The First Account She Cut

“Ivy is burning up!” Katie's terrified scream tore through the house before Amanda could finish reviewing the last bank statement, and footsteps thundered upstairs as panic suddenly swallowed the quiet morning. Amanda slowly lowered her phone.

Her expression tightened as Katie appeared on the staircase, clutching nine-month-old Ivy against her chest. Katie's face was drained of color, and her trembling voice barely held together as she hurried toward Susan. “Mom, something is wrong with her."

"She’s so hot.” Susan reached for Ivy immediately, pressing her palm against the baby's forehead before recoiling at the heat. Her eyes widened with alarm. “Oh my God, Katie. She has a terrible fever.”

Katie's breathing became uneven as she bounced Ivy against her shoulder, desperately trying to soothe her crying. “We need to take her to the hospital. Right now. I think something is seriously wrong.”

Amanda remained seated. Back then, Amanda had never waited for anyone to ask. She had simply paid. Katie noticed her silence and hurried toward her.

Desperation replacing the fear in her eyes. “Amanda, please. I need your help. Ivy needs a doctor.”

Amanda looked at the baby, then slowly returned her gaze to Katie. Her voice remained remarkably calm. “How much do you need?”

Hope flashed across Katie's face so quickly that Amanda almost laughed. Katie immediately named the amount, explaining that she needed money for consultation, medication, tests, and transportation. “I’ll pay you back, Amanda. I promise."

"I just need you to help me now.” Amanda studied her stepsister for several seconds. The promise sounded painfully familiar. Katie had promised to repay her before. For groceries. For bills. For personal expenses.

For things Amanda could barely remember anymore. Amanda folded her arms across her chest. “Why don’t you have the money?”

Katie stared at her, confused by the question. “What?” Amanda's eyes remained fixed on her.

“I asked why you don’t have money for your daughter's medical care.” Katie's lips parted, and her fingers tightened around Ivy. “Because I thought you’d help.”

A faint, humorless smile touched Amanda's mouth. “That’s exactly the problem.”

Katie froze. Susan turned toward Amanda, her face tightening with disbelief. “What exactly is that supposed to mean?”

Amanda finally looked at her step mother and thought, the Amanda before would have stood up, taken Ivy, called the hospital, and solved everything. But that woman had died outside a locked door.

Amanda's voice remained quiet. “It means Ivy isn’t my responsibility.” The silence that followed was so complete that even Ivy's weak crying seemed painfully loud.

Katie stared at Amanda as though she had suddenly begun speaking another language. “What did you just say?”

Amanda didn't look away. “I said Ivy isn’t my responsibility.” Susan stepped closer, her voice rising with shock. “How can you say that? She’s your sister’s child.”

Amanda's gaze moved slowly toward Katie. “Exactly, I am aware.”

Katie's face crumpled. “Amanda, she’s sick.” Amanda glanced at Ivy again. The baby was innocent.

Amanda knew that better than anyone. “I know.” She said.

Katie stared at her in disbelief. “You know she’s burning with a fever, and you’re just going to sit there?”

Amanda's fingers tightened beneath her folded arms. “Yes.”

Susan's mouth fell open. She looked at Amanda for several seconds before shaking her head.

“Amanda, this isn’t you.”

Amanda almost smiled. “Maybe you never knew me.” Susan recoiled as though the words had physically struck her. Katie's eyes filled with tears. She stepped closer, lowering her voice.

“Amanda, please. Whatever is wrong, we can talk about it later.” Amanda watched her sister carefully. The desperation in Katie's voice would once have broken her. Not anymore. Katie wiped her tears with the back of her hand.

“You love Ivy.” Amanda's eyes softened for the briefest moment as they settled on the baby. “I do.”

Katie seized that small softness immediately. “Then help her.” Amanda's expression hardened again.

Amanda's expression instantly hardened into cold stone once again. “Loving a child doesn’t make me responsible for her parents’ choices.” Katie went perfectly still. Susan's eyes sharpened dangerously. “Watch what you’re saying.”

Amanda turned around. Her voice remained perfectly controlled. “Why should I?” Susan's confidence faltered slightly. “You’re just angry.”

Amanda shook her head slowly, letting the tense silence stretch. “No. I’m finally being honest.” Katie looked incredibly frightened. “Amanda.”

Katie stared at her, her voice becoming very desperate again. “Just lend me the money. I’ll pay you back.” Amanda tilted her head. “When?”

Katie hesitated nervously. “After—” Amanda interrupted calmly, “After exactly what, Katie?”

Katie struggled for an answer. “After I figure things out.” Amanda gave a quiet, humorless laugh. “You’ve been saying that for years.”

Susan stepped between them, her patience breaking. “Amanda, enough. My granddaughter, Ivy needs immediate treatment.”

Susan's voice softened into a familiar manipulative tone. “Please. Don't punish a sick baby.”

Amanda's jaw tightened. The heavy guilt trip was familiar, but this time, it failed completely. Amanda reached calmly for her phone.

Katie's shoulders immediately relaxed, believing Amanda had finally surrendered. Then Amanda opened her banking application. Katie's expression changed. “What are you doing?”

Amanda's thumb moved rapidly across the glowing screen. “Cleaning up my compromised accounts.”

Katie stepped closer, watching Amanda delete her supplementary card. “Amanda, wait!”

Amanda didn't stop. Susan leaned forward in true alarm. “What are you doing?” Amanda finalized and smirked. “She doesn't need access to my money.”

Katie stared at the confirmation screen. “You’re cutting me off?” Amanda's voice remained completely calm. “Yes.” Katie shook her head. “Because I asked for money?”

Amanda opened the next security setting. “No, well more us coming at.”

She quickly removed Susan's automatic monthly transfer. Susan's face went white with shock. “Wait. What did you just do?”

Amanda locked her phone screen, staring directly into the older woman’s terrified eyes. “I stopped it.”

Susan stared at her, completely bewildered by the sudden financial cutoff. “What?, How could you? I am your mother.”

Amanda’s expression remained entirely stone cold. Susan's voice dropped into horrified disbelief.

“You can't stop my allowance.” Amanda stared at the two women standing before her, answering without hesitation. “I just did.”

Katie looked frantically between them, her panic spiraling wildly. “Amanda, this isn't funny.”

Amanda didn't even blink. “I’m not joking either.”

Susan stepped forward angrily, her face flushing bright red with indignation. “After everything I’ve done for you?”

Amanda’s eyes hardened dangerously as she immediately interrupted the familiar, manipulative lie. “Everything you’ve done for me? Nonsense.”

Amanda glared at them both. “For years, I solved every single problem.” She pointed sharply at Katie. “Your daily bills.” Amanda shifted her furious gaze directly toward her stepmother. “Your expenses and her medical care.”

Amanda stepped closer, her voice vibrating with deeply suppressed rage. “What did I get in return? I gave you all absolute security.” She forced her raw emotion down, staring right through them both now. “Nothing.”

Amanda swallowed hard. “I realized I was only your ATM.”

Katie's lips parted in shock, while Susan looked away. “Don't come to me now.” Susan's voice trembled with hypocritical outrage. “You’re truly abandoning little Ivy?”

Amanda's expression shifted, her eyes incredibly blank. “I’ll give you one piece of advice.” She looked directly at her sister. “Take your daughter to the hospital.” Katie stared in total horror. “With what money?”

Amanda's face remained completely unreadable. “Yours.”

They began sorting the stolen goods into two groups, counting sealed packages and checking the contents of the boxes. Some of the medical supplies had been crushed, while a few containers had leaked during transport. Darius's men separated the damaged items from the usable ones and made sure neither side received only the worthless goods. The process took longer than Eric expected. There were bottles of water, canned food, dry provisions, basic medical supplies, batteries, and other household necessities. Amanda had bought them gradually, and the variety surprised even the men who had broken into the house. The supplies were valuable, especially with prices rising and rumours of shortages spreading through the city. Darius insisted on counting everything before they finished. Eric complained twice, but Katie warned him that a careless division would only create another argument. By the time they were done, the two groups had been separated as evenly as possible. Half of the us

The rain had stopped, but water still dripped from the roofs as Eric pulled into the narrow driveway of an abandoned property on the outskirts of the city. He switched off the engine and checked his phone. Darius had sent him the location twenty minutes earlier, along with a message confirming that the job was done. Eric smiled. At last, something had gone according to plan. For days, Amanda had ignored his calls, refused to give him financial support, and even sent him divorce papers as though he were some stranger she could simply erase from her life. She had made him look powerless, and he hated her for it. He stepped out of the car and straightened his jacket before walking toward the building. The property had once been used as a small storage facility, but its owner had abandoned it after business declined. Now, it offered enough privacy for Eric to meet Darius without attracting unnecessary attention. Katie was already inside. She stood beside a wooden table, checking mess

Raymond caught her before she could stumble. “That's enough.” His voice was firm now, but not angry. He guided her to the least damaged chair and helped her sit. “Your health comes first. If you become ill again, this damage will still be here. Nothing will be solved by you hurting yourself.” Amanda stared at the floor, breathing unevenly. The truth of his words only made her cry harder. She hated that he was right. She hated that she was too exhausted to do anything and she hated the people who had taken advantage of her absence. After a moment, Raymond crouched beside her again. “Have you eaten anything since i took you the hospital?” "No." She shook her head. “Then we'll deal with that first. After that, we'll make sure you're somewhere safe for the night. Tomorrow, when you're feeling stronger, we can inspect everything properly.” Amanda wiped her face with trembling fingers. “Somewhere safe,” she repeated bitterly, tears gushing down her face. “I thought my house

Her knees weakened. She caught the edge of the table, then sank into a chair and began sobbing harder.“God, why? Why is this happening to me? Why me?” She cried. She pressed both hands against her chest as though she could physically hold herself together.“I haven't even recovered fully! I just came back from the hospital. I was in so much pain that I thought I was going to lose my baby. I thought I would die!”Raymond crouched in front of her. “Amanda, look at me.”She shook her head violently. “I can't do this anymore. I can't keep fighting every single day. I can't!”“Yes, you can,” he said gently. “But you don't have to do everything this minute.”“They have taken everything! They damaged everything and broken my security system! How do I start all over? What am I supposed to do?”Her voice cracked on the last word. “What am I supposed to do?”Raymond took her hands carefully, avoiding the cuts and broken glass around them. “We'll find out what's missing. The rain had almost stopped by the time Raymond turned into the road leading to Amanda's fortress.Amanda sat quietly in the passenger seat, one hand resting over her stomach and the other holding the hospital discharge papers inside her bag. Her body felt weak, and every bump in the road reminded her that she needed rest. All she wanted was to get home, take her medication, lie down, and forget about the frightening hours she had just endured.“Almost there,” Raymond said, glancing at her.She nodded faintly. “I can't wait to lie down.”“You're going to do exactly that when we arrive. No work, no lifting anything and no running around.”Despite her exhaustion, Amanda managed a weak smile. “You're beginning to sound like the doctor.”“Good. Maybe you'll listen to me if I sound like one.”She almost laughed. For a few seconds, the tension in her chest eased. She imagined walking into her bedroom, changing into something comfortable, and lying beneath her blanket. Perhaps she would fina

“I had no choice.” She lowered her voice. “I was already planning to divorce him anyways. I knew our marriage was over, but I didn't know how to leave safely or how to protect myself. Then I discovered the baby, and everything became more complicated.”Raymond stared at her, struggling to absorb everything she had revealed.“Eric is the father,” Amanda continued quickly. “I know that but I don't want to stay married to him. I don't want to raise this child in a home where I am constantly mistreated. I kept the pregnancy from him because I needed time to find a way out and prepare myself.”Raymond's expression softened, though concern still filled his eyes. “You should have told someone.”“I was afraid.” She wiped away a tear. “I was afraid no one would understand. I was afraid you would think I had deceived you, or that you would see me differently because the baby belongs to Eric.”Raymond reached for her hands. “I don't see you differently.”“You should.” Amanda sobbed.“No.” His vo
