Chapter 4

Ginger
The Alderton Family agreed to the marriage without hesitation.

Two powerful Families joining forces meant both sides would expand their influence exponentially. This marriage was nothing but advantageous.

That night, scrolling through my phone out of boredom, I stumbled on a post from Lawrence.

"Three-day countdown. As long as she kneels before me, apologizes, and writes her apology letter, I'll forgive her."

Most of the comments tore into him for treating his girlfriend like she wasn't human.

A few agreed with him:

"Show her who's boss. Women need to know they're accessories."

"Exactly. After all these years together, she can't live without you. Do whatever you want."

Anna's comment was right there too. She was the first to cheer him on. "Babe, you could break up with her a hundred times and she'd never leave. Come meet me at the bar. This is your last night of freedom."

I felt nothing. I kept scrolling.

Lawrence's reply brimmed with confidence.

"Of course she won't leave me. We already filed our marriage license application. She has no way out. Once my birthday's over, we'll get married right away. Then she'll never be able to run."

His stupidity made me laugh. I was tempted to tell him that the waiting period started from the day the application was filed, not the day after.

His timeline was already wrong.

From the day we got together, marrying him was the one thing I wanted most. I'd fantasized about our happy married life more times than I could count.

But Lawrence treated marrying me like charity he was handing down. He didn't deserve it.

Over the next three days, we remained broken up. He didn't reach out.

Not until the morning I was due to file for the marriage license. That was when Lawrence's call dragged me out of a dead sleep.

"Camilla, don't forget my birthday party at noon today. And the gift you promised me."

Before I could say a word, he hung up. A moment later, the doorbell rang in a crisp rhythm.

I padded to the door in my nightgown and opened it. Adam stood there holding a bouquet of white roses, a composed smile on his face. "Miss Ferrante, I'm here to pick you up."

He looked much the way I'd imagined: sharp, chiseled features, yet with warmth in his eyes, wearing a perfectly tailored suit and neatly styled hair.

I took the flowers, hurried back to my room, changed, and put on light makeup.

He waited by the car with impeccable manners, and when I came out, he gave a slight bow and opened the door for me.

"Miss Ferrante, are you sure you want to marry me?"

I nodded without hesitation and got in. As the door closed, I caught a smile spreading across Adam's face, one that reached his eyes.

He chose a jurisdiction with no waiting period for our registration. By the time we walked out of city hall, we were husband and wife.

"Hungry? Want to grab lunch?" I thought about it, then gave him an address.

When Adam and I walked into the restaurant, Lawrence was at the center of a cheering crowd.

The moment he saw me, he smirked and walked over, stopping in front of me with his hand out.

"I knew you'd come, but you're late. That'll be a ten-page apology, or I'm breaking up with you. And where's my gift?"

I looked at him coldly and pulled my marriage certificate with Adam out of my bag. Thinking I was reaching for a gift, he whistled to his friends behind him and raised his eyebrows smugly.

"This is my gift to you."

Lawrence stared at the marriage certificate in my hands. His smile froze on his face. "You got married? To who?"

"What?"Lawrence and I said it at the same time. Adam rubbed his forehead with a weary sigh. "Why else do you think I agreed to marry you so easily? With my position, politicians and powerbrokers are lining up to marry their daughters off to me. Why would I choose you? You really never wondered?"He was talking to me, but Lawrence was the one who crumbled. He sank to the ground like every bone in his body had dissolved, crying and laughing at the same time."So that's how it is... The woman you've loved all along was Camilla... I'm such a fool. A woman like you would have countless admirers, and you chose me of all people. And I threw you away." He rambled between slaps to his own face, one after another, like a man who'd completely lost it.Adam stepped in front of me, his gun trained on Lawrence. "You've caused enough damage to my life with Camilla. Breaking into the Alderton estate? That crosses a line. Once I deal with you, our lives can go back to normal."His finger tightened on

Lawrence stood there with his mouth half open, speechless. After a long silence, he slowly sank to his knees and pulled a few crumpled pages from his pocket."Camilla, this is my apology letter. Please forgive me. I know I was wrong! I'm on my knees. Whatever conditions you set, I'll agree to all of them. Just come back to me, please?""No. We're never going back.""Yes we can! You can divorce Adam, and we'll get married right away. I don't want to wait a single day. Please, I'm begging you!" Lawrence's voice had a desperation I'd never heard from him before. He'd thrown away every shred of his pride, kneeling at my feet just to earn my forgiveness.I saw a reflection of my former self in him. It was equal parts pathetic and pitiful."We're done for good. I've told you so many times, we're over! I will never marry you!"But Lawrence stayed stubbornly on his knees, his hands clutching the hem of my skirt in a death grip until a dark voice sounded behind me.It was Adam. "Lawrence, I alr

I rolled over comfortably in bed and realized I'd slept all the way until noon.I washed up and headed downstairs. The maid greeted me with a smile. "Ma'am, it's lunchtime. What would you like to eat?"I was actually hungry. I thought about it and listed a few dishes. "Oh, and a coffee. Milk, no sugar."The maid smiled and brought a cup from the table. "Mr. Alderton already made your coffee. Milk, no sugar."That caught me off guard. How did he know how I took my coffee? Then I figured my parents had probably told him.But after I'd listed what I wanted to eat, the maid didn't leave. She just stood beside me, smiling.I couldn't help asking, "Is the chef already cooking?"The maid shook her head. "Mr. Alderton gave the chef the day off. He's making your lunch himself, and it's exactly what you just asked for. He truly cares about you, ma'am. You're very lucky."Adam, a Don who answered to no one, was cooking my lunch himself?I walked into the kitchen and found him dropping butter into

Lawrence didn't sleep at all that night. He couldn't wrap his head around it. How could Camilla, who had worshipped him like a god, be the princess of the Ferrante Family? How could she have married someone else? He'd never seen her look so cold, so dismissive. In his mind, Camilla only knew how to hang her head and apologize. As much as he refused to admit it, it seemed his Camilla had left him for good. The more he thought about it, the more he panicked. He called Camilla. But the call wouldn't go through. She'd blocked him. Then it hit him. Three days ago, after breaking up with her, he had blocked her first. He started firing off message after message, from every account he had. Every single one came back with that same red exclamation mark. Finally, the fear set in. A terror unlike anything he'd ever felt gripped him, his chest constricting while his heart hammered uncontrollably. His mind was a mess. He tried to piece together everything that had happened, but none of it made sen

Lawrence practically crawled out of the restaurant.Adam pulled out my chair, spread a napkin across my lap, and waved over the waiter to pour my wine. "I'm sorry. I kissed you on impulse earlier. I owe you an apology."I blinked, then looked up at him. "No, you don't have to apologize. You're my husband."I couldn't say I loved this man I'd only met once, but this was the path I'd chosen. My father had chosen him for me. I trusted his judgment, and I intended to be a good wife.A relaxed smile broke across Adam's face. He cut my steak for me, then raised his glass. "That makes me happy to hear. Now that we're married, I want you to come to me with anything. Like that guy just now. If you want him dead, just say the word.""Doesn't it bother you? That I'm still tangled up with my ex?"Adam shook his head. "No. All I feel is sorry that you had to deal with all of this alone, and angry at myself for not being there two years sooner. Don't let someone like that ruin the mood. Come on. Let

He glanced at Adam beside me, then back at me, and scoffed. "Camilla, you think you can grab some random guy off the street and I'll fall for it?"He looked back at his friends, then ordered me, "Go pay my tab right now, then come with me to the registrar's office. Otherwise, we're done."I instinctively looked for Adam, but he was gone. Panic washed over me. Had he seen me tangled up with my ex and gotten upset?Just as I was at a loss, Adam reappeared with the restaurant manager. He stood beside me and gently draped his arm around my shoulders. Such a simple gesture, yet it gave me more courage than I'd ever had.The manager approached Lawrence, his expression distant, barely maintaining a professional smile. "Sir, Mr. Alderton has reserved the entire restaurant. I'll have to ask you to dine elsewhere. Also, your bill today comes to twenty-five hundred dollars. Will that be card or cash?"Lawrence exploded. "Reserved the whole place? I was here first! You're throwing me out? Just wat
