I hoped I had heard wrong. After my footsteps left the inn, a Beta with all black clothes on his body approached the reception where I was.

I turned my face back, to confirm my astonishment. And that Beta, smiled at me. The jet-black hat he wore blocked out the light, so I could only see his lips.

"I paid for this inn for you," he said. With us so far apart, his voice sounded very thin. But I knew he was talking to me.

"Who are you?" I asked. Suspicious? Naturally. If he knew I had come to rent the inn, then he had been observing my movements secretly.

"Your baby. He seems to be cold. Don't you two need a cozy place to rest?" Rather than answering my suspicions, the Beta man distracted me by pointing at the baby squirming uncomfortably in my arms.
