Chapter 3

作者: Fifteen
The next morning, I still made my way to the Sanders' family home to return all the betrothal gifts to them. The door of the house was wide open, and it was filled with relatives. There were tea trays, snacks, and wedding lists on the table, and it did not look like a normal family gathering.

When I stepped into the house, I spotted Erica seated in the living room. She was dressed decently and sat obediently while Jake's mother introduced her to all their relatives. I stood where I was as I listened to everyone laugh and tease her.

"Jake has been doing well out there, and it's only right that we should be generous with the betrothal gifts. If their wedding has been confirmed, we'll pay 80,000 dollars for their wedding."

Eight thousand dollars.

I was stunned to hear the number because I was reminded of last year when Jake mentioned that he wanted a wedding reception in our hometown. Back then, his mother had casually told us that 8,000 dollars was enough for our wedding, and I accepted it.

Their relatives continued chatting as Jake's mother sat at the side without interrupting. She smiled and nodded at their conversation.

"It's only right that we show our sincerity when Jake would be marrying such a young and beautiful lady."

I clenched my fists as I felt bitterness in my throat.

For years, I had stayed by Jake's side as we left our hometown for a better future. We lived in the basement in the beginning, and we got through the toughest moments together. When his projects fell through, I stood by his side, and when he ran out of money, I used my savings to help him out financially.

Yet, in the end, I was nothing to his family.

When Jake saw me, he turned pale. He quickly came toward me and whispered, "Don't misunderstand any of this. The older generation just enjoys a little bit of idle chat."

I looked at him and smiled with tears in my eyes. "Your family is already discussing betrothal gifts with her. Is that considered a little bit of idle chat? Why didn't you tell me that you planned to marry two women?"

Jake frowned. "I just said that this is my mom's own doing. You shouldn't be so petty about everything. It's because of this that my mom isn't entirely happy about you."

He was still insisting that I was being petty at a moment like this. I had nothing else to say to him.

Erica stood up right away when she saw us, and she put on an innocent look. "Don't take this the wrong way, Cassie. I'm just accompanying Jake's mother. I didn't expect everyone to get so enthusiastic about this topic.

"Besides, if I really liked someone, it wouldn't bother me that he is poor. I would still want to be with him."

The more she acted this way, the more it made me look unreasonable.

Just as I expected, Jake's mother took the bait. "Erica's right. Some people are just greedy enough to want everything."

Everyone around us started to laugh tauntingly.

I walked over to the table slowly and picked up the wedding list. It was filled with things to buy and plans for the wedding. Everything was stated clearly, much unlike what I had years ago. All I had was one sentence, "Let's make everything as simple as possible. It's not easy for my son to make money."

This reminded me of how many stupid things I had done in the past years. The last tinge of unhappiness within me suddenly vanished because at this moment, I no longer wanted to feel like the victim.

Jake reached out to pull my hand and whispered, "Don't make a fuss here. I'll make it up to you later, all right?"

Make it up to me? He talked about making it up to me again, but I would not leave with him. I took out an old silver bracelet from my bag and placed it gently on the table. It was the betrothal gift his family had given to me years ago.

I looked at the silver bracelet on the table and said calmly. "I'm returning this to you."

Jake turned pale. "What do you mean by this, Cassie?"

I looked at him. "I meant exactly what I just said."

Erica's eyes turned red again as she spoke up anxiously. "Did Cassie misunderstand something because I'm here? I think it's best that I leave…"

She was about to walk out the door when Jake immediately reached out to stop her. "It's not what you think."

I finally saw things clearly. Every time Erica and I stood before him, Jake would always choose to protect her, not me. I was never his choice. Hence, I nodded. "It's just as well. We wouldn't want any trouble down the road."

With that, I turned to leave.

Jake could not hold back his anger as he shouted behind me, "When will you stop making such a fuss, Cassie?"

I did not look back.

When I returned home, my phone lit up with a text from my mother: [Take a look. Everything you see is from him. I think this boy isn't bad. He has manners and thinks of everything.]

She had shared a photo of a car trunk filled with presents. Every present was carefully picked out, and I even saw a design that was the same purse I had kept saved in an online shopping cart.

My mother had always been a good judge of character, and I trusted her.

My wedding date got closer, and my family and the Peytons became even busier. As for Jake, he seemed to be stuck in the same place. He no longer tried to stop me and no longer created any commotion outside my family home, but he did seem to go into decline as days passed by.It was only later that I found out that he kept thinking about the past during this time. He had gotten so used to life with me that he had taken it for granted. Now that I had suddenly vanished from his life, he finally realized just how big a hole I had left behind in his life.Jake's mother was finally silenced as well. She knew how much I had suffered all those years I was with Jake, and knew how much financial responsibility I had shouldered for Jake and his family. After I was gone, she started to realize what was missing from her home. However, it was too late for regrets now that things had turned out this way. The night before the wedding, the entire town made last preparations for the big day. Crates

The first time I met Jake alone again was two weeks before the wedding. I was going through the list of things I had to prepare for the wedding with Nina that day, looking at clothes, candies, and thank-you cards. There was a lot to do, but I felt good and even looked forward to the day."Cassie."When I heard the voice, I looked up and saw Jake. He had lost weight, and he looked much more haggard than before. Jake came up to me and stopped me from leaving. "Can we talk?"I looked at him. "Go on."Jake was surprised as he did not expect me to be so calm, but he still told me everything he wanted to say. "I've cut ties with Erica. I won't have anything to do with her from now on. Please give me another chance, Cassie. I promise I'll do whatever you tell me to."I listened to him quietly before asking, "Why should I?"Jake was not prepared for that reply. I looked at him and continued calmly, "Why should I wait for you to come back to me just because you've apologized after pushi

My family started to prepare for my wedding after I was officially engaged. As for Jake, his efforts to reach me were futile. He started by trying to find information about my whereabouts, even waiting outside my family home more than once to try to see me, but he was denied the opportunity. However, he refused to give up and tried asking for Nina's help instead. Unfortunately for him, Nina only felt disgust for him. She would either kick him out or throw sarcastic words at him. She refused to pass any of his messages to me.The more Jake failed in his attempts to reach out to me, the more he started to reminisce about the days we were together. The first few years after leaving our hometown, we rented a basement as it was the cheapest accommodation we could find. It was humid during summer, and freezing during winter. I was worried about his gastritis and would always make sure that he was properly covered with the only thick blanket we had.Jake remembered how I went everywher

The moment my mother said that, my elders indicated that the engagement ceremony should continue. Cole presented the gifts he brought in front of everyone and said solemnly, "I can't make up for everything Cassie has gone through in the past, but if she is willing, I will do everything I can to make her life better. I don't care about anything, but if Cassie is willing to spend the rest of her life with me."Jake finally lost control as he tried to rush into the house, but the people by the door stopped him. He could only shout my name repeatedly over the crowd in front of him, "Cassie! Cassie!"I turned back to look at him. There was no grievance or hate in my eyes but a clear distinction of us being strangers from now on. After that, I turned away to continue with the engagement ceremony. It was only then that Jake finally understood that this was not a ploy of mine to force him into marriage, but I really did not want him anymore. He could only watch from outside the house as h

Jake was stunned to find out about this. I had kept that wine for 28 years and refused to let anyone touch it. He knew better than anyone else what that meant. Nina looked at him and said slowly, "She trusted the wrong person once with something she truly cherished. It won't happen a second time."With that, she turned and walked back into the house without giving Jake another chance. That afternoon, Erica came to see Jake again. She brought along medicine and some food, then continued with her gentle, obedient act as she asked if Jake was troubled over what had happened with me.Jake would have drunk it all in if this were before, but Erica's appearance only reminded him of the vat of wine in the day, the church at night, and how they crossed the line in that room. When Erica noticed something different in his reaction, she said softly, "If you really can't let Cassie go, I don't mind taking a step back. I just don't want everybody to end up in an unhappy situation."That was

The car came for me at dawn. The mountain roads were still damp from the night before. When I placed my luggage in the car, I took one last glance at the house I had lived in for years before climbing into the car. When I got home, my mother pushed a bowl of soup toward me. "You should have something to eat."I lowered my head to take a few sips, and the anger inside me eventually subsided a little. My family did not ask me about what happened the night before. All they did was glance at my luggage and my exhausted face, and they understood everything. My uncle was seated at the side, saying in a steady voice. "Don't worry about what happens next. We'll take care of it."I nodded as tears started to fill my eyes, but I held back from crying.…Meanwhile, Jake went home at noon. Erica had deleted the text before he could read it.Jake returned to a half-empty house. All of my things were gone, and only the broken pieces of the wine vat and the faint scent of wine washed away by t
