Chapter 5

Author: Eleven
Downstairs, 10,000 white roses formed a bed of flowers with 100 white candles scattered among them, surrounding a crystal box at the very center. Inside the box were my eyeballs.

Next to the bed of flowers stood a choir as well as a priest, whom Samuel had specifically invited.

He mentioned that Daeleen was the gentlest soul alive and that she would surely become an angel after death. Only a priest's prayers could ensure that Daeleen received my eyes.

Onlookers expressed envy, and some were even moved to tears by Samuel's devotion to Daeleen. What they did not know was that the romantic Capo they were admiring had plucked out his own wife's eyes, and that the owner of the eyeballs on display were now lying on a bed, staring into nothing but darkness.

There was no painkiller being administered. All the moans from the pain left me panting for air, with only the ventilator to keep me from suffocating.

Suddenly, the ventilator stopped, and the air purification machine beside me stopped, plunging my surroundings into silence. Without the ventilator's help, my breathing grew rapid, and my pain grew even more intense.

With the air purification system shut down, the supposedly sterile room was now no different from any other location. The surgery to remove eyeballs was an extremely risky procedure, and without proper environmental conditions, an infection would be inevitable.

A confused voice rang out from outside. "The power's out! What happened?"

Another voice replied, "The priest said that Daeleen's soul would follow the prayers and the candlelights to be led to this place. Samuel was worried that artificial lighting might interfere, so he ordered for the power to be cut."

"Oh my, what a wonderful man! I've always thought that the mafia were ruthless criminals. I never expected that they would have such an affectionate gentleman."

The very man they saw as romantic was putting on a show for his first love while disregarding the safety of his own wife. I felt as if I could pass out from oxygen deprivation at any given moment, but I did not want to die in such a pathetic way.

I already knew that my child was gone and, along with it, the last shred of love I had for Samuel. Fortunately, Samuel never locked my door, and he also did not station any guards by my bedside.

He must have thought that a blind woman could not possibly pose a threat to him. I fumbled my way out of the room. I recalled that there was a vast ocean just behind the hospital.

As I passed through the garden, I heard Annie's desperate cries: "Please, Capo, you can't cut off the power! Mrs.Sterling's room needs to be kept sterile, and if the machines stop working, her wounds could get infected!"

"Get lost! Everyone's doing just fine with the power cut-off, so why would she be any different?!" Samuel kicked Annie aside and then issued orders to his subordinates. "I've put up with you long enough, Annie. Drag her away to the basement and break her legs!"

He then continued, "Bring Louise to the cemetery. I want her to kneel before Daeleen's grave and pray for her."

With that, Samuel picked up my eyeballs and got into his car to leave for the cemetery.

Annie broke down and started sobbing uncontrollably. Samuel's subordinates were hesitant, but none dared to disobey the Capo's orders.

The subordinates searched the entire building, but they never managed to find me. When they arrived at my room, they were greeted with an open door as well as bloodstains scattered across the floor.

I walked toward the sea, and I slowly walked into the frigid waters step by step.

As the waves reached my thighs, I received a call from Samuel. "What the hell are you doing, Louise? I'm telling you to get to Daeleen's grave immediately! If you waste any more of my time, I'll kill your entire family!"

My body temperature slowly seeped away through the seawater, numbing my pain. "Samuel, do you really think that you can hurt my family?"

"Watch your tone, Louise. I am a Capo of the Sterling family! The mafia's dignity is not something you can challenge, even if you're my wife!" Samuel shouted.

The seawater had now reached my neck. In front of me was nothing but darkness, but I still walked forward step by step with confidence. I will no longer give Samuel another chance to hurt me.

Right before the seawater was about to swallow me completely, I spoke up to the irritated Samuel once more. "Samuel, I won't let you hurt me ever again. Even if the Sterling family's Capo dei Capi were here, he would have to kiss my fingers.

"Allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is Louise Toledo."

  • An Eye for an Eye   Chapter 11

Two years later, Gavin held an art exhibition titled 'A New Life.' The pieces on display were created in two years as my vision was partially restored. Many renowned artists praised my artwork. What I did not know was that among the attendees of the exhibition was a special guest. It was a man in a trench coat wearing a mask. He was none other than Samuel.Samuel was now just Samuel. His family name, Sterling, had been stripped from him. He was not wearing the mask to hide his identity but because his face was already disfigured beyond recognition. He had made enemies during his bout in the underground arena and had acid thrown at him. He had also finally learned that my true identity was that of Louise Toledo. As he remembered all the things he had done to me, Samuel finally realized that his suffering now was the consequence of his own actions. Perhaps he should be grateful for my act of mercy, for when Gavin wanted to kill him, I was the one who stopped Gavin from pulling the t

  • An Eye for an Eye   Chapter 10

Samuel had yet to realize that danger was approaching, but Daeleen had already noticed it. The moment she confirmed that I had committed suicide out at sea, she immediately fled for her life. Just like when she had escaped back here from abroad, she disappeared underground like a rat.Meanwhile, Samuel spent a million dollars searching the ocean for my body for an entire month, but he never managed to find anything. He decided to give up for the time being. It was only then that he finally remembered about the Sterling family, which was on the verge of collapse after suffering attacks from other mafia families. But when he tried to return home, he was stopped by the guards at the door. "Excuse me, this is the Sterling family's territory. Unauthorized individuals are not allowed here."Samuel was a Capo of the Sterling family. If he had remained as ambitious as he once was, he would have been certain to become the next Capo dei Capi. It was not easy to train for a successor. But e

Even now, Samuel was still blaming others for his own mistakes.Annie stood coldly to the side as she watched the Capo sob uncontrollably. The completely grief-stricken Samuel did not even realize that Annie, who he had ordered to have her legs broken, was standing there just fine.Of course, I had already planned everything. Even if the Sterling family wanted to hurt her, the Toledo family could protect her.Just as I was about to jump out of the window, I was interrupted not only by the sudden call from my Mom but also by Annie, who had grabbed me from behind and begged me not to do it.Everyone had already left my side, but Annie still remained outside of my hospital room to keep watch over me. She was also the first person to notice my erratic behavior and saved me.I explained the situation to my father and finished making our plans. From then on, every word she spoke was what I had told her to say.I wanted Annie to witness the scene in my stead, to watch as Samuel sobbed u

  • An Eye for an Eye   Chapter 8

Both Samuel and Daeleen asked in unison. "What did you say?"He could not believe that someone as scared of death as I was would actually choose to commit suicide by drowning in the sea. I had once told Samuel that I was terrified of death because I loved him too much.I said that there were too many things that I wanted to do with him and that I would be filled with regret if I died too soon.He only remembered that I feared death, but he never remembered why I feared death. That was also exactly why he still had not yet realized that I no longer loved him.As for Daeleen, she was shocked because she thought that it was just a joke. She never imagined that I would actually die.The subordinate replied, "It's true, Capo. Everyone, including the priest, saw it happen. We sent our men to search for the body, but the currents were too strong, and we couldn't find anything. And, and—"As the subordinate began to hesitate, Samuel snapped at him angrily. "Speak! Do not try to hide anyt

  • An Eye for an Eye   Chapter 7

When I plunged myself into the sea, Samuel had just arrived at the cemetery. He was shocked when he heard me reintroducing myself as Louise Toledo.Members of the mafia must know about the Toledo family, which was the head of the Big Four mafia families. However, he never knew about my true identity even though we had been married for years. On the day of our wedding, my father was still angry with me and refused to attend the ceremony. No one knew that my father was the Capo dei Capi of the Toledo family. Samuel, however, did not believe my claims. He was simply furious that I had ignored him.Little did he know that I had already sunk into the frigid seawater. With time running up, Samuel had no choice but to take my eyes into the cemetery by himself. When he arrived, he saw someone that he had missed dearly.…A voice spoke up over the phone. "How dramatic. That Capo must really love you, huh? Not only did he set up a tombstone for you, he even plucked out his own wife's eyes.

  • An Eye for an Eye   Chapter 6

My phone slipped away from my hand and sank into the pitch-black seawater together with me. I would never know if Samuel had said anything on the other end of the line. I opened my hands and embraced the arrival of my own death. The next second, someone pulled me into their arms, dragged me out of the water, and carried me onto a speedboat. I was wrapped in a dry towel before I was pressed on my heart and lungs again and again to force several mouthfuls of seawater out of my mouth. A soft touch then pressed against my lips, and I realized that I was currently receiving artificial respiration. I instinctively tried to push the person away. Before I fully lost consciousness, I heard a familiar voice speaking to me. "You've really let yourself go over the years, Louise."I do not know how much time had passed when I woke up again. Darkness was still the only thing that I could see, but I could now hear the steady beeping of medical equipment. The familiar scent of disinfectants fil
