Karla perched her chin across my shoulder before I could give him a reply, and despite me not having an answer to his question, I still felt more irritated than relieved.

"How are we going to get out of here?" she asked, gulping while trying not to panic. "We aren't going to drive this house to Manhattan."

"Yeah, we weren't planning on it," I grumbled, leaving behind an awkward moment of silence, until it was filled by the zombies scratching at the walls and snarling.

By the time we made it to the basement, Karla was a trembling mess, and she was very vocal about it too."You guys aren't seriously considering this!" Her voice was right next to my ear, sending me flying right into Jeremy from the high-pitched wail.My cheeks heated up when my back pressed against his abnormally hard chest."It was hard enough tricking all those things to run in there, and now you want to release them into the only safe place for God knows how many miles?""We aren't releasing them." My fingers twitched around the dagger in one hand, a jerry can in the other. "We're going to kill them.""You're going to kill all of them? There were like ten!""Nine, actually," Jeremy said, ignoring her questioning glance. "And yes. We plan to kill them all and then take the fuel.""This is ridiculous! There has to be another way, a better one to get that without risking all our lives. We don't even know if there's fuel in that thingy to drain out." She shook her head, still very clea

My eye twitched. Was it from the new information that had just been shoved into my face, or did it have something more to do with her calling Jeremy my boyfriend?"You locked all the zombies down there? I thought you said they were taken care of!""Yes, they were. You were dying, and there wasn't any time to slaughter all of them, so I trapped them down there instead," he grumbled. "I didn't think we'd stay here for long anyway."I wasn't sure if I was more annoyed that he'd locked them all in there or impressed that he'd actually managed to do it."So the basement is out of the options. There are too many down there.""How many is too many?" I asked, setting the jerry cans down. They were useless empty, and regardless of the risk, we all knew we needed that fuel.Getting it was only the first step, too, and possibly the easiest."About eight or nine. Maybe more? I couldn't really remember because of...all the chaos."The gap in his words sank in even without him fully saying it.My b

"The rain has stopped, thankfully, but it'll still be hard to travel on foot in the mud. We need a vehicle," Jeremy supplied, sitting straight. "It'll be even harder to find one just lying around by now. With fuel, too," I pointed out, turning back to Karla. "The car you were in on your way here..." She glanced down. "It was my husband's." Another awkward moment fell, but Jeremy didn't let it last long before moving forward. "We have enough food, water and medicine between all of us to last maybe a week if we ratio

I watched as Jeremy fumbled around for his shirt, sheathing his perfectly toned body away from me."Can you stand, or should I help you walk?" he asked, snapping me out of my little trance. After wiggling my toes for a few seconds, I shook my head. "I think I can manage alone."He hummed in response, and Karla scoffed. "You young couples. She fought a horde of zombies. I'm pretty sure she can handle a walk to the reception."My cheeks flushed. She was one to talk. "We aren't a couple."I wasn't quite sure if she'd heard, since the door slammed shut mid-sentence."I washed your clothes in the bathroom sink as best as I could and hung them up. They might not be dry, but... close enough."Nodding, I managed to force myself to my feet, the pressure almost foreign.Jeremy stood right next to me, allowing me to lean on him the whole walk to the familiar reception.I groaned at the sight of the blood trail at the entrance. My blood. And that of a lot of other people."Weren't there any zombi

He didn't act squirmish or tear his eyes away constantly like I expected.Instead, his gaze was fixed on my body, carefully avoiding all my injuries while cleaning out the mud."Why are you staring at me?" he asked suddenly, his voice nearly inaudible because of the rain and the sound of the zombies snarling outside. My throat felt slightly better now. Hopefully it was healing and not my body shutting down on itself."I hope you aren't turning into a zombie. If you do, I might just have to die with you, since the alternative is dealing with Karla."I snickered, unable to hold it in. The small laugh sent a small spike of pain across my throat."Don't talk. Sorry for that.""Sorry for what? Making me laugh?" I smiled through the pain. "I think I needed a good laugh."He pulled the plug out of the drain, allowing the now brown and red water to flow out. "There wasn't any hot water left."It was a miracle there was any water at all. The electricity was out, and we were left with the few f

He hadn't left me.Those words rang in my head, the only anchor left as we finally reached the motel door, zombies snarling behind us.Jeremy tried the door with his partially free hand before pounding on it hard with his foot."Karla! Open the damn door. Have you lost your mind?"I couldn't help but laugh. It didn't matter, I was dead, right? We'd saved her. Helped her into the motel, and she'd locked us out.It was such a typical move that I couldn't even bring myself to act shocked. She'd done what everyone else in my life would have done in this situation.Everyone except Jeremy, apparently. Since he'd have been on the other side of those doors if he hadn't come back for me.The roof of the motel kept us partially hidden from the rain. Well, I was hidden. Since he was holding me, the rain had to be touching his back."She's bitten, man. She'll turn into a zombie and kill us both if I let you in.""Are you fucking insane? She saved your life! And in case you haven't noticed, she wa
