yvonne Sharp, right?"Yvonne's name was clearly listed right there on the form. She stared at the text in silence for a long time. She finally realized that Aaron didn't need her just because of some stomachache. He had already known three days ago that he needed someone to accompany him fo

Mom said, "You'd better stop messing with Charlie since the paperwork is already being processed, Yvonne."Yvonne said hoarsely, "He's not even in love with Wendy."Mom looked straight into her eyes and asked, "Did you ever appreciate Charlie when he loved you?"That single sentence left Yvonne completely speechless. The room where we took our photos was small, featuring only two chairs against a creamy white backdrop.I took a seat and noticed that my shirt collar was all messed up from being tugged on earlier. I was just about to fix it when Wendy suddenly took a silver tie clip from her suit pocket. I was stunned. "Why do you have this?"Wendy replied nonchalantly, "I found it in the car last month."I recognized it immediately. I had dropped it while sitting alone on the steps of the city hall after our 26th failed attempt to register our marriage. Aaron's cat had gone missing that day, so Yvonne had stayed out all night looking for it. I waited outside until the staff went
