The training fields were quiet. Most of the academy had cleared out in preparation for the Trial—eating, resting, psyching themselves up. But Lucian knew where Valen would be.

By the cliffs. The overlook behind the old observatory. The only place one could be completely alone.

And sure enough, there Valen was.

Rayne stood at the edge of the ledge, eyes cast out toward the endless stretch of trees that would soon become her battleground. Her arms were crossed tightly over her chest, her shoulders hunched against the chill wind.

She didn’t turn when he approached.

“What do you want, Lucian?.”

Lucian stopped beside her, silent for a long beat. Then:

“I asked Rhys to let me go with you.”

That made her look at him—sharply, searchingly.

“You what?”

“I told him I wanted to be your partner for the Trial.”

Rayne blinked, stunned. “Why would you—?”

“Because you’re not ready,” Lucian said, brutally honest. “Not for this. No one is, not alone. But especially not someone who just started new here.

The world returned in fragments.Pain first. Then cold. Then the muffled rush of blood in her ears, louder than any sound around her.Rayne’s eyelashes fluttered, sticky with sweat and grime. The sharp scent of copper filled her nose—blood, thick and metallic—and for a moment, she couldn’t remember where she was. Only that everything hurt. Her side throbbed, her leg felt like it had been caught under a boulder, and her throat was dry and raw.She blinked slowly, vision unfocused.Above her, thick branches spread like skeletal arms, moonlight slipping through like a silver veil. She was lying on something soft—moss, maybe—or a cloak. A rough one. The air was damp, heavy with the aftermath of the Trial’s magic. But it wasn’t the infirmary. This was still the forest. She was still in the forest.Rayne shot upright with a strangled gasp.Or tried to.Agony shot through her torso and she collapsed with a grunt, the pain forcing black spots to dance across her eyes. Her chest ached—bandaged

  • Alpha's Hidden Luna   Chapter Twenty Nine: What Lies Beneath

The forest groaned like a living creature as the Trial of Shadows pushed deeper into its cruel heart.Rayne had survived the first beast. That should’ve been the worst of it.But the forest had other plans. She and Lucian had been navigating through twisting paths and silent traps for what felt like hours. The forest floor shifted subtly beneath their feet, as if the earth itself didn’t want them there. The shadows whispered—not voices, but memories. And illusions.Rayne could feel herself slipping. Her ribs were cracked from the earlier fight. Her legs ached. Her hands had blistered from gripping her blade too tightly. The blood drying on her arms wasn’t all the beast’s.She hadn’t told Lucian how badly she was hurt. She didn’t want him to see her weak. Not now. Not ever. Not when she was already a fraud among Alphas.Lucian, ever alert, moved ahead of her, his steps calculated. He barely made a sound despite his size. She hated how effortlessly powerful he looked—even bloodied and b

The sky was gray by the time the infirmary doors finally creaked open.Rayne shot to her feet so fast the world tilted. Lucian’s hand instinctively reached out, steadying her by the elbow, but she barely noticed.A medical staff—with silver hair and specks of blood still staining his gloves—stepped out with a tight expression.“He’s stable,” she said. “Conscious. Awake.”Rayne exhaled a sharp, shuddering breath, almost collapsing from the relief.“Can I see him?”The medical staff hesitated, then nodded once. “A few minutes. He’s weak and in pain. Don’t agitate him.”Rayne didn’t need to be told twice. She slipped inside like a shadow, the heavy door thudding shut behind her.The infirmary smelled like antiseptic and steel, cold and sterile. But when she turned the corner and saw Jace lying there—propped up on a low bed, bandages wrapped tightly around his shoulder and back—her breath caught in her throat. He looked pale. Sweaty. Exhausted. But his eyes were open.“Valen?” His voice w

Rayne's arms ached. Her legs trembled with each step as she pushed through the forest path, Jace’s unconscious weight slung across her shoulders. She had no idea how long she’d been carrying him—minutes? Hours? It all blurred together in a haze of adrenaline and desperation. His blood had stained the front of her shirt. Warm and sticky, seeping through the fabric like guilt itself.“Hang on, Jace,” she murmured through gritted teeth. “We’re almost there. Just a little more.”The edge of the trees gave way to the southern path behind the training hall, and up ahead—blessedly—the spires of the academy came into view. Students moved in clusters across the courtyard, heads turning toward her as the sight of a bloodied Alpha on another’s back shattered the peaceful morning lull.Gasps erupted.Someone shouted. And then they came running.Rayne didn’t have time to explain. Her boots hit the stone steps with a thud, knees buckling beneath Jace’s weight as she finally stumbled forward.“Help

  • Alpha's Hidden Luna   Chapter Twenty Five: The Fall Before The Fight

The morning sun barely pierced the heavy canopy of the woods that circled Blackmoon’s Alpha Academy training grounds. Mist clung low to the ground, wrapping the roots and fallen leaves in a thin shroud, like the forest itself was holding its breath.Rayne stood still for a moment, adjusting the wraps on her wrists as she listened to the quiet. This wasn’t one of the official training zones. She and Jace had come here on their own—tucked deep into the forest where no instructors would interrupt them. Where no curious eyes would watch. It was the closest thing to privacy the academy allowed.Jace had insisted they train away from everyone. He’d said he wanted focus. Clarity. But she knew better. He wanted her alone. And she didn't really mind. She wanted things to get back as it used to between them.Rayne exhaled and turned as Jace emerged from between the trees, carrying two carved practice blades. He tossed one to her, and she caught it easily, the weight familiar in her hand.“Ready
