Chapter 3

Penulis: Lights & Fire
The officer said, "Amber has been dead for nine days."

I froze. By the time I came back to my senses, the police had already left.

My back was drenched in cold sweat. In hindsight, Amber's behavior that night didn't seem like that of a living person at all.

For the rest of the day, I felt distracted and uneasy. Just as I was wrapping up my shift, Amber came looking for me again.

"Hello, Dr. Cantrell," she said with a smile. "I'd like to have a check-up."

I stared at her, my palms damp with sweat.

There had to be a connection between her and Kaylee—perhaps they knew one another.

To get to the truth, I took her blood pressure and heart rate.

Strangely, what the police had said didn't seem to be true. Amber appeared completely healthy, with no abnormalities in her vitals.

"I don't know what your connection to Kaylee is, but she's a good person," I said. "I hope you won't hurt her."

My words seemed to land heavily on Amber, and she stared at me in silence for a long moment.

Finally, she gave a faint smile. "Things aren't always what they seem. We'll meet again, Dr. Cantrell."

With that, she walked away. Only then did I notice the goosebumps covering my skin.

As I was packing up to go home, I spotted an empty syringe on the floor. The wear on the needle made it obvious it had been used before.

Still, the strange green liquid inside didn't match anything stocked in the emergency department.

The moment I recognized the label on the syringe, every hair on my body stood on end. A cold wave surged from my feet to the top of my head.

NECH nerve-blocking agent—this was a powerful drug with serious side effects, used specifically for treating neuropathic pain.

Only one possibility remained—Amber was the one who had left it there.

The police officers came to see me.

"Dr. Cantrell, we've reviewed the surveillance footage from the night you met Amber," the young officer said with a confused look. "It shows you were alone in your office the entire time. You never moved."

"That's impossible."

My eyes widened. I quickly brought out Amber's medical record from Halloween night, along with the used syringe.

"After that night, Amber came to see me again. Oddly enough, I had deliberately checked her pulse and blood pressure, and everything was normal. But she did leave this drug behind."

The officer's expression tightened as he picked up the empty syringe. "What drug is this?"

"NECH nerve-blocking agent. It's a medication used to treat neuropathic pain."

The young officer watched me for a long moment. Finally, he said, "Thank you for your cooperation, Dr. Cantrell. We'll need to take this evidence back for further investigation. Is that alright?"

I quickly nodded. "Of course."

I made my way home after leaving the hospital. As I opened the door, the smell of alcohol hit me. Neither Kaylee nor I drank, so where could it be coming from?

Seeing the high heels at the entrance, I knew Kaylee was in the bedroom. From the day things suddenly became strained between us, she hadn't spoken to me once.

It felt as if we were no more than silent roommates, sharing a house while living completely separate lives.

But while I was washing up in the bathroom, Kaylee suddenly appeared behind me. Her arms slid around my waist, pulling me close.

"Beau, I'm so sorry about that day," she said softly. "Things at work have been rough recently, and it had affected my mood. It's all resolved now. I hope you're not still mad at me."

My heart skipped a beat. Whenever she uttered those words, it meant our silent standoff had come to an end.

After drying my hands, I reached down and grasped her hands at my waist.

Jessica suffered severe burns over most of her body and was left in critical condition, while I only sustained facial disfigurement. In that moment between life and death, I realized Jessica was still the person I cared about most. I carried her into the emergency room, where a bespectacled doctor was on duty.He was gentle in his approach, and I trusted his medical expertise. Through tears, I begged him to save Jessica's life. He assured me that he would—but in the end, he failed.Jessica still departed anyway. Watching her body being wheeled into the morgue, every bit of regret and resentment hardened into hatred toward that doctor. If it weren't for him, my family might have survived. His name became permanently etched in

It was eerily quiet; only Amber's and my breathing could be heard. A moment later, the security door seemed to swing open.A rush of footsteps flooded the living room, followed by the shouts of men. "Don't move! Police!"In an instant, a scuffle erupted outside, but it was over just as quickly. Then came another knock—this time at the bedroom door."Dr. Cantrell, the suspect has been apprehended. Please come out."After exchanging a glance with Amber, I went to open the door. The living room was packed with police. Kaylee and another officer were on the floor, handcuffed and completely restrained."It's you?" I recognized the officer pinned to the floor. It was the same young cop who had come to see me alone a few days earlier and taken the syringe from me.Wallace Gentry, the middle-aged officer, stepped forward and shook my hand. "Thank you, Dr. Cantrell. This man's badge number is fake. He's an impostor."Also, everyone here will need to come with us tonight. We'll get to the

Seeing that I had locked the officer outside, Kaylee grew even more hysterical. She raked her nails across the glass door and even sank her teeth into it."Let me out! All of you can go to hell! Fuck you, Beau!"Only then did I realize Kaylee had been trapped out on the balcony. Without a second thought, I pulled Amber into the bedroom and locked the door behind us."We don't have much time. Hurry and find more evidence."Amber immediately began rummaging through the bedside table and the closet. At the same time, I called the middle-aged officer who had come to see me the day after Halloween. He had given me his number."Hello, this is Beau Cantrell. You came to my office the other day to ask about Amber's case."Right now, we're trapped at home with the killer. My address is Unit 403, Building 3, Riverside Apartments!"There was no hesitation on the other end of the line. "I'm on my way."The call disconnected, but my heart was still pounding in my throat. The commotion out

"From then on, I believed Isla's death was far more than a mere car accident. I went back to the police station to file another report, only to be dismissed again by the same officer. He even confiscated Isla's phone."The more I listened, the more unsettled I became. "Why didn't you expose what happened?""Because I later discovered that I was being watched as well."What frightens me most is the possibility that the officer and the killer were in this together. They caused Isla's death. I will make them pay for it."Amber's voice started to tremble, and tears spilled from her reddened eyes."But the killer is still after me, and only now do I understand why she replaced Isla's name on the autopsy report with mine."Because from the outset, I had always been her true target."My heart sank as I listened to her story. "You're saying Kaylee is the one who did it?" I asked solemnly.Amber slowly nodded. "Dr. Cantrell, you're the only one who can help me.""And what exactly do yo

My face hardened. "If you keep talking nonsense and interfering with my life, I'll call the police.""Call them if you want. It won't make a difference." Hearing the word "police," Amber's tone stayed calm and indifferent. "If you saw the injuries on my body, I believe you'd come with me."She then lifted her dress in front of me. I instinctively looked away, yet I could still see blood dripping at her feet.As my gaze shifted upward, I noticed dense needle marks covering her legs. Her skin had turned a bluish-purple shade—the unmistakable sign of a severe drug overdose reaction. There was also a deep cut on her thigh, exposing the bone beneath. Fresh blood continued to seep from the wound. As a doctor, I was particularly sensitive to blood. "Are you out of your mind? Why haven't you gone to the hospital for a wound this serious?"Driven by medical duty, I tried to take her to the nearest clinic, but Amber pulled her hand away from mine."Dr. Cantrell, you're a man of principle,

"Of course, I'm not mad at you. If work gets stressful next time, you can tell me. You don't have to carry it all by yourself."I turned around and looked Kaylee in the eyes. Her cheeks were tinged with a rosy flush. Standing so close, I could smell the alcohol on her breath.I was surprised. "Have you been drinking? I thought you never touched alcohol."Kaylee lowered her head slightly, resting it against my chest. In a soft voice, she said, "I got everything at work settled, and I was just feeling happy tonight. Please forgive me, okay? How about we go out for some barbecue?"She suddenly raised her head. Her eyes gleamed as they met mine.I was really tired, but since we'd just reconciled, I couldn't bring myself to spoil her good mood. "Sure."Kaylee couldn't wait any longer and tugged me out the door. Instead of driving like we normally did, she unexpectedly chose to walk with me."Why are we walking? It's over half an hour away." My legs ached, and it felt like a heavy sto
