Chapter 4

Author: Palma W
My grandfather looked at me. "Apologize first. Then maybe I'll show you."

My back was pressed against the wall, and every breath felt like another blow to the ribs. When Marco stepped forward, I immediately tucked the arm holding the jacket behind my back.

"I can tell you exactly what I did that night." I looked at my grandfather. "But you won't even let me see it. Am I just supposed to admit to whatever you accuse me of?"

My brother started to say something, but my grandfather raised a hand to stop him. Marco fell silent. I lowered my hand and leaned against the wall. They weren't going to explain anything to me.

Enzo stood at the end of the covered walkway and suddenly said, "I'll show you."

He walked over and asked Marco to take Grandpa back to his place in town. They'd had enough drama for one day. He'd handle the rest.

Marco took my document pouch out of his pocket and handed it to Viola. She folded my passport in half and slipped it into her leather bag beside her keys.

"Just don't hurt her too badly," my brother said quietly.

I looked at him. The bruises on my neck still ached, and all he could do was tell them not to hurt me too badly. When he turned to help my grandfather, I didn't call out to him again.

Once the car had left the estate, Enzo crouched in front of me and set a few printed pages on my knees. They were the divorce papers my lawyer had sent me. I'd tucked them into my suitcase before I left.

"You really have to leave here?"

"Yes."

"You don't want to be my wife anymore?"

I nodded. He wiped the dried blood from the corner of my mouth with the back of his finger. His voice softened, just like it used to when we were alone. "You don't want Leo either?"

I shoved his hand away so hard I doubled over in pain.

"What gives you the right to speak for him?"

Enzo didn't explain. Once I'd caught my breath, he took my arm and led me toward the guest wing. Viola walked ahead with the tablet, glancing back now and then as if she were afraid I'd change my mind.

When she reached a door, she gripped the key and stared at me. "When you go in, don't scream or rush forward."

From inside came the soft clink of a cup being set on a table. I looked up at her, then at Enzo.

"Who else is in there?"

"You don't get to ask."

I stopped. The window at the end of the hall faced the courtyard. I used a chair for support as I shuffled over and reached for the latch. Someone outside looked up at the noise, but Enzo slammed the window shut and grabbed my shoulder.

"If you still want to know, come in with me."

This time he didn't keep his voice down. I stared at the tablet in Viola's hand and didn't try the window again. Whatever was on it had been enough to turn my brother and Sofia against me. I had to see for myself what they were using to make me admit I'd done something wrong.

Viola finally unlocked the door.

The first thing I saw was a pair of kids' slippers by the bed. Then a piece of bread on the table with one bite taken out of it. A little boy sat under the desk lamp, his head down, playing with a toy car that was missing a door. There was a crescent-shaped scar between his left thumb and index finger.

He was taller than the child I remembered, and his hair was cut shorter. My grip on Enzo's arm slowly loosened. I stared at his face, wanting to go to him, but my legs wouldn't move.

The boy looked up at my face and slowly tightened his grip on the little car.

I wanted to say Leo's name, but I couldn't get it out. For 18 months, I'd dreamed of finding him in his room, again and again. Every time I reached out to touch him, the lights went out. Sometimes I'd wake up still searching the bed for his slippers.

Viola held out an arm to stop him. He leaned around it and looked at the little jacket in my arms, stiff with ash and water.

"Mommy, why did it take you so long to come back?"

I lunged toward him, but Enzo caught me around the waist from behind. The pain nearly made me collapse. He shut the door with his other hand and held me back.

18 months ago, I'd held this jacket at my son's funeral. Now he was sitting on a bed just a few steps away, calling me Mommy.

More than a year later, I saw that video again in court. On the screen, I watched the hand lower the bar and instinctively pressed a hand to my ribs, though they'd healed long ago. I'd thought I was ready to watch the whole video this time. But when Leo appeared behind the glass, I had to look away. The defense attorney asked if I admitted to closing that door."I do.""And you knew someone was inside?""Enzo told me there were armed intruders inside. He told me to shut the door and said my son was already in Viola's car." I held on to the glass of water in front of me. "I didn't know Leo was in there, and I didn't set the fire."Enzo looked over at me from across the room. That look used to silence his men and me. This time, I didn't stop until I'd said everything I came to say.The old phone recording had been verified, along with records showing where Leo had been cared for after the fire. The original reports and witness testimony filled in the rest. My lawyer had already walked me

It wasn't until I got to the hospital that I found out two of my ribs were broken. The doctor treated my injuries and put a brace on my left wrist. Even breathing hurt. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my grandfather raising his cane again. But the nurses always warned me before touching me, and little by little, I began to relax. When the police came to question me, I instinctively sat up, only to wince as pain shot through my ribs."He's going to show you the video." I clutched the sheet. "After you watch it, are you going to send me back?"The officer had me lie back down and gave me a moment to catch my breath. He didn't ask me to defend myself over the fire. He started with what had happened tonight. "Who had the gun? Who stopped you from leaving?"I said Enzo's name. Then he asked who had hurt my wrist and my neck. I looked down at my bandaged left wrist. It took me a while to answer. He told me to focus on getting treated first. They could take my full statement later. I watch

Enzo backed toward the stairs with Leo in his arms and ordered someone to bring the car around.I followed him out, using the wall for support. The pain in my ribs made every step a struggle. Leo kept reaching for me and twisting in Enzo's arms. Afraid he'd fall, I told him to stay still."Look at me, baby. I'm right here."Enzo turned toward the stairs and shouted down for the car again. My grandfather followed us out. "Put the gun down, Enzo. We can sit down and talk this through.""Talk about what?" Enzo pointed at me. "Weren't you all just saying she couldn't take the boy? Now you're on her side?"Marco stood in front of me, his shoulders stiffening at Enzo's words. I didn't wait for him to respond. I turned to Sofia and asked for her phone. I couldn't stand there arguing while Enzo took Leo away from me again.Sofia instinctively covered the old phone against her chest. I shook my head. "Not that one. Give me yours. I'm calling the police."Sofia tucked the old phone into the insi

Enzo grabbed Viola's wrist and forced her hand down."Do you know what you're doing?""I do." Viola couldn't pull free, and her voice rose with every word. "For eighteen months, I took care of your son. I kept him hidden because you asked me to. And now that everything's falling apart, you're going to stand there and blame me for all of it?"Marco stepped between them and pulled Enzo back. "Let's talk this through. We're family. Can't we work this out?""Let her finish." I gripped the back of the chair, cutting my brother off before he could smooth things over again.Viola backed up to the table. Her fingers were shaking so badly it took her two tries to unlock the phone. She opened a photo first and held up the phone for us to see.Leo lay wrapped in a blanket in the back seat of a car, soot still in his hair and his lips parted. Viola's old leather bag sat next to him. The photo was dated the day of the fire.Half his little foot stuck out from under the blanket. I stared at it and s

As soon as Enzo hung up, he reached for Leo.Leo clung to my sleeve. When Enzo yanked him, he stumbled forward a step. I wrapped my arms around his waist. Sweat beaded on my forehead from the pain, but I pulled him close and held on."They've already heard him." I looked at Enzo. "If you hide him again, what are you going to tell them?"Soon, footsteps sounded in the hall. Marco pushed the door open first. When he saw Leo, he froze with his hand still on the doorknob."Little Lion?"That was my brother's old nickname for him. Leo looked up. "Uncle Marco, why didn't you come find me?"Marco crouched and reached out, then pulled his hand back. In the end, he only touched Leo's hair. My eyes stung as I watched. I almost pushed Leo into his arms like I used to, but the moment I moved my left wrist, pain stopped me.My grandfather came in behind him and had to hold on to the table before he could sit down. His lips moved a few times, but nothing came out.Sofia came too. Marco had called he

Leo slid off the bed and took two steps toward me.I didn't want to scare him by lunging again. I held on to the door frame and just raised the little jacket. He reached out and touched the sleeve, then wrinkled his nose. "That hasn't fit me in a long time. I don't want to wear it.""You don't have to." I took his hand. "I'll buy you a new one."His palm was warm. His fingers were longer now, but he still reached for my index finger first. I lowered my head until my forehead touched his, my nose brushing his soft hair. Only then could I say his name. "Leo."He tilted his face up to look at me. I said it again, and my tears fell on the back of his hand. He flinched, but he didn't pull away. I loosened my grip on his hand but couldn't bring myself to let go, afraid that the moment I did, he'd be gone.A week before the fire, he'd told me his sleeves were tight. I'd promised to take him shopping for his birthday. I brought the clothes home later, but I never even took the tags off. Every
