Slipping her leather wallet into her coat pocket, Astrid Pierce strode calmly through the revolving glass doors of the Grand Horizon Hotel.

A brisk, chilly wind brushed against her face. Over in the VIP parking lot, her grandfather's black SUV sat parked beneath the concrete canopy. She pressed the key fob, and the hazard lights flashed once in response.

Before she could reach the driver's door, rushed footsteps echoed from the side service alley.

"Astrid! Stop right there!"

A figure crashed through the manicured shrubs, planting himself directly in front of her car door.

It was Julian Sterling.

He looked like a shadow of his former self. The crisp white shirt he once wore to flaunt his status as a high-flying director was now torn at the shoulder, grime-caked and soaked in sweat and warehouse dust. His trousers had worn through at both knees. His raw, scraped knuckles were stained with soot and rust from the heavy ice crates he’d been hauling, and the sour stench of sweat drifted off him in waves.

Astrid didn't take a single step back. Her eyes settled on Julian's face—flat, dead, and utterly cold, the exact way someone would look at a dead rat rotting in a gutter.

Panting for breath, Julian's eyes flared with manic intensity as he took in her pristine coat and understated jewelry.

"How can you be so ruthless, Astrid?" Julian’s voice wavered, struggling to strike a balance between wronged victim and desperate beggar. "You throw hundreds of thousands around on hotel catering, while your own ex-husband is breaking his back as a common porter, choking down stale instant noodles in a cramped shithole!"

Astrid crossed her arms, a razor-thin, sarcastic smirk tugging at the corner of her lips.

"Sounds like an honest day's work for you, Julian," she said breezily. "At least you earned that money with your own two hands today instead of stealing from someone else's trust fund."

Julian’s face burned with humiliation, but sheer desperation swallowed whatever dignity he had left. Taking a step closer, his voice dropped to an oily, nauseating whisper.

"Astrid, just listen to me for a second," he pleaded, reaching a filthy hand out toward her arm. "We spent two whole years under the same roof. Is there really nothing left between us? I know I screwed up with the investments yesterday, but I had my back against the wall!"

Astrid shifted half a step aside, dodging his fingers as if his touch were lethal poison. Julian’s dirty hand grasped at empty air.

"Get to the point," Astrid cut him off, her tone sharp as glass. "I don't have time to listen to a beggar whine."

Julian swallowed hard, forcing down the fury boiling in his chest.

"Just give me enough to eat and a decent roof over my head," he demanded, his tone turning entitled once more. "Nothing crazy. Five hundred thousand dollars to start a new business and rent a proper apartment. Once you do, I swear I'll never bother you again. That’s chump change compared to the hundreds of millions you cashed out yesterday!"

Hearing such an absurd number roll off her ex-husband’s tongue without a trace of shame, Astrid let out a dry scoff.

"Five hundred thousand dollars?" She looked Julian straight in the eye. "A used tissue in my car is worth more than your entire life, Julian. Now get away from my door before I call security to break your other wrist."

Julian's temper snapped, veins bulging along his neck. "You heartless bitch! You—"

"Help! Someone please help us!"

A piercing screech abruptly shattered the tension in the parking lot.

From behind a concrete pillar near the lobby staircase, Eleanor Sterling charged out in a theatrical, calculated frenzy.

The older woman was draped in dirt-stained rags, her hair deliberately teased into a tangled mess. Without the slightest hesitation, she threw herself onto the rough asphalt right beside Astrid’s front tire, crawling forward while wailing hysterically.

"Astrid, have mercy on us!" Eleanor sobbed, her voice echoing loudly across the parking area. "Your mother-in-law is an old, sick woman! Julian is such a devoted son, but you threw us out onto the street without a single penny to our names!"

The dramatic spectacle instantly drew the eyes of dozens of hotel guests, private chauffeurs, and valet attendants milling about the front drive. People began turning their heads, edging toward the curb, and murmuring among themselves as they watched an elderly woman groveling at the feet of a well-dressed young woman.

"Look at that... that poor old woman..."

"Who is that girl? How could she let an elder kneel in the dirt like that?"

Judgmental whispers rippled through the gathering crowd. Eleanor pressed her face close to the pavement, feigning violent sobs behind trembling hands.

Yet Astrid’s sharp eyes caught a glaring inconsistency tucked under Eleanor’s sleeve.

Concealed beneath the folds of her torn blouse, Eleanor’s right hand firmly gripped a flagship smartphone. Propped against her dingy purse, the front camera was recording, its red tally light glowing bright as it captured Astrid’s impassive expression from a low angle.

In the age of social media, a video showing a wealthy former daughter-in-law abandoning her mother-in-law to crawl in the asphalt would catch fire within hours. Once public outrage took hold, societal pressure would corner Astrid into paying hush money just to protect the foundation's reputation.

A pathetic, cheap trick cooked up by desperate parasites.

Julian stood beside his mother, arms folded with a smug grin as he watched the onlookers cast scathing glares at Astrid.

"Just own up to it, Astrid," Julian whispered smugly. "Hand over the money right now, or this footage will drag your family's name through the mud before sunset."

Astrid didn't show a flicker of panic. Her face remained utterly serene, treating the surrounding crowd like nothing more than background noise.

She took a single step forward, standing directly over Eleanor as the woman continued her fake crying.

"You want to put on a show in public, Eleanor?" Astrid’s voice was smooth, almost conversational.

Before Eleanor could register the threat, Astrid’s right foot shot forward.

Crack!

The toe of Astrid's boot struck Eleanor’s right wrist with surgical precision.

"Ah!" Eleanor shrieked in shock as her grip broke.

The recording smartphone was launched into the air, spun twice, and landed squarely in Astrid’s waiting left hand.

Eleanor's eyes bugged out in horror as her trump card was snatched away. "Give me back my phone! Thief!"

Julian lunged forward to grab it. "Astrid, don't you dare—"

Astrid ignored him completely. Tapping the screen to kill the recording, she tossed the phone onto the asphalt at her feet and brought the heavy steel-capped heel of her combat boot down with crushing force.

CRUNCH!

The strike pulverized the device. The glass screen shattered into a web of shards, the punctured battery spat a hiss of sparks, and the metal frame was crushed into a flat, lifeless scrap of junk.

The crowd gasped, freezing in stunned silence at the cold, ruthless efficiency.

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his nerve evaporating instantly under the predatory menace radiating from his ex-wife's eyes.

Astrid wasn't finished. Leaning down, she seized Eleanor by the collar and hoisted the older woman up until their faces were inches apart.

Foul, rancid breath puffed against her, but Astrid’s gaze drove straight into her former mother-in-law’s pupils with chilling, suffocating intent.

She whispered coldly into Eleanor’s ear:

"Twenty days from now, the two of you will be begging to lick the filthy puddles beneath my boots."
