Chapter 2

Penulis: Fish Mince
When the people around heard what was happening, Michael couldn't help asking, curiosity written all over his face, "Oh, do you know her, Mr. West?"

Ivan's expression shifted. There was some annoyance there, maybe even a hint of pity, but he quickly covered it with his usual cold indifference.

"Oh, she's just a waitress who used to work for me," he said, making no effort to hide the mockery in his voice or the disdain in his eyes.

Then, he wrapped his arm around Kelly as if putting on a show and walked away. That cold attitude of his hadn't changed a bit, and it was still as detestable.

I turned to the staff and tried to explain, "You're mistaken. I'm not here for work. I'm waiting for someone."

The staff just laughed, a mocking look on her face, like she had already figured me out. "Miss, this is a members-only club. Please show me your membership card."

Of course, I didn't have one. I was here with my husband, Alex Ward, and the membership card was with him.

When she saw me looking awkward, the mocking smile on her face only grew. "You should really check the mirror. People like you don't belong here. If you're going to make up a story, at least try to dress for it. And by the way, the macaron you just ate was made by a Michelin-starred chef from Fiora. Those aren't cheap."

She gave a fake smile, then added sharply, "Since you can't prove you're a member, you'll need to pay full price for what you ate. That comes up to five hundred and sixty dollars. How are you planning to pay?"

"I don't have my phone with me," I said.

Her attitude flipped in an instant, and she snapped, "Security, get this freeloader out of here!"

In no time, security guards started to gather around me.

"Stop." Ivan, who had nearly left, suddenly turned back.

He strode over, hands in his pockets, his face as serious and cold as ever, and stopped right in front of me. "I'll pay for her. Put it on my account."

He turned to me and spoke loud enough for everyone to hear, "Millia, I know you're still not over me, but we've already broken up. I'm with Kelly now. There's no way we're getting back together. So please, stop using tricks to bump into me. Let's just end things peacefully and keep a little dignity for each other."

I opened my mouth to explain, but Ivan didn't let me get a word in by raising his hand. "That's enough. Don't say anything. I know things aren't easy for you right now. Tell me, how much do you need? I can lend you some money, just don't bother me again."

He pulled out his phone, ready to wire me some money right there.

Kelly, who had been standing nearby, didn't look too happy about any of this. She made a point of moving even closer to Ivan, practically gluing herself to his side.

With a gentle smile, she spoke softly, "Millia, I know you still care about Ivan, but he's with me now, and we're about to get married. Don't you… Don't you think this is a little out of line?

"If someone who didn't know better saw this, they'd probably think you were some mistress. Ivan is just being nice. Even after breaking up, if he sees an ex having a particularly hard time, he would help out. Still, we're all adults here. We should at least keep things respectful, don't you think?"

I got her message loud and clear. She was trying to insult me in a veiled way. But I hadn't said a word from the beginning to the end, and it was Ivan making up this whole narrative that I was some desperate ex who couldn't move on.

I smiled politely and replied, "I never asked him to send me anything. Ivan is the one who insisted. Maybe you should have a word with him instead. Also, I wish you both all the happiness in the world and may you two grow old together."

I ignored them and sat back down on the couch to wait for my husband, Alex. I didn't have my phone, and if I left now, he would probably send the security team to hunt me down. "Don't worry, I'm not trying to get out of paying. As soon as my husband gets here, I'll have him pay."

I explained patiently to the staff.

Kelly wasn't about to let things go and turned to the staff again. "I remember Millia was pretty light-fingered back in high school. Maybe you should check if anything's missing?"

The staff immediately caught on and waved for security. "Search her. Make sure she doesn't take anything with her. Otherwise, it's coming out of our paycheck."

"At the time, I actually thought it was kind of fun and interesting, so I played along. I never expected Millia would be so easy."After that, all I could hear was their laughter. When I first heard that recording, I felt a chill down my spine. But now, after so much time had passed, I was completely over it, regardless of whether it was all a misunderstanding or not. After so much disappointment, I stopped loving Ivan a long time ago.Our story was nothing more than a classic fairy tale. A rich boy falling for a hardworking, poor girl. Everything between us that summer was just like a midsummer night's dream. Beautiful but fleeting.I still remember those summer nights by the lake, fireflies drifting through the humid air, a boy and a girl leaning against each other. "Millia, don't worry. There will be a way to help your mom with her sickness. You just focus on your studies. Leave the rest to me. I'll always protect you."The girl, eyes swollen from crying, had just nodded quiet

Alex focused and probed his memory for anything about Kelly."Darn… I remember now. Do you remember the first time we met? The night you almost got hit by that car after work? I had someone look into it. The car was registered to Kelly's cousin. I saw Kelly's photo in the file my personal assistant gave me."Alex's words pulled me back to three years ago. That was the day I broke up with Ivan. I had just started working at Alex's company, and that night, a speeding car had nearly hit me as I was walking home.At the time, I had thought it was just an accident, but after he saw that I had merely gotten knocked down, the driver had actually reversed and nearly run me over again. If Alex hadn't shown up when he did, I might not have survived that night. As luck would have it, all the security cameras on that street were out, and the driver was never found. Kelly's cousin had claimed the car had been stolen. With no evidence, the whole thing had been swept under the carpet. But now,

The sound of sirens grew louder as the police arrived. The staff, now in tears, panicked and looked at Kelly. She was going to do a Hail Mary. "It was Kelly! She started all the rumors! She's the one who hinted at everything, and she was the first to slander Mrs. Ward in public! She said Mrs. Ward was trying to sleep her way to the top! She's the one who started the rumors!"Kelly's face turned dark instantly. She shot the staff a look that could kill. "You're lying! You're the one who looked down on others for dressing casually, calling them a fake, and trying to charge them for the free desserts. Who knows how many times you've pulled this scam?"The staff looked guilty, as if Kelly had gotten it right, but her eyes turned vicious as she stared at Kelly and retorted, "There are security cameras in the lobby. We can check the footage."Kelly suddenly fell silent. She had forgotten about the cameras. That was when the police walked in."Hello, who called the police?"I explained

All the other business owners around us in the lounge looked like they wished they could disappear, terrified that Alex might take his anger out on them. If they had known how things would turn out, they never would have gotten involved in the first place. One by one, they shrank back, barely daring to breathe.I nestled into Alex's arms, glancing at his sharp jaw, and I couldn't help but feel a surge of warmth inside. Thank goodness he was here to protect me. Mom, you can rest easy now. There was now someone protecting me in your stead. My nose stung, and tears nearly spilled over. I choked up as I said, "I forgot my phone. I just didn't want to make things harder for you by exposing that I'm Mrs. Ward."Alex looked down and met my eyes. The endless gentleness in his gaze completely unraveled me. The tears wouldn't stop, no matter how many times I tried to wipe them away.Alex used his thumb to gently brush away my tears, his voice soft and reassuring. "Milly, I'm not upset with

"Honey," I called out to Alex without even thinking.Everyone's attention in the room turned to Alex, people staring in shock, glancing between the two of us like they couldn't believe what they were seeing."Mr. Ward, is Millia really your wife? She used to be a student my family sponsored. How could you two possibly know each other?" Ivan asked, sounding completely stunned.Kelly clutched her sleeve so tightly her perfect smile nearly fell apart.Alex didn't give Ivan so much as a glance. He walked straight over, pulled me into his arms, and asked gently, "Did they give you a hard time?"For some reason, what felt like just a minor annoyance before now made my nose sting and my eyes go red."Mr. Ward, is she really your wife? I never heard anything about you being married.""Since when do I need your permission to get married?" Alex Ward's warmth was gone, his words now sharp.Ivan looked like he had just heard some world-shattering secret. His eyes were red as he stepped bac

As that figure came closer, I finally saw his face. It was indeed my husband, Alex. If he saw me caught up in a scene with my ex-boyfriend, he would definitely get jealous all over again.I quickly shook off Ivan's hand.Thud.Something fell out of my pocket. It was a rough, unpolished diamond, its outer layer still dark and dull."I thought you looked down on this stone, Millia. Why are you still carrying it after all these years?" Ivan asked, his voice sharp. "You're really going all out to get my attention, aren't you? Let me be clear. I'll never get back together with you. Take the money and just leave. Stop playing games."He actually believed I had broken up with him just because of that Valentine's Day gift. The cracks had appeared when I was hospitalized with gastritis and had called him, only to find out he was out shopping with Kelly. When he had made me drink dirty water through deception just to make Kelly laugh. When he had gotten drunk over Kelly going abroad and h
