Chapter 6

Author: Underemployed Nomad
The judge declared the hearing over, and the bailiffs quickly restored order.

I was escorted out under restraint.

The moment we entered the corridor, Jessica appeared in my path. She stared at me, her voice icy. "The whole firm is talking about the rumors involving Danny right now. Do you want to explain yourself?"

I held my head high and met her gaze. "Explain what? I never had time to set him up."

Jessica's face darkened further. "Are you saying you had nothing to do with it? So he did it to himself? Don't think I don't know. You're the one who told Mr. Sutton all of that."

I had told Hank my private reason for quitting. That much was true. But he would never repeat it, and I certainly had not spread it around either.

"If someone happened to overhear us and word got out, is that my fault too?" I argued.

Jessica clenched her fists. "Whatever the case, you're the one who said it first. If you don't apologize publicly, you can expect to get sued. And it won't stop with this case. Good luck ever practicing law again after that. Think it over carefully."

Daniel stepped in right on cue. "Jessie, maybe... just let it go. I'll leave, that's all. I'll wait tables, whatever it takes. I can make it work. If I've wrecked what you two have, I—"

I forced a smile and spat to the side. "Cut the act."

Jessica's anger flared. She fixed me with a cold stare. "Then go cooperate with the investigation, Mr. Walton."

The bailiffs continued escorting me out.

A crowd had already gathered outside the courthouse. They pelted me with rotten vegetable leaves and eggs, then dumped buckets of dirty water in my direction. They screamed and cursed, without a single kind word among them.

I did not catch my breath until the police put me in the car.

For a moment, the scene felt strangely familiar.

Back when Daniel's father died and his grandmother's family threw him and his mother out, it had looked just like this. Kids, egged on by adults, had thrown stones at their backs. Old women at the edge of the village had stood around wagging their tongues.

Daniel had been in the same state I was now, and I had shielded him. Jessica had gotten him and his mother into the car while I stayed behind to block the stones and trade curses with the crowd.

Now they had handed that same wreckage back to me.

By the time I walked out of the police station, it was already deep into the night. I had not done what they claimed, so naturally, the police had found nothing.

My phone was about to die. I quickened my pace, hoping to find a hotel and get some rest.

As I crossed an alley, the roar of a motorcycle rose behind me.

I turned, but the darkness hid the rider's face. Still, I knew without a doubt that whoever it was had come for me.

I broke into a run and darted into a narrow side alley. The motorcycle could not follow, so I pulled out my phone and fumbled with the screen in a panic.

My emergency contacts were Jessica and Daniel. There was no time to think of anyone else.

I called one number, then the other, over and over. I sent message after message. Still, neither of them responded.

Footsteps were already closing in from the mouth of the alley.

I held my breath and kept trying.

Finally, a call connected. The words rushed out of me. "Jessica, someone's after me. I'm at—"

"What now?" she cut in, impatience thick in her voice. "If you don't want to apologize, you don't have to put on a show about it. Weren't you just released? Do you want to go back in?"

The call disconnected the next second.

I froze.

A voice came from directly above me. "Found you."

I looked up and saw Daniel's ex-fiancée, Amelia Rutter. Her face loomed over me, twisted with hatred. A group of hired men stood behind her.

Amelia laughed as if she had lost her mind.

She snatched up a baseball bat propped against the wall and swung it straight at me. "You filthy piece of trash. You helped that bitch sue me, didn't you? And now? I hear he seduced your girlfriend and knocked her up too. How does it feel? You got betrayed too, didn't you? Hurts, doesn't it?"

She raised the bat again. "Don't forget, you're the one who handed that filthy man to your own girlfriend. You brought this on yourself."

The bat connected, and my head spun. Blood flooded my vision, staining everything red.

In the final second before darkness swallowed me, regret hit hard. I regretted loving Jessica and ever calling Daniel my best friend.

When I opened my eyes again, I was in a hospital. My phone would not stop buzzing.

Jessica had sent me several messages. Impatience dripped from every line.

Jessica: [You actually ended up in the hospital? Was it Danny's ex, that bitch?]

Jessica: [I told you to apologize sooner. Now look. People probably think Danny sent someone to threaten you.]

Jessica: [Whatever. Just get better. You've gotten hurt taking the fall for your buddy plenty of times before. What's one more?]

I stared at the messages for so long that I did not notice the door open.

Jack's voice finally pulled me out of my daze. "Mr. Walton, how are you feeling?"

I looked up. He carried an armful of toiletries, while Tina hugged a pile of snacks to her chest.

"The doctor said you'd be here for a few days. Figured I'd stick around and look after you before heading back. After all, you got hurt over my case. Was it my ex-wife? I'm real sorry about this, Mr. Walton."

My gaze settled on the plastic washbasin on the floor.

Whenever I had gotten hurt before, Jessica and Daniel had come to the hospital too. They had brought expensive toiletries and baskets of fresh fruit.

But now, none of those things felt as real as the cheap snacks in Tina's arms.

Jack looked a little embarrassed. "Mr. Walton, this stuff's all cheap. Hope you don't mind."

I shook my head. My voice came out thick. "I don't mind. This is more than enough."

I paused, then looked at him. "Jack, the case is only on hold. There's still a chance. I'm going to find you someone else this time. Are you willing to try again?"

He stared at me for a long moment, then gave me a firm nod.

I sent him a message with an address. "Go there. Someone will be waiting for you."

He thanked me over and over as he left, glancing back every few steps.

Before he walked out, he stopped and asked one last question. "What about you?"

I smiled and glanced at the boarding pass on my phone. "I'll be somewhere else, waiting for both of you to win."

After Jack left with his daughter, I checked myself out of the hospital.

The plane lifted into the sky.

Somewhere else, someone was waiting for me.

My steps faltered for a second, but I kept walking toward Jessica. Her eyes stayed fixed on my hand, which was still linked with Lyanna's, and her expression twisted somewhere between anger and genuine pain.I turned to Lyanna and released her hand first. "Wait for me in the car."Something in Lyanna's expression darkened, but she let me go without a fight. "Okay. Call me if you need me."I nodded and watched her head down the steps. Only then did I walk up to Jessica. "What is it?"She kept her head down, her mouth moving without producing any words. After a moment, she finally spoke. "Now that the hearing's over, do you have any..."She never finished the sentence.Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a figure closing in fast. The person was short and hunched, dressed head to toe in black, with a hat and mask hiding her face. Then sunlight caught something in her hand, and a flash of silver made my stomach drop.Every instinct in me screamed at once. She was already too clos

Calling her a witness turned out to be a formality. Jessica said nothing at all. She simply handed the bailiff a USB drive. The contents played almost immediately: recordings of coworkers talking among themselves."That intern, you mean Daniel? He's the one who said Mr. Walton spread rumors about him.""Yeah, that's what he told me too. Everyone in the break room heard it that day.""He said Mr. Walton smeared him just to make team lead. But thinking about it now, Daniel was never even a threat to that spot, was he?""Right, he's just an intern... and I actually watched him argue that divorce case. The evidence was all there, laid out cleanly, and he still lost.""Looked completely unprofessional too. He was reading straight from the file and still got the dates wrong.""Yeah... He kept saying Mr. Walton went after him out of spite, smeared him, spread rumors about him. Looking at it now, who's actually the one spreading rumors here?""He only felt safe saying any of that becau

Nobody said a word at the dinner table. My parents were so focused on me that they barely had any attention left for Lyanna. They kept sneaking careful glances at my face, worried I might still be hurting over Jessica.I sighed. "I'm really fine. I let that go a long time ago."Lyanna attentively refilled my water. "So, about Daniel..."I paused and looked at her. "I need to go back to Cloudance City."She blinked, then smiled. "Okay. I'll come with you."Worry filled my parents' eyes."Be careful. Lawsuits aren't simple."I laughed, and Lyanna joined in. "Don't worry, Mr. and Mrs. Walton. I'm just as capable as Cal."…We returned to Cloudance City three days later. I went through every piece of evidence Jessica had sent me. There was plenty to prove what had been done to me, but the evidence linking Daniel to the rumor campaign was still nowhere near enough.I pulled out my phone and texted Hank.[Let's meet up, Mr. Sutton.]We met at a coffee shop and quickly worked out

Once everyone had settled into the living room, silence hung over us for a long moment.Eventually, Jessica's mother's eyes reddened, and she smacked Jessica on the arm. "You ungrateful girl. Say something!"Jessica finally raised her head and looked at me. The bruises on her face were still untreated. Compared to Lyanna's, hers looked far worse. Her voice came out hoarse. "Cal, I... I know I wronged you. But what happened before... that was Daniel's doing."His mother was afraid she wouldn't live long enough to see him get married, so she had him put something in my herbal soup. I had no idea. I didn't find out until afterward."Cal, I was a victim too, just like you..."I stared at her without expression. "So I'm not a victim, then? Is that it? I'm supposed to be betrayed and still end up being the one expected to forgive you?"My father's expression hardened. "My son is right. He shouldn't have to bear the consequences of what you did."My mother's voice was equally firm. "E

The color drained further from Jessica's face. She lowered her gaze in humiliation and stood there like a sheet of paper left out in the rain, as if a single gust of wind could tear her apart. Her lips moved before she forced out one last card. "But... we've been together for 28 years. We've been through so much together. I was part of your life for the first half of it. And I had an abortion. The baby... is gone now. Can you really just walk away from that?"I turned to her, my expression blank. "You're right. We've been together for 28 years. And the two of you still did something like this to me, didn't you? An abortion doesn't erase the fact that the baby existed."There's nothing to weigh here, Jessica. I've still got my whole life ahead of me. I'm not going to risk any of it over a little nostalgia. I don't need to."Whether either of you stays in my life or not doesn't matter to me anymore."I turned to walk away. Then she spoke again. "Is it because of her? Is that why yo

Jessica didn't wait for me to come to her. She walked over first.Beside me, Lyanna went rigid, instantly on guard. She started to step in front of me, but I caught her arm.I shook my head slightly and kept my eyes on Jessica as she approached. "It's fine."Lyanna stopped, though she continued to watch Jessica warily.Jessica came closer and glanced at her before her gaze settled on my face. She had changed a lot, and it showed.Lawyers cared more than most people about keeping up appearances, but dark circles ringed her eyes now, and her face had grown thin. She looked like a kite with no one holding the string, one gust away from blowing off completely.I looked her over and said nothing.Sure enough, she was the one who couldn't hold out. "Cal... υou remembered the anniversary plan."She had always been like that: indirect. She never said what she meant outright, whether it was kindness or cruelty. And yet, somehow, when it came to Daniel, she had always known exactly how t
