At exactly 8:08 PM, I arrived at the rotating restaurant as planned.

Kieran said he wanted to have dinner with me to make it up to me. I agreed, after all, I had loved him for so many years, and I wanted to say goodbye to him properly.

Outside the window, a magnificent fireworks display began on the building across from us, painting the night sky in brilliant colors. The show lasted two full hours.

But the person who had asked me to dinner never came.

Kieran called. "Aria, I have an emergency at Winters Pack. I need to leave immediately—I can't make dinner. But I've already ordered all your favorite dishes. Take your time eating, and I promise I'll make it up to you when I get back."

The lights outside became blindingly harsh. I managed a single word in response: "Okay."

That "okay" came out with a slight sob, making Kieran's heart sink inexplicably. For a moment, he felt a strange panic.

But the woman lying seductively on the bed in front of him, her expression teasing and inviting, made it impossible for him to turn away.

I randomly opened my phone. Social media was flooded with posts about the spectacular light show.

"I heard some big shot wanted to make his girlfriend happy, so he booked the exterior screens of several buildings six months in advance and designed a custom light show just so his mate could see it on her birthday. So romantic!"

The most eye-catching post was from Scarlett's social media:

"Fireworks are fleeting, but love is eternal."

Scarlett's birthday was only one day after mine. My birthday had been celebrated with a lonely bowl of noodles, while hers got the entire city's grand celebration. Even the compensatory gestures meant for me were absent—all the supposed romance belonged to someone else.

I liked her post, using every muscle in my body to keep my tears from falling.

The restaurant was closing. A server asked if I needed anything else before the kitchen closed. I declined, paid the bill, and left, abandoning a table full of untouched delicacies.

The next day, I received a call from the Alpha Council. They confirmed once more whether I was certain about renouncing my Shadow Pack membership and severing my mate bond with the Alpha.

After I gave them a definitive yes, they fell silent for a long moment. "I've handled countless mate bond dissolutions, Miss Rivers. You're the most resolute I've ever encountered."

I smiled and hung up.

I had mated with Kieran because of love. Now that the love was gone, nothing else mattered.

I was determined to sever every connection between Kieran and myself completely.

---

That afternoon, he came home early to pick me up for his beta assistant's mating ceremony.

Seeing everything at home exactly as usual, with nothing missing and me behaving normally, he laughed at his own paranoia.

At the party, Kieran shielded me from unwanted drinks, worried I might be cold and thoughtfully brought me a shawl, and tirelessly fetched my favorite foods and beverages.

He introduced me to everyone like I was a priceless treasure.

Surrounded by guests, he spoke of love with such passion that he was certain I could feel his devotion.

Everyone joked that the beta's mating bond should follow the Alpha's example.

Kieran beamed. "Don't worry, Aria and I will definitely set a good example."

I laughed coldly inside. Between us, there was only separation ahead—how could we possibly be an example for anyone else's relationship?

When the party ended, Kieran's friends tried to drag him to continue the night elsewhere. Remembering how little time he'd spent with me lately, Kieran refused directly.

"I'd love to drink with you all, but I'd rather spend time with my mate."

Not wanting to spoil everyone's fun, I told Kieran, "Go ahead. You haven't hung out with your friends in ages. I can take a taxi home."

Kieran shook his head. "Nothing is more important than being with you."

He took my hand and led me out of the banquet hall, completely ignoring his friends' pleas behind us.

Halfway home, Kieran's phone rang. He connected his Bluetooth earpiece, so I couldn't hear the other side of the conversation.

I watched his expression turn dark in an instant. "Send me the address. Stall them—I'll be right there."

He made an emergency U-turn and pulled over sharply. "Adrian's been attacked by rogue wolves. The scene's too chaotic—I'm afraid you'll get hurt. Can you get home by yourself?"

He didn't even notice that my leg had been cut by silver fragments on the roadside. Before I could steady myself, Kieran gunned the engine and sped away. I had tried to lean against the car door for support, but when the car suddenly accelerated, I lost my balance and fell.

The banquet ended abruptly. I locked myself in my room for many days, my mind spinning with everything that had happened.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Sebastian's face when he told me about that summer ten years ago. The boy who had truly saved me. The boy whose story Kieran had stolen.I knew that in this lifetime, I still owed Kieran a debt. But I also knew I could never repay it by sacrificing my own happiness. That evening, Sebastian came to take me to dinner. His gentle knock on my door made my heart skip."Evelyn, are you ready?"I opened the door to find him holding a bouquet of white roses. Not the red ones Kieran used to bring, but pure white ones that somehow felt more honest."You look beautiful," Sebastian said softly.I felt my cheeks warm. "You don't have to say that every time you see me.""I'm not saying it because I have to. I'm saying it because it's true."Before I could respond, Uncle Marcus appeared at the end of the hallway. His expression was dark and deter

The moment the door swung open, people rushed in like a flood. Some even held phones ready to record.I recognized several faces—Isabella's friends, some pack gossips, and a few people I didn't know but who clearly had cameras ready.Seeing the clothes scattered across the floor and the man lying with his back toward them, Isabella stepped forward with theatrical outrage."Evelyn!" she gasped, pointing at me accusingly. "I know you've grown wild living abroad, but this is home! Don't you know you need to protect your reputation?"Her voice carried just the right amount of shock and concern to sound convincing to outsiders."If Grandfather saw you like this, he'd faint from shock!"I laughed coldly inside. Such an elaborate production. Knowing she'd failed to have me killed, she wanted to destroy me socially instead."Sister," I said carefully, "this isn't what it looks like—""Isn't what it looks like?" Isabella's voice rose dramatically. "There are clothes everywhere! There's a man in

I was already in tears, my voice breaking as I spoke. "So you just watched from afar like that, holding onto a hope with almost no chance, wasting ten years of your life?"Sebastian reached out to cup my face gently, his thumb brushing away the tears streaming down my cheeks."Wasting?" Sebastian smiled, but his eyes held unprecedented determination. "Have you ever heard this saying? When a young man's heart stirs once, it stirs forever."His voice was soft but firm, each word carrying the weight of years."You're the mate the Moon Goddess chose for me. If it's not you, it won't be anyone else."I felt my breath catch. The intensity in his eyes was overwhelming."Sebastian, you could have had anyone. You're powerful, handsome, from the strongest pack. Any she-wolf would have been honored to be with you.""But I didn't want anyone else," he said simply. "For me, not a single second was wasted. Being able to stand here now and tell you I love you—that's the best reward these ten years co

With tears streaming down my face, I stared at Sebastian's earnest expression. My voice was barely a whisper."What you just said—is it all true?"Sebastian's eyes never left mine as he nodded slowly."Every word. I started loving you many, many years ago."He took a deep breath, as if preparing to bare his soul completely."That summer, I was twenty-two. You were my nephew's combat training instructor."I felt my breath catch. A distant memory flickered at the edge of my consciousness."Before you came along, my nephew had driven away five previous teachers," Sebastian continued, a slight smile touching his lips. "He was impossible. Spoiled, arrogant, refused to listen to anyone.""But with you..." Sebastian's voice grew soft with memory. "With you, everything changed. He adored you. Wouldn't let anyone say a single negative word about his instructor."My heart began to race as pieces of a forgotten puzzle started falling into place."I became curious," Sebastian admitted. "What kind

Kieran didn't know how he managed to walk out of that room. His legs felt like lead, each step a monumental effort. The man from ten years ago—it really had been Sebastian Cross. The truth crashed over him like a tidal wave, threatening to drown him in guilt and regret. He stumbled down the hotel corridor, his mind reeling with memories he'd tried so hard to bury. That day ten years ago played out in vivid detail behind his eyes.Back then, he'd seen me isolated from the group, struck in the head by a blood-crazed rogue wolf and knocked unconscious. Blood had been streaming down my face, and I'd looked so small and helpless lying there.A man with a similar build to his had rushed forward without hesitation. Kieran could still see it clearly now—the way the stranger had thrown himself between me and the silver blade, using his own chest to absorb the deadly blow.Even as the medical team carried him away on a stretcher, the wounded man had kept begging the healers to treat me first."P

In an instant, Sebastian's face flushed red all the way to his ears. He greedily kissed my soft lips but stopped before going any further. He couldn't take advantage of someone in distress.Just then, the doorbell rang—the doctor he'd called had arrived. The doctor administered a sedative, and I fell into deep sleep.Sebastian knelt beside the bed, gently tucking my scattered hair behind my ears.He reached out, tracing the outline of my face in the air. After all these years, this face still made his heart race.Remembering that kiss, Sebastian unconsciously touched his own lips, smiling foolishly to himself. My phone rang. It was Alpha Winters.Sebastian, worried it might be urgent, answered the call."Evelyn, where are you? Did something happen?"Sebastian replied awkwardly, "Uncle, Evelyn had too much to drink and is resting at a hotel now.""Don't worry, I'll take good care of her."Alpha Winters exhaled in relief. Heaven knew how worried he'd been when he saw the message I'd sent
