Day 89.

I wrote it at the top of a clean page, underlined it twice, and stared at it until the ink dried.

It was barely dawn. I was sitting on the edge of a narrow bed in the old nursery, in a nightdress that was one size too thin for the cold, with a peacock chick curled up in the hollow of my knees and a notebook balanced on my lap. Nora's notebook. The one that had ended three days before with the words, I hope the snake finds me.

I had torn out that page and burned it in the washstand. Nobo

Day 89.I wrote it at the top of a clean page, underlined it twice, and stared at it until the ink dried. It was barely dawn. I was sitting on the edge of a narrow bed in the old nursery, in a nightdress that was one size too thin for the cold, with a peacock chick curled up in the hollow of my knees and a notebook balanced on my lap. Nora's notebook. The one that had ended three days before with the words, I hope the snake finds me.I had torn out that page and burned it in the washstand. Nobody was going to hope for a snake in this room.Under Day 89, I wrote a list.SHELTER. Somewhere high, dry and hidden, with a water source.FOOD. Enough to feed a hundred people for a year.WATER. Clean. Filtered. Stored.MEDICINE. Anything Molly's family can brew.PEOPLE. The ones who will not abandon us.BEAST CORES. Currency, fuel, weapons.THE ARK. Find out who is really on the list.I looked at it for a long time.In my book, the Flood was a single, huge, spectacular set piece. Forty thousan

  • After transmigrating into the flood apocalypse   Chapter 5: The Pawn Ticket

I had written eighty-seven chapters of The Great flood apocalypse, and in none of them had a peacock ever spoken to anyone. "You are not Nora," the chick said again, in the narrow side chamber where Elder Hugh had dragged me away from the staring crowd. "Her soul is gone. I felt it leave. Who are you?" I sat down heavily on a stone bench with the chick cupped in my hands. My heart was pounding. I should say that, before this, I had managed to watch Daisy's choosing. It had been the last thing I saw before the elder hauled me out by the elbow, and I had seen it with only half my mind, but I would remember it for the rest of my life. When the crystal had gone white, the whole hall had turned to stare at me, and Daisy had stepped forward for her own turn, pale with fury. And a small black snake with a bandaged tail had slid out of its basket in the third row, flowed across the marble in a glossy ribbon, passed straight by Daisy's feet, and then, with perfect clarity, turned around

  • After transmigrating into the flood apocalypse   Chapter 4: Wells, You May Choose

"Wells. You may choose."I knew those words. I knew them because I had typed them myself, at two o'clock in the morning, in a different life though… I never expected to hear them out loud. The Temple of the Hundred Cradles was exactly as I had described it. Gold light poured through high windows. Pillars rose in rows, carved with vines and wings. Overhead, a vaulted ceiling was painted with tamers and beasts standing side by side, and a hundred young people in white ceremonial robes shuffled and whispered below it. I could smell incense, warm stone and straw, and under it all, the wild, musky heat of a hundred animals waiting to be chosen.I had spent three whole paragraphs on that ceiling. It had never occurred to me that it would be so high."Wells," said the old examiner again, with an impatient rustle of his scroll. "Do try to keep up, girl. We choose in order of rank, lowest first. You are lowest. That is why you are first. We have not got all day."Somebody giggled. It was a sof

"Is she dead?""Don't be rude. She's breathing.""She was breathing yesterday too, look how that ended.""I think she’s waking up."I opened my eyes slowly, and found myself looking at a ceiling I did not recognize, and then at a very small round and fluffy puppy. The puppy was sitting on my chest. It was golden and white, no bigger than a loaf of bread, with enormous, serious brown eyes. It looked at me, tilted its head, and said, in a voice like a tiny, anxious aunt, "You look terrible."I screamed. The puppy yelped and tumbled backward off my chest. Something behind it squawked. Something else hissed. I sat bolt upright in a narrow wooden bed, my heart hammering, and the whole room came into focus at once.It was a small room with a slanted ceiling, painted a pale, chalky blue. There was a washstand, a wooden wardrobe, a round window that let in a stripe of morning light. And on every flat surface, there were animals. There was a grey kitten on the windowsill. A fat green lizard on

  • After transmigrating into the flood apocalypse   Chapter 2: Comments

"Nora can't die!!!""Author, I am not okay."The comments came in faster than I could read them.My name is Nora Brooks, and I am a bestselling author of fourteen novels and one very ill-advised cooking blog. At five o'clock in the morning, I was sitting at my desk with a laptop on my knees, a cold cup of tea at my elbow, and my heart doing something strange in my chest. I had just posted chapter eighty-seven of my newest novel, The Great flood apocalypse. The chapter ended with my heroine drowning. The notifications went off like popcorn."You killed her?? After everything she did for that snake???"“Snakes will always be snake… deceptive and betrayers!” Another comment came.“Gosh, she was so stupid… she deserves it.”I had never seen so many exclamation marks in my life. I scrolled, and they kept coming. The views counter was climbing too. Four thousand. Nine thousand. Eleven. By the time I finished my first sip of cold tea, the chapter had been shared in three reader groups, and s

  • After transmigrating into the flood apocalypse   Chapter 1: The Ark Does Not Open for the Weak

Jax closed his hand around my wrist, and I understood that I was about to be thrown away. "Not leave," he said gently. "But Transfer." I had never heard that word used about a person. It sounded like something you did with a bag of coins. The bond tore. It felt like a hook pulled out from behind my ribs, dragging something warm out of my chest. For ninety days, a silver thread had lived there, and every morning I had woken to it humming like a small, steady heartbeat. It went taut and thin… before it snapped, I screamed and went down on one knee in the freezing sea. All around the last terrace of the Dragon Spire, the world was ending. The Flood had come to the mountains. The Imperial Palace was a drowned crown. The great beast markets, the Academy towers, the golden temples of the Hundred Cradles, all of it lay beneath a grey, heaving ocean that stretched from one horizon to the other. Only the highest peaks were left, and the water was climbing them. Long, pale shapes slid ben
