Chapter 3

Author: Washing Wheat
Julian held up the flashcards and read them to me over and over.

Instead, I looked at him without emotion.

In the end, he threw the flashcards into the trash and gently patted my head, his eyes red-rimmed with tears.

He said to forget it. Our family could afford to support one person who could do nothing.

When I was ten years old, Yara brought in a top brain specialist from overseas.

All sorts of cold medical equipment were placed on my head.

The results showed that my brain activity was unusual, but I was unable to develop normal language and reasoning skills.

Yara held the report and cried outside the door all night.

After that, no one bothered with me anymore. I didn't have to think, speak, or take responsibility for anything.

That was the life I had always wanted. But now, someone was about to take that life away from me.

"Take her outside." When Dad finally spoke, his voice was rough and dry. "No one is allowed to let her back in without my permission."

Lily tightened her grip on my arm and pulled me toward the door.

I didn't budge. My feet stayed firmly planted on the carpet.

Lily froze for a moment, then gave my arm a hard tug. "Ms. Celeste, don't be difficult. Come on."

I still didn't move. I simply stared quietly at the agreement on the table.

Steven frowned.

He kept up his gentle facade as he came over and lowered his voice. "Celeste, don't make your father angry. Now isn't the time for one of your episodes.

"Be good, and I'll buy you some candy later."

He called it an episode.

In front of my family, he treated me with respect. But whenever he came close, he spoke to me as if I were mentally ill.

I looked up and quietly stared into his eyes behind his glasses.

My stare made Steven uneasy, and he took a step back without thinking.

He actually felt the intimidating presence of someone superior to him in the eyes of a fool.

It was an illusion. It had to be.

"Why are you still here?" Dad suddenly slammed his hand on the table.

Water splashed out of the glass and spilled across the wooden table.

"Do I have to show you the way out myself?" he snapped.

Julian sighed and came over to pick me up. "Celeste, let me carry you outside."

Just as his hand was about to touch my shoulder, Zander glanced at his watch.

"There are five minutes left," Zander said. "Mr. Richard, my patience is limited. If you think refusing to sign is the more honorable choice, I won't force you. I'll see you in court."

He stood up and calmly buttoned his suit jacket. "But then it won't be a peaceful acquisition. Your family's assets will be forcibly liquidated.

"Your wife, along with your daughter who can't even speak, may end up on the streets."

Zander's words hit Dad where it hurt most.

Dad's shoulders suddenly slumped, and he looked ten years older in an instant.

"I'll sign," Dad said.

Those two words carried a tremendous weight.

Steven immediately pushed the agreement in front of Dad. Then, he uncapped the pen and respectfully handed it to Dad.

"Mr. Richard, this is a wise decision," Steven said.

The black Montblanc pen gleamed coldly under the overhead lights.

Dad's hand hovered in the air for a long time, but he still didn't take it.

Yara bit her lip, and her tears finally spilled onto the back of her hand.

"Is there really no other way, Steven?" she asked.

She looked up at him as if he were her only hope.

A faint flicker of pity crossed Steven's eyes, but his trademark gentleness quickly covered it.

"Yara, if there were even the slightest chance, I would never let Mr. Richard sign," he replied. "But the overseas capital behind Mr. York is deeply entrenched.

"We have nothing left to bargain with."

He even turned around and gave Zander a respectful nod. "Mr. York, once Mr. Richard signs, I hope you'll keep your promise.

"Leave the few trust funds held in the Sutton family's names intact."

"You'll all end up in jail with me!" Steven's wild laughter echoed through the hallway.I didn't look back.He thought I couldn't take the Yeagar family on? Please.Back in my previous life, I was putting multinational tycoons behind bars in court while the Yeagar family was still a minor player. When I walked out of the detention center, the sunlight was blinding.Julian was waiting for me in the car outside.I opened the door and got in."So? Did you find out anything?" He handed me a bottle of water, looking concerned.I opened it and took a sip. "Julian, block off that property on the south side of town. Don't let anyone in."Contact the best geological survey team we can find and have them inspect the land in secret."Julian's eyes widened. "You mean…""We have something incredibly valuable right under our noses, and we almost let someone throw it away."I looked out at the scenery rushing past the window and gave a faint, knowing smile.Over the next month, Sutton Gr

"Steven, how does 15 years in prison feel?" I leaned back in my chair and looked at him calmly."I heard the inmates serving serious sentences give you 'special treatment' every day," I continued. "After all, smooth-talking guys like you who scam people in nice suits are their favorite."Steven trembled violently. He gripped the bars tightly, his eyes bloodshot."Celeste, what the hell do you want?" he snarled. "I'm already in prison. Are you really going to keep coming after me?"I looked at him without emotion. "You think I'm still trying to destroy you? Don't flatter yourself."I leaned closer to the bars and lowered my voice. "Zander's cash flow has collapsed, but why did the private equity firm behind him suddenly pull its money out before you made your move?"Who leaked the information ahead of time and left Zander to take the fall?"Steven froze. His eyes darted around as he weighed his options. "I… I don't know what you're talking about."He was still trying to fig

I looked at Yara. The Sutton family might be a little arrogant, but they were quick to admit when they were wrong."Yara, your lab is working on biotechnology drugs, right?" I suddenly changed the subject.Yara paused, then nodded. "Yes, but we're extremely short on funding. I've been afraid to ask Dad."I opened the drawer, then pushed the ownership papers for the clean-energy company I had taken from Zander yesterday toward her."Sell this and put all the money into your lab," I said. "Sutton Group can't rely only on real estate and old-school finance. Technology is the future."The billion-dollar ownership papers left Yara completely stunned. She stared at me with wide eyes, her voice trembling. "Celeste, you're trusting me with such an important asset? Aren't you afraid I'll mess it up?"I kept my head down and continued reviewing the documents. "You have two doctorates. If you can't even get the finances back on track, you might as well tear up those degrees," I said pla

"Mr. Gould handled this case before he went—I mean, before he was arrested. Now that you've taken over, would you like me to read it to you?" Frank put extra emphasis on "read it to you". He was clearly trying to mock me for not understanding legal documents.I didn't look up and kept going through the documents in my hands."Mr. Muller, how many years have you worked with Steven?" I asked.Frank froze for a moment, clearly not expecting the question."Five years," he replied."Five years." I finally closed the case file and looked up at him. "After all that time, you still haven't learned to cover your tracks?"Frank's expression shifted. "Ms. Sutton, what do you mean?"I threw a financial report I had put together last night in front of him. "You drafted the original contract for the project on the west side of town."You deliberately left the breach clause vague so the other side could take advantage of it."Afterward, their finance department deposited a so-called consu

I lowered my head and put on a hurt expression."But Mr. Gould was awful today. He wanted to destroy our family," I said. "I couldn't keep pretending anymore."The excuse was only half true and a little weak, but for parents who spoiled their child, it was enough."Celeste…" Tears welled up in Dad's eyes, and he pulled me into his arms.He held me so tightly it almost hurt."This was all my fault. I should have noticed it earlier! I can't believe I let you suffer all these years."Yara rushed over and hugged me too. She was sobbing so hard she could barely speak."I'm sorry, Celeste. I'm so sorry," she said. "I thought you were really… I don't even know what your favorite food is."Julian stood nearby and quietly wiped away a tear.He walked over and gently ran a hand through my hair. The gesture was gentle, but there was a respect I had never seen from him before."Celeste, I'll never think of you as a nuisance again," he said. "From now on, you're in charge of the family

The moment I said that, Zander wasn't the only one stunned. Dad and Julian were too.The property on the south side of town was a huge liability. The government had refused to approve the development plans, and it had been sitting unused for years.Zander's clean-energy company was short on cash, but it was still a valuable core asset. This was nothing less than an outright robbery."Dream on!" Zander laughed in anger. "A billion-dollar company for a worthless piece of land? Celeste, you're asking for too much!"I stayed calm and leaned back in my chair."Mr. York, I don't think you understand the situation," I said. "I'm not negotiating with you. I'm telling you to pay up to save yourself."Once people find out that your cash flow has collapsed, your clean-energy company will be divided up by your creditors. You won't get a thing."Transfer it to me now, and at least I'll let you walk away with some dignity."I stood up and walked over to him. Then I spoke softly enough that
