VERONICA
“What?! Marry Lawrence Williams? That infamous playboy? Mom! Dad! You can’t be serious right now!” I l flipped out when my parents told me I had to marry the infamous playboy son of a conglomerate family.
“Veronica, this is the only way...we must save our company. The company is going under, the company is in debts, we can’t afford to pay the workers anymore and lots of accumulated loan to be paid...”
“Dad, is there no other way?”
It wasn’t only that I was being arranged to some playboy in a marriage but heavens! I had a boyfriend I cherished a lot. How could mother and father do this to me.
“You think I didn’t look all nook and cranny before coming to this decision?”
Dad’s voice was strained and his eyes weary from lack of sleep. Mom was quiet just like that day. I knew they wouldn’t have easily made the decision... I knew it was only fair I helped my parents to stop our company from going under...I knew all that but why did it have to be me...why...
“No, I can’t marry him dad, I can’t. I have a boyfriend and you know. I can’t possibly leave him for that playboy.”
“Then you would rather let the company go down, all your father and I worked for, and our whole lives messed up? All for a man?” Mother snapped.
“Mother, you don’t understand! I love Vincent!”
“Love? What do you know about love?” Mother frowned in disgust. “Look darling, my parents arranged a marriage with me and your dad, and today we are among the best couple. Come on, Vero, this is for the best and he might not be as bad as the media paints him.”
“Mother, why can’t my sister do it? she is the elder here and if anything she is to be the one saving the company with some arranged marriage and not me.”
“Your sister has to work in the company. Break up with that boyfriend of yours today. Your marriage will be fixed and that’s final.” Dad said and walked out.
“Dad!” I yelled as he left. Then I turned towards mother. “Mother, You and Dad can’t do this to me! I have always done what you asked me to do. I studied business management for you and have done all you asked of me and now this? I can’t...I can’t...”
“I’m sorry my daughter but this is the best we could do to save the family’s company.”
Mom left me too, leaving me feeling like my whole life had crashed.
I had heard of his tales and there wasn’t a month or two that passed without his name appearing in the news headlines for one scandal or another.
I shook my head. A rollercoaster of emotions held me; anger, frustration and confusion all mixed together.
I quickly took out my phone and keyed his name in the search engine.
His pictures and full biography appeared at once.
“Lawrence Williams, the heir and only son of his wealthy family...Williams group...” I read out loud as I skimmed through his info. His facial features caught my eyes. For a moment I stared. But a second later I jolted myself back and let out a loud hiss. He could have been handsome for all I cared but heck he was a playboy and a known troublemaker. And too, I had my boyfriend, Vincent.
I had to do something. I couldn’t let myself be thrown off to a stranger in that way.
I paced in the room as I racked my head on how best to save my family’s business without having to marry some stranger.
A knock sounded after some minutes.
“Enter.”
“Ma’am you have a call...” the lady house keeper announced as she held out the telephone towards me.
I frowned a bit as I wasn’t expecting any call.
“Hello?” I spoke into the phone.
“Hello, am I onto Miss Veronica Nicholas?” An unfamiliar voice came on.
“Yes, and who are you?”
“This is Lawyer Steve and I am representing Mr Lawrence Williams. If you don’t mind, Mr Lawrence Williams would love to have a brief meeting with you.”
I scoffed, curious as to what the playboy possibly had to say to me. He must be reeling with happiness for ruining my life. I wondered if he suddenly got tired of whoring around with different ladies.
I agreed to the meeting. This could be the moment I was seeking for. A moment to end this arranged marriage from happening.
I quickly slipped into one of my fancy dresses, grabbed my handbag and drove out of the house.
I got to the location I was given; like I expected, it was one of the fancy hotels. Thankfully, I was used to this kind of life as I elegantly made my way to the receptionist.
“I’m here to see...” I was still speaking when a man suddenly appeared behind me.
“This way ma’am, please.” I gave him the who-are-you look. He took out a card from his pocket and showed me.
“Please follow him. I am Lawyer Steve and we spoke. I believe you are here to see my client.”
I followed the man and was led into one of the VIP’s rooms.
“Please have a seat, Miss Veronica Nicholas.”
“Veronica is fine.”
He nodded and pointed me to a seat which I took gracefully.
All the while, a man I was only able to catch glimpses of his back just stood behind the opened blinds of the window.
After I seated, I faced Mr Steve.
“Why did you call me here?”
“I called you here...” the figure behind the window finally spoke. And then he turned to face us.
It was no one else but Lawrence Williams. He started towards me, the ray of the sunlight escaping the spot he had left struck my eyes preventing me from getting a better look at him. He lowered himself into the seat across me.
“Well, I know I excite a lot of women and I know a lot of women wish is to have me in their bed? What do you say? I let you have me for a night and you find a way to have your parents dissolve this...marriage or whatever...”
My fist tightened so hard. I had never been insulted in that manner all my life. What? A night with him? Who did he think he was? I stood to my feet and landed a staggering slap across his face.
“A night with you? I would rather wish to remain single all my life than be married to a playboy like you!” I gritted at him.
“Miss Veronica, you can’t be violent towards my client, you can be sued for it,” his puppet lawyer said.
“Ah, I see...he must be paying you a lot of money for you to be his puppet...then why don’t you tell your client to watch his words or he will be getting more than just a slap.”
The obnoxious jerk let out a chuckle as he held his cheek. “Mr Steve, it’s fine. I can handle this much...I felt like I was being massaged on the cheek. Soft hands you got. She is a daughter from a wealthy family after all, but, make sure not to try this again, Miss Veronica,” he said, the annoying smile in his crooked lips infuriating me the more.
“For the last time, why did you make me come here? To me, this marriage is nothing but a paper marriage. And for your information, Mr playboy, I have a boyfriend I cherish so much.” I turned to stomp out of the place when he started to clap maniacally, his face gleaming with smiles.
“Mr Steve! Isn’t this wonderful to hear?”
I frowned, what wonderful thing was making him act like a crazy person.
“Well, Miss Veronica, if you don’t mind, please have a seat as it seems we are on the same path.” The lawyer said.
I reluctantly sat down.
He took out a document from his bag and placed it before me on the table.
“My client here also has a woman he cherishes and would love to continue his relationship with her while he is in this arranged marriage with you, and of course he won’t be stopping you from continuing your relationship with your boyfriend.”
“What my lawyer here is trying to say simply is...I live my life as I always do and you can do same...this marriage is for our parents and the media of course.” Lawrence added.
Even though the offer sounded like what I really prefer, but I imagined mother and father growling with shock if they heard of it.
“And if the media catches you?”
“I will make sure they don’t and same with you...and we won’t have to hide for long because in this document is also an agreement that says we divorce this marriage after five years. I’m sure your family business would have gone back to track... we divorce and go our separate ways. Isn’t it wonderful?”
I picked up the document. A five years marriage contract. Why hadn’t I thought of it.
“Considering our situation, I believe we both wanted this.” Lawrence added as he causally poured himself a drink.
“I will have my lawyer look through it.” I said and stood up.
“Fine, just have in mind that we don’t have all the time in the world.”
I shot him one last look before I started to walk out.
“But something baffles me,” I stopped after walking a step. “When did the infamous playboy decide to stick to a woman? Or is it one of the ladies after your money? I mean, I doubt any lady out there would like anything about you. I wonder who she is this time around.” I smirked.
I didn’t wait to hear him speak as I walked out wondering which unlucky woman had fallen in love with someone like him.
WRITER'S POV “Here! Taste this, you will like it,” Tracey offered. Veronica opened her mouth wide and she threw in some sandwiches. “You two don't eat it all without us!” Elsie yelled behind them from the canopy shed. “I thought you wanted to maintain this figure for your fans?” Gail asked Elsie. “So what? I am allowed to add a few pounds,” Elsie retorted. “Then your fans will be mad and unfollow you.” “Hey! How can you say that!” Elsie fumed. “Oh-oh. Is that an angry bird?” Gail taunted. In a sweep, she took to her heels knowing exactly what was coming next. As expected Elsie chased after her threatening to kill her if she caught her. Veronica and Tracey exchanged looks and busted into laughter. When Tracey's phone rang, she stepped aside to take her call. “I will be back,” she flashed Veronica a smile before stepping aside. Veronica closed her eyes, drinking in the freshness of the gentle breeze. She had reconciled with her friends and they were cooler and clo
WRITER'S POVLANDE BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTIONDIRECTOR CHARLEY OFFICECharley closed up the file he was working on, stood and walked to the wooden coat rack. He retrieved his coat and slung his arms into it. A glance at his wristwatch confirmed Benita was already on her way. He didn't want to keep her waiting for long. If his plan was going to work, then he must show the gentleman side of him. That wouldn't need him breaking a lot of sweat. He smirked, stepping away from the rack. There was a bit of a ruffle outside his door which stopped a moment later. The next second, the door flung open and a figure barged in much to his. “Hello old friend. This is where you have been hiding your sinful self the whole time. Not bad.”Charley tried to be calm. “What are you doing here…how do you know I was here?”“Well, don't be so surprised now. You know getting information like this is like a walk in the park for someone like me,” Lawrence smirked, “Director Charley, have a seat. Let's have
WRITER'S POV“There you are…” He breathed in relief. She was seated in a seat and writing inside a notepad, her suitcase beside her. Was she parking or unparking? She looked up when she saw him. “You are back.”He stepped inside, eyes glued to her. He had a lot to say to her but seeing her had his words sinking right back into his stomach. “Uhm, come, there's something I need us to do,” he finally said. She got up. “What is it?” “Outside.”With the flowers tucked behind him, he stepped aside and motioned for her to step out first. Reluctantly, she started out of her room wondering what it was he wanted to show her. “Come in now.”Lawyer Steve entered. “Do you remember him?”Veronica tried to think. Lawyer Steve’s face struck a faintly familiar face to her. But she couldn't fully grasp where she had met him. But it soon began to click. “Wait… that lawyer…”Lawyer Steve grinned pleased that she finally remembered him. “But what is he doing here?” She asked. “Well, I am here
WRITER'S POV“Hello, Uncles.”Jack Williams and Noah Williams turned. “I must be seeing wrong. Isn't this our dear nephew, Noah?” Jack Williams and Noah Williams exchanged astonished looks which quickly morphed into an unpleasant one. “What brings our dearest nephew to a place like this?”“Beats me. His name and pictures are all over the media. He is at a risk of losing his position in the group but he chose to come here instead,” Jack sneered. He looked up at Lawrence. “Are you sure you are at the right place?” Lawrence chuckled. He drew out a seat from an empty table which he pulled to his uncles’ table and sat down. “Well, it hasn't been easy for me these past days, no thanks to someone,” he stated calmly as he poured himself a drink. Both Noah and Jack Williams exchanged another look and busted into laughter.“But, don't you think you are being rude right now? There are empty tables. What makes you think you can sit at the same table with us? Your mother truly didn't teach you
WRITER'S POV“Should I take you back to the house or to the office, sir?”“No, we just got started. I should see my Uncles. Find out where they are right now.”“Sir?” Jessie blurted in shock. “Hurry up Jessie. We don't have time.”“Yes sir.” Jessie made a call to both Noah and Jack's secretaries and they confirmed the two weren't in office. When he called their homes, it turned out they weren't home either. “They are not home either,” Jessie reported. Lawrence's eyes crinkled into a pleased glint. “This is good,” he breathed, “I think I have an idea where they might be,” he smirked and got into the car. Minutes later, they stopped in front of a bar. “Chad exotic.” Jessie mumbled out loud. He frowned and looked at his boss. Surely he had made a mistake. Chad Exotic, a known average bar that could be likened to be a dangerous place for anyone in the category of weak to be in. Drug use, gambling, illegal business exchanges and illegal partnership happened to be the major activi
WRITER'S POV“Lawrence… you are here. “ Bianca gasped. Carefully, she lowered her sleeping child into the cradle, ran to Lawrence and embraced him. “I knew you would come. No matter how mad you must have been about what I did, I knew you loved me and still…”Lawrence jerked off her body. The fact that she was still disillusioned irritated him. She reached forward and grabbed his hands. Tears clouded her eyes. “You know, everything I did was because I loved you. I couldn't bear to live without you. I regretted hurting you and I wanted to make amends.”He sneered. “Love me? What a load of crap.” Then snatched his hands away. “I swear it. I really loved you…no, I really love you even this moment, Lawrence.”“Unfortunately I am in love with another person now. Save your love.”“That bitch?” “Watch your mouth now. I ain't here to chit chat with you,” he warned sternly. She stepped back, disappointed. “Why have you come then? To mock me? After filing a lawsuit against me? I know you
LAWRENCE'S POVI didn't know it was going to hurt that much… hearing Veronica agree with father's suggestion of us breaking up. Had she felt nothing for me this whole time? Does she not see how crazy she has made me? She had changed me and now she wanted things to end between us. The torture was too much. My heart twisted painfully. I watched her until she got into her room. I was confused, scared and worried. I had failed my parents and wanted to make things right again in whatever way. But losing Veronica? That was never part of my plans.I couldn't lose her now just when my innocence has been proved that I never got Bianca pregnant. I wanted her. I wanted to be with her. I wanted to tell her how much I missed her while she was away and how much I wanted the truth to be out sop I will be with her. “Charley… that bastard…”I took out my phone and called Jessie. “Invite a reporter over to the house.”I told him then I got into my car and drove off. “Jeez man! You look a mess!”Ca
VERONICA'S POVAfter Chairman Williams and his wife left, I slumped into the seat. I couldn't breathe. In the last minutes, I couldn't breathe. I had always imagined this day. I did but I never imagined my heart feeling this wrenched. I stared at Lawrence. He was up on his feet looking at the window almost restlessly. What was going on in his head?I wondered why he never told me he found out the child wasn't his. Was he ever going to tell me if this didn't happen?Perhaps he never would have. Perhaps he had gotten comfortable with his ex-girlfriend while I was away. I felt my throat dry and ended up swallowing hard, burning my throat in the process. “Sir, the reporters are headed here. They have gotten a wind of your residence,”Jessie announced. Lawrence let out a frustrated sigh. “We have to leave now. The reporters will soon flood here,” he told me. “I will pick a few of my things,” I said as I stood up and went into my room. On my way out I heard Jessie telling him the rep
WRITER'S POVWhile they waited for Lawrence to arrive, Mrs Williams phone started to ring. “What!” The next second she hung up the call and got into the Internet. “My goodness…” she plopped to the seat. Veronica rushed over to her side. “Mother…ma'am, is everything alright? Are you okay?”“How can I be okay? How can I be alright? Where is Lawrence!” Mrs Williams growled. “Take, have a look.”Veronica collected her phone and the news flashed before her eyes. She gasped. It's over. It's really over. Shit… this is all messed up.She looked at Bianca who had quickly gotten onto the Internet. With the smirk on her face, Veronica could tell she had seen the news. “What am I going to do?” Mrs Williams stood, panicking. She already knew what his husband's brothers would be planning. Her phone rang nonstop. When it wasn't ringing, it was beeping indicating the entrance of messages. “Whoever did this…I have you to thank.” Bianca smirked. The news about her and Lawrence was all over t
