INICIAR SESIÓNMy body ached before shifting to my feet, joints stiff and brittle.
The system spoke again, not at all helping matters. [Level 2: Transformation. Necessity for survival: full avoidance of human blood. Necessary for avoidance of full zombie transformation.] I coughed, catching myself on one of the shelves still containing leftover supplies from the initial chaos when the outbreak first happened. How could this be possible? I was sure I'd been bitten. My body still bore the marks of the teeth that had torn through it. Yet somehow I was still in my right senses, not a bloodthirsty monster. [Carrier detected. Proximity: 15 meters. Advice: prepare to attack.] My body, despite the ache, took on a defensive stance. [Threat drifting. 22 meters.] I held the stance for a second longer than necessary, even after the system told me it was moving away. [Abilities and control regenerated.] The system's robotic voice said it as soon as the last drop of blood dripped onto my tongue. "And here I was thinking you were the threat." A husky masculine voice caused me to snap my head back, my bloodied hands clenching into fists. "Who are you?" The man stepped into the room, his footsteps light and casual. My eyes trailed every inch of his body before settling on the bite mark lodged right on his neck. I stood instantly, raising my fists, ready to defend myself. "Get out, zombie." "I have to say, I'm kind of offended. You're at more risk of turning now than I am, considering you've been bitten everywhere." He shoved both hands into his pockets. "Can't we just sit together and wait for the inevitable?" [Hostile approaching. Danger level: medium. Level D zombie.] His head snapped back, eyes already narrowed. The zombie came in a moment later, and before I could react, he had a dagger in his palm, dashing forward. [Threat approaching.] The system didn't specify from which direction. Which was why I nearly shit myself when a zombie jumped in from the window behind me, snarling. Its body, already decaying, pressed against mine, teeth bared while bits and pieces of flesh dropped from its mouth. My hands closed around its neck, squeezing and holding it back from my face. The stranger was still fighting the zombie, and our gazes met in that moment, his expression confused. "You're not armed?" "Does it look like I am?" I snapped back, coughing when the zombie's saliva dripped onto my cheek. A blade slid across the floor to me. I snatched it up and had just enough time to say thank you before he went back to fighting off the zombie. My fingers tightened around the dagger before I slammed it into the side of the zombie, shoving it up and pushing myself to my feet. The body twitched before crawling back up again. Blood oozed out of its chest where the blade had sunk in. "It didn't... it's not dead." My voice shook slightly, the dagger already raised for the next attack. "I stabbed it, but it won't stay down." "Aim for its nape or throat. That's the only way," he replied, sinking his blade into the mouth of the zombie. The body twitched against it before slumping to the ground. "Need any help?" he called, wiping the bloodied blade on the clothes of the dead zombie. I forced my trembling fingers to steady before charging right at the zombie. It roared, coming right after me too, its teeth bared. I dodged the first blow, ducking beneath its hand and then kicking it to the floor. Before it could get up, I crashed my body against it, cracking the tiles beneath a bit. It snarled but couldn't move much because the impact had shattered its already decaying ribcage. I brought the blade up, sucking in a breath before slamming it right into its throat, the blood splashing onto my face. The sound of the flesh squelching rang in my ears, only interrupted by the voice of the stranger. "Not bad for your first kill, darling." His arm stretched out to grab mine. "Jeremy." "What?" "My name, it's Jeremy," he said, leaning down so his eyes were on the same level as mine. "Oh, I'm Arya, or at least I used to be." My eyes fell to my palms. "Not sure what exactly I am now." "That makes two of us." He shoved the dagger back into the sheath on his belt. I realised then that I was still holding onto his blade and stretched out my hand for him to take it. "You should keep that. Even if you are a half blood, you can't walk around unarmed. Your powers will only take you so far." "Powers?" I felt stupid for asking, but this meant that the heightened abilities I'd felt weren't imaginary after all. His eyebrow shot up. "You really don't know much about this new world, do you?" I shook my head. [Survival possibility heightened. Next step: partnership between Level A threats.] "Level A," he muttered, frowning. "You can hear it too? The system." I leaned forward, trying to catch his eye. "What's it for? How is any of this even real?" Before he could respond, the system spoke again, urgent this time. [Hostiles approaching. Level B zombies. Number: undetectable. Horde. Survival chance: 59 percent. Options: fight or run.] "Are you hearing this?" My heart raced. "What do we do?" [I suggest you run.]The black rain, in some ways, surpassed the zombies in terms of world-ending catastrophes.I'd know a zombie by the foul smell of their breath alone, but black rain?It looked exactly like regular rain, and it was impossible to tell the difference until it was burning through skin."Shit! It's started. Run!" I hissed as another drop made its way to my neck. The sizzling sound of the radiation burning my skin had me wincing.Jeremy didn't hear me finish before he was dashing forward, just a step ahead of me, as my eyes searched the nearby buildings for somewhere habitable. It couldn't be too large, because that ran the risk of us meeting zombies who'd been infected at work. Or worse, we'd enter an apartment building.Ding! [Shelter detected. Safety level: high. Joe's Convenience Store.]The rain was getting heavier, my breath racing as I reached the surrounding buildings. If the system decided that was the safest bet, I wasn't about to argue with it.Jeremy spotted the place before I d
I kicked the gun out of her grip before she could fire again. Then I planted my fist right in her face, knocking the crazy bitch out effectively. The gun lay discarded on the floor. It was a shame to let it lie there unused, so I placed it in my belt next to my knife, turning to Jeremy. "What the hell does the system..."My voice trailed off. There was a red spot spreading across the blue material of his borrowed cotton shirt. The first bullet had definitely met its mark.It was right over his heart, a fatal wound without immediate medical attention. But Jeremy was still standing, coughing a bit, but fine."How... you're injured. She shot you!"He pulled down his shirt just enough to reveal the bullet wound. The metal piece had lodged itself inside his chest, not so deep that I wouldn't be able to pull it out with my basic knowledge of first aid.Letting that bullet stay in would cause major issues."It's already closing," he said, stunned.I couldn't help but mirror his shock. How wa
Her back pressed against the hood of the car like a cornered animal.[Hostile detected. Threat level: level B]The zombie appeared right behind her, probably having heard all the noise. Before it could attack, I was already next to her, snatching my knife away and sliding across the hood of the car. Before the zombie could snarl, the knife was already buried to the hilt in its neck. The woman screamed behind me, taking uneven steps back until her body went crashing down.Jeremy caught her before she could face-plant, hoisting her back to her feet."Still think we're your enemy?" I asked, smirking. She gulped, her body trembling so hard I was shocked she could remain upright. "What are you?""Clock's ticking, darling. Are you in or are you dead?" I replied, stretching the dagger out so the hilt faced her.She could take it and try to attack, or she could join our little group of freaks while we made our way across the country for my sweet revenge.Telling her what we were would only ca
His body twitched way more than once before finally, slowly, getting off the ground, growling lowly. His wife screamed. It took me a second too long to realise they weren't just screams and were actual words."Emily! Go, go right now!"Her body thrashed, fighting against Jeremy's grip on her.The question of who Emily was didn't fully leave my mouth before the Honda zoomed off, fast. Too fast to be caught, even with our abilities."There were three of them, dammit," Jeremy growled, dumping the woman onto the floor. Her body slumped before she crawled back, eyes wide and fixed on her husband. Or more accurately, his corpse. The man rose to stand, his eyes bloodshot, red streams of blood flowing out of every hole in his head.He lunged for me, and my fingers flexed around my knife, but Jeremy caught him mid-blow, sending the zombie flying to the side.It snarled, standing to its full height again.I heard footsteps behind me, turning just in time to see the woman snatch my blade from my
It took me a moment to understand fully what I was looking at.The woman stared back at me, rifle in hand, aimed at my face. "What the hell are you? Say something before I blow your zombie brains out!"My feet remained frozen in place, my lips pressed shut. It felt like so long ago since I'd seen normal humans that weren't infected.Because of my lack of an answer, she lifted her gun higher, probably to act on her threat, though she never got the chance to.Jeremy snatched the tip of the rifle, yanking it away from her before her finger could press on the trigger. She screeched, darting after the gun until a hand came from the front seat and dragged her back. For a second, a scream almost tore from my throat. Then I opened the door to the driver's seat to reveal a man, middle-aged, about the same age as the woman in the back. They looked nothing alike, so they were probably married."Who the hell are you?" he asked, echoing his wife.He didn't seem armed from what I could tell, and hi
My head tilted back to the car surrounded by zombies. "Could there be people in there?""In this wasteland, where else would the system want us to search?" Jeremy glanced back too.The car slowly came to a halt, and my fingers tightened around the wheel on instinct."Why would we need to recruit anyone anyway?" I asked, groaning. "You think they're also zombie hybrids like us?""Probably. Why else would the system want us to recruit them?""Let's just go back and check. I don't have time for this," I said, switching the gear to reverse."Where are you in such a hurry to get to? Last I heard, the world kind of shut down when it got destroyed."I wasn't ready to explain to him what my intentions were. I certainly wasn't about to tell him my plan to haul my ass all the way to the stronghold in Manhattan where the survivors were said to be.My reason for going there wasn't for the cheap illusion of safety, no.Jason and Maya were heading there. And I couldn't help but feel curious about w
