Ch 5 - His Loss

SHAY'S POV

“Cyrus! He’s totally crushing on you right now,” she pointed out. I turned to look at the blonde hair, green eyed boy and he was already smiling our way. He’s extremely cute, but Pixie was seeing things.

I blushed once more. “You’re speaking rubbish!”

“Uh huh! Look at the blush on your face! You totally like him too,” she squealed.

“Shut up!” I groaned, banging my head on the table.

“Have you guys gone through the menus yet?” Cyrus asked, making my head shoot right back up. He looked amused by my antics, to which I blushed.

What the hell is wrong with my cheeks?

“Uh, not yet! What would you suggest we have?” Pixie smiled.

“Everything here is honestly good,” he admitted.

I raised an eyebrow at him, amused. “You’ve had everything here?”

“Guilty as charged,” he chuckled.

“Well Cyrus, a triple cheeseburger with double fries and a large bubblegum milkshake sounds good to me right now,” Pixie smiled. Cyrus’ eyes widened.

“And I’ll have a double cheeseburger, single fries, two pieces of fried chicken and a medium chocolate milkshake,” I ordered. He looked at us in disbelief.

“Are you guys expecting your boyfriends or something?” he narrowed his eyes, though there was some animosity in his voice. I wonder what that’s about.

Pixie was tickled. “No, why?”

“You’re both going to eat that much?” he asked.

I smiled at that. “Yep! We’re growing girls who love food.”

“Wow! You guys are awesome! I like a girl who can eat,” he chuckled, looking my way.

“Thanks! You’re not too bad yourself. Shay here can eat for days,” Pixie winked. I glared at her while Cyrus chuckled.

“Well, let me go get your orders before you eat the table,” he teased.

“Cyrus!” we gasped as he walked away laughing.

“He so likes you!” Pixie giggled.

“He does not!” I denied. I’d never had a boyfriend before, and I wasn’t going to start now.

“Oh come on Shay! He’s totally into you. Let’s put a bet on it if you don’t believe me,” she smirked.

I narrowed my eyes at her. “What’s the bet?”

“I bet you he’s going to give you his numbers on a napkin. If I lose, you can make me eat a whole pawpaw. If you lose, you have to save his number, and you’ll be calling him tonight,” she bet.

She hates pawpaw.

“Deal!” I shrugged. It’s not like she was going to win.

I spoke too soon!

Cyrus returned with our food and was being extra nice to me. Pixie pointed out countless times that he was ‘flirting’. I, of course, didn’t believe her. When it was time to leave, he brought the bill over to us, and true to word, his number was on a napkin, together with the words ‘Shay, call me!’. I was too shocked to actually believe it. I looked up at him and he winked at me with that adorable smile of his.

That adorable smile?

What am I saying?

“I so told you!” Pixie said happily as we headed to my dad’s car.

I sighed as we reached the car. “I didn’t think you were even remotely right! Why would he like someone like me?”

“What’s wrong with you?” she asked as we put our bags into the car before going in.

“I’m so awkward Pix!” I complained.

“What’s this about?” my dad chuckled.

“Shay just got hit on by a cute boy, but she apparently doesn’t think that she’s worthy,” Pixie informed him.

My dad raised an eyebrow. “And why not?”

“I’m just not the kind of girl guys would go for,” I said lowly.

“How would you know if you’ve never had a boyfriend?” Pixie challenged.

“That, on its own, is proof enough,” I used her question to my advantage.

“Shay, you have a guy interested in you. The least you could do is give it a shot,” my dad told me.

I was shocked. “You’re condoning this?”

“You’ve been a shell of yourself for two years baby girl. It wouldn’t hurt to at least be out there a little,” he chuckled.

I groaned. “But a boyfriend daddy?”

“So you DO want him to be your boyfriend!” Pixie smirked.

“I didn’t say that,” I denied.

“No-one said he has to be your boyfriend, and yet you jumped to that conclusion all on your merry own,” she giggled. I glared at her while my father joined in laughing.

“All we’re saying is that you should at least talk to the boy! You could end up making a great friend,” my dad pointed out.

“She’s clearly not looking for just a friend,” Pixie wiggled her eyebrows. I groaned as they laughed at me again.

I didn’t say anything and let them talk for the rest of the journey home. When we arrived, my dad said he would be in his office. We headed to my room and tried on all the stuff that we’d bought. When we got bored, we decided that we should have our talk before doing anything else.

“Ok! I’ll go first,” Pixie sighed. I nodded and waited for her to say something.

“Jeff cheated on me,” she said, her eyes glossing over. I immediately hugged her and she cried on my shoulder. I had to wait for her to calm down first.

“How did you find out?” I asked.

“I went to his house after school since he didn’t come to school. When I got there, his helper let me in. I walked closer and closer to his room, and I heard some giggling. When I opened the door, he was sitting on his bed making out with Tiffany,” she sniffed.

“Ah damn! I’m so sorry Pix, but it’s his loss!” I tried to cheer her up.

“I know,” she smiled weakly.

“He didn’t deserve you and at least you found out now rather than later. Does he know that you know?” I asked. She shook her head.

“I haven’t broken up with him yet, but he’s been blowing up my phone,” she said, showing me all the missed calls and texts. It was safe to say that the boy was panicking about her whereabouts and why she isn’t talking to him.

“Well, let him suffer until you’re ready to break up with him,” I smiled.

“Will do! Now, it’s your turn,” she said.

I numbed at her words.

She was making me relive that day two years ago – the day that changed me, the day that changed my life, the day that I lost my mother, the day that I became the town’s freak, and the day that I lost my best friend, my twin sister Kay.
