Chapter 4

作者: Fifteen
After leaving the Sanders' family home, I headed straight to my house. This time, I packed my luggage faster than I did last night and threw out anything I did not plan to take with me. I did not have many clothes. All I had were a few sets of working clothes.

I did not hesitate to get rid of the items on the table that were associated with Jake. I took down our picture from the wall and slammed it face down on the table. There were even trinkets in the drawer that he had brought home while on a business trip, and a few notes he had written.

My heart remained calm as I looked at everything. That was when I realized it was difficult to pull yourself out of a long-term relationship when both parties had gone through so much together. Even so, throwing materialistic objects away was an easy thing to do.

The sky slowly turned dark. I was halfway through my stuff when Nina texted me: [Have you gone home, Cassie? They're having another rowdy night on the mountains. I can't believe that Jake is actually going to spend the night with that woman.]

I read the text slowly.

According to old customs, after a man drank the marriage wine and prayed at the church, the relationship between him and the woman would be set in stone after sleeping with the woman on the same night. However, it was a custom that few would bring up nowadays.

Yet, Jake was being coerced by his group of friends to go ahead with it. They kept convincing him by saying that Jake had drunk the wine and prayed at the church. It would make sense if he completed the entire course.

Nina started cursing in her texts, and she asked if I wanted to head up the mountains to stop this from continuing. I stared at her text for a long time before replying: [Got it.]

I placed my phone by the side, surprised that I was not angered by what was about to happen. I suddenly felt lucky that I did not place all my hopes on Jake coming back to me.

Even as the night got longer, there was still no knock on the door. All I could hear outside the house was the wind and rain. I packed up the last of my things and zipped up my luggage. After that, I informed my family about where I was going.

While I was waiting for the taxi, I turned back to give the house a last glance. I was reminded of how Jake and I lived in a basement years ago, not long after we left town. The corner of the basement was damp, and in winter, I could not sleep because of the freezing weather.

Jake would hold me in his arms and tell me that there would come a day when he would bring me back to our hometown in glory. He wanted everyone to know that I was his pride and joy, and I believed him then.

Now that I thought about it, he might not have been lying back then. He had just changed along the way, and nothing was the same as it had been. As for me, I was too busy getting drunk in my own dreams of the future, and it took me a long time to finally sober up.

I took out the wine vat from my luggage.

It was drizzling outside the window. I opened up the vat slowly. The scent of the wine filled the air, mingling with the smell of rain and hitting me right in the face.

This was supposed to be the moment I had been waiting for all my life, but the scent of the wine only seemed to make my situation even more ironic. I did not hesitate as I turned the wine vat over and poured everything onto the ground.

That was when a strong pair of hands reached out to stop me.

Meanwhile, inside a private room, a group of people started coercing Jake by pushing Erica and him into the room, claiming that Jake should accept Erica for drinking her wine.

Jake berated them at the beginning for taking the joke too far, but Erica quickly used the excuse of being drunk and pretending to be scared to convince him to stay with her in the room for a while. They could hear laughter and teasing outside the room.

The lights were dim, and the scent of wine and a nice fragrance mingled in the air. The atmosphere started becoming steamy, and under such circumstances, the lines of morality started to blur.

Jake was supposed to keep his distance, but he did not push Erica away in the end. That was also how he missed the text from his friend, reading: [Hurry over, Jake! Someone is proposing to Cassie at her house!]

  • Ask Not the Wine of Lost Years   Chapter 10

My wedding date got closer, and my family and the Peytons became even busier. As for Jake, he seemed to be stuck in the same place. He no longer tried to stop me and no longer created any commotion outside my family home, but he did seem to go into decline as days passed by.It was only later that I found out that he kept thinking about the past during this time. He had gotten so used to life with me that he had taken it for granted. Now that I had suddenly vanished from his life, he finally realized just how big a hole I had left behind in his life.Jake's mother was finally silenced as well. She knew how much I had suffered all those years I was with Jake, and knew how much financial responsibility I had shouldered for Jake and his family. After I was gone, she started to realize what was missing from her home. However, it was too late for regrets now that things had turned out this way. The night before the wedding, the entire town made last preparations for the big day. Crates

  • Ask Not the Wine of Lost Years   Chapter 9

The first time I met Jake alone again was two weeks before the wedding. I was going through the list of things I had to prepare for the wedding with Nina that day, looking at clothes, candies, and thank-you cards. There was a lot to do, but I felt good and even looked forward to the day."Cassie."When I heard the voice, I looked up and saw Jake. He had lost weight, and he looked much more haggard than before. Jake came up to me and stopped me from leaving. "Can we talk?"I looked at him. "Go on."Jake was surprised as he did not expect me to be so calm, but he still told me everything he wanted to say. "I've cut ties with Erica. I won't have anything to do with her from now on. Please give me another chance, Cassie. I promise I'll do whatever you tell me to."I listened to him quietly before asking, "Why should I?"Jake was not prepared for that reply. I looked at him and continued calmly, "Why should I wait for you to come back to me just because you've apologized after pushi

My family started to prepare for my wedding after I was officially engaged. As for Jake, his efforts to reach me were futile. He started by trying to find information about my whereabouts, even waiting outside my family home more than once to try to see me, but he was denied the opportunity. However, he refused to give up and tried asking for Nina's help instead. Unfortunately for him, Nina only felt disgust for him. She would either kick him out or throw sarcastic words at him. She refused to pass any of his messages to me.The more Jake failed in his attempts to reach out to me, the more he started to reminisce about the days we were together. The first few years after leaving our hometown, we rented a basement as it was the cheapest accommodation we could find. It was humid during summer, and freezing during winter. I was worried about his gastritis and would always make sure that he was properly covered with the only thick blanket we had.Jake remembered how I went everywher

The moment my mother said that, my elders indicated that the engagement ceremony should continue. Cole presented the gifts he brought in front of everyone and said solemnly, "I can't make up for everything Cassie has gone through in the past, but if she is willing, I will do everything I can to make her life better. I don't care about anything, but if Cassie is willing to spend the rest of her life with me."Jake finally lost control as he tried to rush into the house, but the people by the door stopped him. He could only shout my name repeatedly over the crowd in front of him, "Cassie! Cassie!"I turned back to look at him. There was no grievance or hate in my eyes but a clear distinction of us being strangers from now on. After that, I turned away to continue with the engagement ceremony. It was only then that Jake finally understood that this was not a ploy of mine to force him into marriage, but I really did not want him anymore. He could only watch from outside the house as h

Jake was stunned to find out about this. I had kept that wine for 28 years and refused to let anyone touch it. He knew better than anyone else what that meant. Nina looked at him and said slowly, "She trusted the wrong person once with something she truly cherished. It won't happen a second time."With that, she turned and walked back into the house without giving Jake another chance. That afternoon, Erica came to see Jake again. She brought along medicine and some food, then continued with her gentle, obedient act as she asked if Jake was troubled over what had happened with me.Jake would have drunk it all in if this were before, but Erica's appearance only reminded him of the vat of wine in the day, the church at night, and how they crossed the line in that room. When Erica noticed something different in his reaction, she said softly, "If you really can't let Cassie go, I don't mind taking a step back. I just don't want everybody to end up in an unhappy situation."That was

  • Ask Not the Wine of Lost Years   Chapter 5

The car came for me at dawn. The mountain roads were still damp from the night before. When I placed my luggage in the car, I took one last glance at the house I had lived in for years before climbing into the car. When I got home, my mother pushed a bowl of soup toward me. "You should have something to eat."I lowered my head to take a few sips, and the anger inside me eventually subsided a little. My family did not ask me about what happened the night before. All they did was glance at my luggage and my exhausted face, and they understood everything. My uncle was seated at the side, saying in a steady voice. "Don't worry about what happens next. We'll take care of it."I nodded as tears started to fill my eyes, but I held back from crying.…Meanwhile, Jake went home at noon. Erica had deleted the text before he could read it.Jake returned to a half-empty house. All of my things were gone, and only the broken pieces of the wine vat and the faint scent of wine washed away by t
