Chapter 2

Author: Noorie
The crowd went silent, and my father's face turned pale instantly. He was a man who valued his reputation. So, he stepped up, pointing his fingers at me.

“Stop putting allegations on others while you miss the auspicious time yourself.” He said, “Besides, Celeste’s transformation into a vampire was defective and she has only a few years to live. Alaric is the only man she loves. Can't you let her be with him for the last few years of her life and marry him later?”

“I can't believe you would be this selfish, Elara.”

“Selfish and I? Ever since the day she came to our family, all that I have done is sacrifice, Dad. But, I guess, that doesn't concern you at all.” I said as I shot a short glance at Alaric, who had Celeste by his side. He didn't even pretend to care.

“One more sacrifice…” I said, “I'm okay with it.”

Having said that, I turned to leave. I heard Celeste’s voice from behind, laced with feigned concern, “Elara, don't be mad. After I die, Alaric is all yours.”

As if stung by her words, Alaric quickly pulled her in his embrace. “Don't ever talk of dying, Celeste. It breaks my heart to even think that one day you would be gone.”

My heart shattered into a million pieces. But I did not let my tears fall and simply walked out.

However, just as I reached my car on the highway, my instincts told me something was wrong. Then, I recalled the faces in the crowd. Those were the same people who attacked me earlier.

Fuck, they are going to attack our clan. I thought.

The guests in the ceremony were innocent. Most of them were invited by me. I could not let them die.

I immediately informed our Clan’s elders and rushed to the cathedral.

The cathedral, once a sanctuary of betrayal, had become a slaughterhouse of screams.

A giant muscular werewolf rushed towards the aisle where Alaric and Celeste stood, frozen by the sudden attack.

"Alaric!" I gasped, my instinct still tied to the dying hum of our bond.

He was already moving. With supernatural speed, Alaric blurred toward the altar. His eyes met mine for a fraction of a second—a cold, calculating glance that weighed my life against his 'legal wife’s' safety.

Without a word, he turned his back on me. He scooped Celeste into his arms, shielding her body with his own.

“I never expected you to be this vicious, Elara.” My father's voice tore through the crowd, fighting the wolves. “To ruin Celeste’s wedding, you led our enemy to the wedding.”

"You even bribed them with the heirloom of Dad's lineage. That just crossed the line, Sister." Celeste interrupted before I could speak in my defence.

My gaze landed on the gemstone pendant in Alaric's hands. His eyes were ice cold as he spat, "I retrieved it from one of them."

“I didn't-” I wanted to say more. I wanted to tell them how desperately I had fought to protect that pendant before they finally tore it from my neck on the highway. I didn't use it to bribe the wolves. I was robbed.

But, that's when my gaze landed on Celeste’s smug smile.

She did all this. Just to frame me.

Before I could explain or confront her, she threw herself in Alaric's arms, sobbing, “Alaric, I’m so afraid. Will I die tonight? We haven't even consummated our wedding yet.”

In return, Alaric stroked her hair gently and said, “Don't be afraid, Celeste. With me around, no one can touch you.”

Having said that, he pulled her into his arms. My father cleared the way while he walked, no one sparing a glance over me. No one noticed that two strong wolves had already clutched my throat, just seconds away from stabbing a dagger inside me.

Just when they reached the entrance, I called from behind. One last time.

“Alaric…” I whispered, “I’m pregnant.”

He stopped instantly. Conceiving a child for a vampire is rare. Thus, very few of us, pure-bloods, were left. And whoever manages to have a child naturally eventually becomes the lord of the clan.

I knew how important it was for Alaric to conceive a child. He immediately turned to look back. His eyes frowned as he saw the dagger close to my chest.

I took a sigh of relief. I was saved now.

But then, his eyes darkened.

“Stop lying, Elara.” He said, his voice cold and indifferent, “Even if you are pregnant, these wolves dare not do anything to the person who has hired them to ruin the wedding.”

“Drop the act, no one is believing it anymore.” He spat before he turned his back at me and left with Celeste and Dad through the side exit.

"You have no right to stop me, Alaric." I said, "I'm a free soul now. The only string that had linked me once, our son, you let him be devoted by the same wolves."Alaric’s composure crumbled. He dropped to one knee, the same way my father had."Elara, please," he choked out, his dark eyes shimmering with a terrifying vulnerability. "I have nothing left. I burned my bridges, my name, and my soul to find my way back to this gate. Forgive me for leaving you that night. Forgive me for being the blade instead of the shield. I really wish I could go back in time and save my son, my child. I really-"I looked at him. I saw the man who had promised me the stars and delivered only the void. I saw the deep remorse and guilt in his eyes, but felt nothing for him. He deserved to live with it."I gave my forgiveness to the wind a long time ago, Alaric," I said, my voice devoid of malice, which I knew hurt him more than any scream. "There is no 'back.' There is only forward. And I am going there al

First, I attended Millie's wedding, then I went to visit my Mom's tomb before leaving for good. When the car slowed to a crawl near the rusted iron gates of our ancestral lands, I stepped out into the damp night air.The transition was jarring; the polished leather of the sedan was replaced by the smell of wet earth and decaying leaves.I hadn't gone a mile when I saw a figure huddled against a weeping willow near the creek. The man was dressed in rags that might have once been fine silk, his frame skeletal and trembling. As I drew closer, the scent reached me—sour wine and the unmistakable stench of a broken spirit. He looked up, and for a heartbeat, I didn't recognize him. Silas, the man who had commanded legions and held the High Committee in the palm of his hand, was gone. In his place was a beggar with hollowed cheeks and eyes clouded by cataracts."Elara?" he wheezed, his voice a dry rattle. He tried to stand, his knees buckling. "My... my daughter?"I stopped five paces away, my

"Go back?" I repeated, my voice flat, almost mechanical. I stood up and paced the length of the small kitchen, my eyes landing on the rusted blade."Millie, we had an agreement. I am dead to that world. I am Professor Elara Vance now. I have a lecture at nine tomorrow.""Forget the lecture!" Millie hissed. "Elara, I'm taking the Eternal Vows in two days, and I'm not doing that in the absence of my confidante.""You are wedlocking your arrangement with Rafael?" I said. "Congratulations, Millie. I wish you happiness. He is a loyal man. But-""There is no but, Elara. I have prepared the ceremony outside our Clan, keep it a secret, and invited only a few people just so my bestie could attend it. So, I won't hear 'No' as your answer."The line crackled. Before I could explain my inability to join her ceremony, she hung up.I had no choice left.An hour later, a sleek black sedan with tinted windows—wholly out of place in my gritty neighborhood—pulled up to the curb. I climbed in, the scent

Elara's POVSix months have passed by since I left the world I belonged and chose to make my residence in the Human world. The rain in the Human Realm didn't smell of ozone and sulfur like it did in the Highlands; it smelled of damp earth and exhaust. To me, it was the scent of freedom.I sat in a cramped, dimly lit apartment in the heart of a city that never slept. On the table before me lay the remnants of my past: a forged passport, a vial of silver-nitrate solution, and a rusted blade. That's all I needed for my defence. After I left my House, I only had to discover the city where the Sun rests most of the time. I joined the local university as a History Professor. When you have lived for centuries, your memory becomes the history for most of the people. Later, I was promoted to become the head of the Archeological research team and led several students to different parts of the world in seeking history. It helped keeping myself low profile and made it difficult for people to trace

The silence that followed was deafening. Alaric didn't scream. He didn't roar. He simply looked at her with an indifference that was more terrifying than his rage."You're right, Celeste," Alaric whispered, his voice a ghost of the man he had been minutes ago. "I am guilty. I am a monster who slaughtered his own future. But a monster’s first instinct is to destroy the thing that deceived it."He didn't snap her neck. That would be a mercy. Instead, he threw her toward Silas. The father—the man who had spent years shielding his 'fragile' daughter—didn't reach out to catch her.He watched her collapse at his feet like a piece of refuse."Fenris," Alaric said, not breaking eye contact with Celeste. The werewolf tilted his head. "Lord Alaric?""You said your pack doesn't play 'wedding' for free," Alaric said coldly. "And Celeste promised you the dowry of House Silas. But she no longer has a House. And she certainly has no dowry."Celeste’s eyes widened. "Alaric, what are you doing?""Since

The air in the rest chamber didn't just turn cold; it died. Alaric’s hand was a vice of iron around Celeste’s throat, his knuckles white, his eyes burning with a primal, predatory rage that even the werewolf Fenris took a cautious step back from."Alaric..." Celeste gasped, her hands clawing at his wrists. Her face, usually a mask of fragile innocence, was contorting. "You... you misheard. I was... I was practicing a script! A play for the charity gala!"A play?" Alaric’s voice was a low, vibrating growl. "You spoke of wolves. You spoke of Blackwood Bridge. You spoke of my child being dead."He slammed her back against the oak door. The heavy wood groaned. "The payment, Celeste. The dowry. The 'sacrifices' of our fighters. Was that part of the script, too?""It’s Elara!" Celeste shrieked, tears springing to her eyes—the practiced, shimmering tears that had always worked before. "She set this up! She’s using voice-mimicry magic to frame me because she knew you were leaving her! She want
