The heavy snarls of the zombies blended perfectly with the black rain currently holding us in here.
"That door isn't going to hold for long," Jason muttered, his eyes fixed on the glass door of the shopping mall we were currently hiding in. "They'll find us if we run too." "Not if we leave something for them to keep busy with." Maya's broken, terrified voice came through the sounds. "What are you guys saying? It doesn't even matter if we get out, because the black rain is still there. The radiation from that alone will kill us before the zombies do," I pointed out, gesturing toward the broken window where droplets of rain seeped in. "So what? We just stay here and die? You can do that if you want to, but Maya and I want to live." I sucked in a breath, glancing between them. Maya stood behind him, trembling while holding onto his bicep tightly. The sight felt like a hand squeezing my throat. Still, I forced myself to ignore it. Maya and Jason were close, even with him being my boyfriend, but that didn't mean anything. The zombies pounded on the door harder, hungrier and desperate for our flesh. Maya pointed to the window, where a car stood unscratched across the road. "We can't wait this storm out here. They'll break through. We have to run to the car." "Are you insane? You'll get radiation burns!" She glared at me, pulling off Jason's jacket. "The leather will take most of the damage. Besides, what's a few scars compared to becoming zombie food?" "Don't be a coward, Arya. Take off your jacket and let's just do this." My heart raced, but I did as he asked, pulling off mine. Maya had lost hers over a week ago, when the apocalypse had first fallen and everything had gone to chaos. Now, her gaze was fixed hungrily on mine. She finally noticed me staring and forced a smile. "Oh, it's fine, Arya. I'll just share with Jason. You know he'll protect me." Something in her voice was taunting me. Regardless of what choice I made, I'd still lose something. My reply was cold and sharp, shocking both of them. "Fine, share with him." Their eyes widened, shocked that I hadn't given in and lunged at the chance to be with Jason. I stepped toward the door, turning back one final time to look at the zombies. The glass doors were already cracking, nearly pushed off their hinges by the massive weight pressing against them. "Alright then. Let's go," Jason muttered, lifting his jacket over his head. He climbed out first, his body barely covered from the acid rain by the roof overhang. "Come out. Hurry." Maya climbed out next, a few drops of the rain dripping onto her brow and burning through her shirt. Just as I was about to join, Maya stretched out her hand, smiling sweetly. "Come on. Hurry up and let me help you out." My shoulders drew in, my eyes fixed on her cracked fingernails stretched out to me. But then the sound of death behind me strengthened my resolve, and I took her hand, waiting for her to pull me out. Instead, she lunged, snatching the jacket off my back and shoving me back into the shopping mall. "Maya!" Jason called, his voice shocked. My body ached from the floor, barely able to sit up and stare at the girl I'd called my best friend since middle school. "No hard feelings, Arya, but that car has only two seats, and there isn't one for you." My gaze shifted to Jason, eyes wide. "Jason... you can't do this to me." He hesitated, and for a brief moment, I believed he would save me. But he simply turned his back to me, the jacket sweeping over his head. "Sorry, Arya, but if you come with us, there'll be no one for the zombies to feed on here. We'll all die if you come." His words felt like glass, tearing through the fragile illusion I'd built over the years. "Don't do this, Jason... Jason!" He turned and ran, right through the rain to the car, with Maya right behind him. The acid rain tore through their jackets, but they still made it. I watched the car come alive and the engine rev, the sound swallowed by the heavy crash that came from behind me. The zombies had broken through the door, piling over each other to get to their next meal. Me. I curled up, backing away toward the wall. My back hit the concrete just as the first one lunged for me. His claws dug into my skin, tearing it away. The pain threatened to swallow my whole body. The first zombie sank his teeth into me, holding me down while the others joined in on the feast. I lay there, helpless, as my body became food for the undead. The only thing fueling my weak efforts to escape was my anger and thirst for revenge. My body shifted onto my hands and knees, struggling to reach the window that suddenly felt so far away. Eventually, the fight left me, and my body crashed back to the floor, lifeless. The last thing I saw before taking my final breath was Maya's discarded water bottle, lying on the floor until the bright pink color faded to black. My body shot up, heart racing. The pain was gone. The room was empty too. [Congratulations, host. You have been upgraded past level 1: Survive]It took me a moment to understand fully what I was looking at.The woman stared back at me, rifle in hand, aimed at my face. "What the hell are you? Say something before I blow your zombie brains out!"My feet remained frozen in place, my lips pressed shut. It felt like so long ago since I'd seen normal humans that weren't infected.Because of my lack of an answer, she lifted her gun higher, probably to act on her threat, though she never got the chance to.Jeremy snatched the tip of the rifle, yanking it away from her before her finger could press on the trigger. She screeched, darting after the gun until a hand came from the front seat and dragged her back. For a second, a scream almost tore from my throat. Then I opened the door to the driver's seat to reveal a man, middle-aged, about the same age as the woman in the back. They looked nothing alike, so they were probably married."Who the hell are you?" he asked, echoing his wife.He didn't seem armed from what I could tell, and hi
My head tilted back to the car surrounded by zombies. "Could there be people in there?""In this wasteland, where else would the system want us to search?" Jeremy glanced back too.The car slowly came to a halt, and my fingers tightened around the wheel on instinct."Why would we need to recruit anyone anyway?" I asked, groaning. "You think they're also zombie hybrids like us?""Probably. Why else would the system want us to recruit them?""Let's just go back and check. I don't have time for this," I said, switching the gear to reverse."Where are you in such a hurry to get to? Last I heard, the world kind of shut down when it got destroyed."I wasn't ready to explain to him what my intentions were. I certainly wasn't about to tell him my plan to haul my ass all the way to the stronghold in Manhattan where the survivors were said to be.My reason for going there wasn't for the cheap illusion of safety, no.Jason and Maya were heading there. And I couldn't help but feel curious about w
Ding! [Transport located on this highway. Points allocated depend on the quality of the vehicle.]"Think we can get any points for just walking?" Jeremy mumbled, his eyes fixed on the horde of vicious zombies.Surprisingly, the system replied with a sharp and nonchalant no that had my eyes widening a bit."We're level A zombies. Right in the middle of the food chain. We might not have crossed paths with any higher ranks, but I don't want to push our luck. Walking isn't an option."I nudged him forward a bit with my shoulder until we were both making our way to the highway. The place smelled of burning flesh and fuel. Cars had crashed when their owners turned while driving. The doom and despair were almost impossible to bear. Our bodies were crouched down, sneaking through each car while trying to locate a decent one that might at least be functioning. Each one had an issue, though. It was either surrounded by zombies, had a zombie in it, was upside down, or was just burnt too badly to
Jeremy's eyes widened when the system repeated the number. "How are we going to get out?" I scoffed, rolling my eyes before letting my mind race for a solution. Eventually, there seemed to be only one. And it was almost as risky and stupid as barging out to fight almost two hundred zombies. "We can charge out." His head snapped to face me from his place next to the window. "What?" "We charge out while pushing the door, creating a path in between for us to run through with it. They're level Cs, so they can't be that smart." "Have you lost your mind?" The sound of his voice carried, riling the zombies outside even more. "What's the difference between that and just fighting them?" "The difference is that we live, and we don't stick around for a fight." I rushed to the kitchen. He followed right after me. "You can't actually be considering this. How will you even take the door off?" My fingers yanked the drawer open a bit too aggressively. There were four in total, and after car
The girl sank her rotten teeth into Jeremy's neck, barely able to break the skin with them.He slammed his elbow back, sending her flying across the room.Outside, the rain had stopped, meaning the only thing cutting through the quiet night air was the zombies' snarling.Unfortunately, that meant that any sound we made drew them closer."We need to kill her. Now." I straightened, stepping on a broken family frame. In it, the four members were smiling at the camera, with no idea this was where their lives would end up.Instead of feeling guilt, I forced myself to feel relief. Because that meant we'd dealt with all the zombies."And here I was thinking you were a zombie empath," he groaned as the zombie charged at him.She had to have been turned for a long while, because her body had definitely adapted to new abilities.Unfortunately, lack of food had worn it down and degraded it.A zombie snarled outside, banging its head against the wall.I grabbed a cloth from the table, rushing to
Jeremy jumped out of the window, pulling me out just as the horde barged into the shopping mall, snarling as their noses finally caught our scents."The black rain!" I called, just then noticing it had stopped."You were out for a while, princess. Just don't touch anything wet or step into any puddles, and we'll be fine," Jeremy called back, panting heavily. "Right now, acid rain is the least of our problems."We kept running down the street while some zombies spotted us and followed.[Hostiles approaching! Hostiles approaching! Take cover or fight.]His fingers flexed around the hilt of his knife, clearly ready to pick a fight he wouldn't win."Don't be a fool. Look back." I turned my head to stare at the horde of zombies approaching. "There are too many."In that moment, a zombie flew out of the window, landing right on his back.My fingers tightened around the knife, lashing forward before sinking it into the neck of the already rotting zombie.Jeremy didn't so much as grunt before
