One month ago.

Victoria called Marcus in tears, begging him to help care for her sick pet dog. Without hesitation, Marcus abandoned me to rush to Victoria's aid.

After he left, I encountered his enemy—rogue wolves from the eastern territories. That's when I discovered I was pregnant. My wolf had gone dormant to protect the growing life inside me.

I couldn't shift to defend myself. I could only desperately reach out through our mind link, calling for Marcus again and again.

Nine times I called. Nine times he ignored me.

On the tenth attempt, he finally responded with irritation: "Enough already. If you're going to fake emergencies for attention, at least know when to stop."

Then he completely blocked our mind link.

The rogues cornered me in the abandoned warehouse district. Their leader's claws raked across my stomach as I tried to protect my unborn pup . I felt the warm blood soaking through my shirt as darkness claimed me.

When I woke up in the healing clinic, the pack healer looked at me with sad eyes.

"I'm sorry, Luna. We couldn't save the baby."

The moment I learned our pup was gone, something inside me shattered completely.

I thought: it's time to end this.

**Back in the present.**

In our living room, Marcus stood with his back to me, gripping his bourbon glass so tightly his knuckles turned white.

He didn't ask why I hadn't contacted him that night.

He knew exactly why. He knew I had tried countless times to reach him through our mind link.

"It's probably for the best anyway," Marcus said without turning around. "You were never much of a mother to begin with."

He walked toward his study and shut the door with practiced ease.

Twelve years of being mated. Countless fights and arguments.

I was always the one who apologized first. Always the one who crawled back, begging for forgiveness.

But this time, Marcus waited in vain for my usual plea for reconciliation.

Thirty minutes later, he opened the study door and searched our enormous house. He couldn't find me anywhere.

I was already gone.

---

**How it all began.**

We discovered we were fated mates right after we both came of age and first shifted. The entire northern territory disapproved of our union. After all, Marcus was the Alpha of Shadowmoon Pack and heir to the Alpha King throne—the most noble wolf in all the northern lands.

I was just a commoner. Worse, my father was a convicted criminal.

But Marcus fell in love with me anyway. He pursued me with relentless determination.

Our first meeting wasn't romantic. I had just joined the pack's hunting squad as a bottom-tier soldier, assigned the dirtiest job of collecting and cleaning the kills. That day, torrential rain caused a mudslide that scattered our hunting party. I was ordered to search for missing pack members.

I found Marcus unconscious, half-buried in mud and debris.

I dragged him to a dry cave and used wild healing herbs to treat his wounds. When he woke up, his wolf immediately recognized me as his mate.

After learning I had saved his life, he followed me around like a lovesick puppy.

He would wait at my assignment locations, trailing behind me no matter how many times I told him to leave.

He bought me expensive designer dresses. I tore them to shreds and threw them back at him.

He spent ten million dollars at auction for a rare healing crystal, made me ridiculously expensive lunches with his own hands. I gave everything to my injured hunting squad teammates.

My friends all laughed, saying I'd caught myself a wealthy, devoted Alpha.

Anyone could see we came from completely different worlds.

But this same man burst into my safe house when my criminal father stabbed me with a silver dagger. Marcus didn't care about the blood covering me—he gathered my dying body in his arms and summoned the pack's best healer.

While the healer worked on my wounds, Marcus stood with his back to us. His shoulders shook uncontrollably, and he kept wiping his face with the back of his hand.

The healer asked him, half-exasperated and half-amused, why he was crying when he wasn't the one who got hurt.

"I don't know why," Marcus said. "But seeing her injured makes my chest feel like it's being torn apart."

In the medical ward, Marcus clumsily peeled an apple for me.

"I never want to feel this helpless again. Sage, promise me you won't get hurt anymore. I'm begging you."

I ate the ice cream he bought me, mumbling "okay" around the cold sweetness. Then I glared at him fiercely:

"So are you going to mark me or not?"

We both turned red-faced that entire day, too embarrassed to speak.

I had told Marcus a secret no one else knew. My mother was actually murdered by my father on purpose.

Dad knew Mom was severely allergic to Moonlight herb, but he forced liquid silver down five-year-old me's throat. Only Moonlight herb could cure silver poisoning in werewolves.

To save me, Mom desperately searched for the herb despite knowing it would kill her. She held on just long enough to feed me the antidote before her severe allergic reaction claimed her life.

From that day on, I hated my father, hated myself, and hated Moonlight herb.

"So if you ever want to break up with me," I told eighteen-year-old Marcus, "you don't need to say it directly. Just send me Moonlight herb."

"Don't be stupid," he said, holding me tight. "We'll be together forever."

The eighteen-year-old boy wrapped his arms around me, refusing to let me say another foolish word.

I should have known that forever was just another lie.

The pasta was taking longer than it should. A burning smell began to fill the kitchen, but Marcus seemed oblivious."The pot," I said quietly. He looked down in panic, quickly lifting the pan. The bottom was completely burned, the sauce a bitter, blackened mess."I can start over," he said frantically. "Give me five minutes—""Marcus, stop."But he was already dumping the ruined pasta into a bowl, his movements jerky and desperate."It's fine, it's still good. Try it."He set the bowl in front of me with shaking hands. The smell alone was enough to turn my stomach.I took a small bite to humor him. It was absolutely terrible—bitter, burned, underseasoned."How is it?" His eyes searched my face desperately."It's..." I couldn't bring myself to lie. "It's not good, Marcus."His face crumpled. He grabbed a spoon and tasted it himself, immediately wincing."I don't understand. I followed the same recipe. I used to make this perfectly.""That was twelve years ago.""I can try again. Let me

After we finished eating, Logan wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and looked at me with hopeful eyes."Mom, can you pick me up again next week?"His voice was small but determined. I could see the longing in his expression—the same way I used to look at Marcus years ago.I smiled as I helped him put on his safety helmet, adjusting the strap under his chin."If you want me to, of course I will.""Really? You promise?""I promise, sweetheart."Logan's face lit up like Christmas morning. He threw his small arms around my waist and squeezed tight."I love you, Mom. You're the coolest mom ever."My heart swelled with genuine happiness. This was what I had been missing all these years—simple, pure love without conditions or complications.I drove him back to the pack house, enjoying the way he chattered excitedly about our day together."Did you see how fast we were going on the highway? And the music was so loud! Grandmother would never let me listen to that kind of music.""Well, t

Marcus stood in my doorway looking like a broken man. His expensive suit hung loosely on his frame, and dark circles shadowed his eyes."I'm sorry," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.I stepped back to let him in, more out of curiosity than kindness. He moved slowly, like every step caused him pain."I've been thinking. Reflecting on everything that happened between us."He sat heavily on my small couch, his large frame looking out of place in my modest living room."I finally understand why you want to dissolve our mate bond."His hands clenched and unclenched in his lap as he spoke."Twelve years of you having no voice. No choices. You retreated into yourself until there was nothing left."I remained standing, arms crossed, watching him carefully."The mate relationship exhausted you, didn't it? I took and took until you had nothing left to give."His voice cracked on the last word."I know you're completely disappointed in me now."I shook my head slowly. "Disappointment was

The doors closed on his desperate face.I had never harbored much hatred toward Victoria. She was just another victim of Marcus's emotional manipulation. The only person who had ever betrayed our relationship was Marcus himself.---That evening, I made a phone call I hadn't made in years."Emma? It's Sage."The silence on the other end stretched for several heartbeats."Sage? Oh my goddess, is it really you?""It's me. Are you free for drinks tomorrow?""Are you kidding? I'll call Claire right now. We'll be there."The next night, I sat in a cozy bar with Emma and Claire, my childhood friends who had helped me survive my traumatic upbringing."I can't believe you just walked away from him," Emma said, raising her glass. "You should have seen your face when you told us about the mate bond dissolution. Pure determination."Claire nodded vigorously. "We always knew the Blackwood family was toxic, but we didn't want to interfere.""Actually," Emma admitted, "we've been keeping tabs on you

"Logan will have everything he needs with me," Marcus said, his voice cold and final. "The best education, the finest clothes, connections to powerful families across all territories."I nodded calmly. "At least with you, Logan will never suffer when it comes to living conditions."Marcus's eyes narrowed, clearly expecting me to fight harder for custody."Material comfort isn't everything, but I know you'll provide well for him."I paused, then smiled with genuine warmth."Giving him an Alpha father is already the greatest contribution I can make as his mother."The casualness in my tone seemed to catch him off guard. His jaw tightened."You're joking. At a time like this, you're making jokes?""I'm being practical, Marcus. Logan deserves stability, and you can give him that."He stared at me for a long moment, his hands clenching into fists."I don't understand you anymore," he said through gritted teeth.Marcus stood abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor."I have other busin

That night, Marcus kept trying to reach me through our mind link. I blocked him completely. Then my phone started ringing nonstop.Even on silent mode, the screen kept lighting up and going dark. I couldn't stand it anymore and blocked his number. When calls wouldn't go through, Marcus started using unknown phone numbers to contact me.He asked when I had started planning to dissolve our mate bond. Was it really just because of that Moonlight herb bouquet? If so, he had already apologized. He couldn't understand why I insisted on holding onto this grudge. He said I couldn't throw away twelve years of hard-earned feelings just because of someone else's mistake. Our son was still young. I couldn't be so heartless as to destroy Logan's complete family.I thought for a moment, then texted him back:"You need to calm down."This phrase was Marcus's favorite response to all my emotional outbursts in recent years.I knew exactly how powerful these words were.Sure enough, within two minutes o
