By Thursday morning, something had changed.

Eliana noticed it the moment she stepped onto campus.

People were looking at her.

Not everyone.

But enough.

She slowed down.

“Amara?”

Her friend turned.

“What?”

“Why is everyone staring?”

Amara looked around.

Then she sighed.

“Oh.”

“Oh what?”

“You haven't heard?”

“Heard what?”

Amara hesitated.

“Eliana…there are rumors about you.”

Eliana's stomach dropped.

“What kind of rumors?”

Amara lowered her voice.

“That you're dating Nate.”

Eliana stared at her.

Monday morning came with an uncomfortable silence.Eliana noticed it almost immediately.Usually, when she stepped into the hallway, Nate would already be making some ridiculous comment.Usually, Ilyas would remind her about something she'd forgotten.Today, nothing. She opened her door.Nate was standing outside his apartment.Their eyes met.“Morning,” he said.“Morning.”A second later, Ilyas stepped out.“Good morning.”“Good morning.”The three stood there.Quietly.Eliana's heart began beating faster. She wondered if they somehow knew. But there was no way.She hadn't told either of them.“Are we going?” Nate finally asked.“Yeah,” Eliana said quickly. They headed toward the elevator. At university, things felt even stranger.Nate was quieter than usual.Ilyas was quieter than Nate. And Eliana couldn't stop thinking about Saturday.Every time she looked at Ilyas, she remembered the kiss.Every time Nate came close, she remembered his arms around her.She felt guilty. But she als

Saturday morning arrived quietly.Eliana woke up thinking about the previous night's festival. The lights. The fireworks. The laughter. And two moments she couldn't stop replaying. She didn't know why.Maybe because something about last night had felt different. She got dressed and headed downstairs.Ilyas was already there. He was sitting on the bench outside The Hawthorne, reading something on his phone. When he noticed her, he smiled.“Morning.”“Morning.”She sat beside him.“You're up early.”“So are you.”“I couldn't sleep.”“Why?”Eliana hesitated.“Nothing.”Ilyas studied her face.“You're thinking about something.”She smiled.“Maybe.”He put his phone away.“Want to talk about it?”Eliana looked at him. There was something about the way he asked. No teasing. No pressure.Just genuine concern. She smiled.“It's nothing bad.”“Good.”They sat quietly for a moment. Then Ilyas said,“I had a really good time yesterday.”“Me too.”“With you.”Eliana's heart skipped.“With me?”He

Friday afternoon couldn't come fast enough.Eliana practically ran out of her final lecture.“Freedom!”Amara laughed beside her.“You have assignments.”“Don't ruin this for me.”They stepped into the courtyard, where students were already making plans for the weekend.Amara suddenly stopped.“Oh, look.”Eliana followed her gaze.Nate was standing near the fountain with Jordan and Chris.Ilyas was beside him. They were arguing about something.Again.Eliana smiled.“What are they fighting about now?”Amara raised an eyebrow.“You mean your two boyfriends?”“They are not my boyfriends.”“That's not what the campus rumors say.”Eliana groaned.“Please don't remind me.”As they approached, Nate noticed them.“There she is!”Eliana smiled.“Why do you always announce my arrival?”“Because you're important.”Chris immediately coughed.Nate glared at him.“What?”“Nothing.”Ilyas smiled.“Are you two doing anything tonight?”Eliana looked at him.“No. Why?”“There’s a university festival t

By Wednesday, Eliana had already regretted telling Amara about Nate and Ilyas. Not because there was anything wrong with them. But because Amara had apparently decided that they were now her favorite topic.“So,” Amara said as they walked across campus, “which one?”Eliana sighed.“Please don't start.”“I haven't even started.”“You're about to.”Amara grinned.“Nate or Ilyas?”“Neither.”“Liar.”“They're my friends.”“Then why do you smile every time you talk about them?”Eliana opened her mouth.Nothing came out.Amara laughed.“Exactly.”Before Eliana could defend herself, they reached the courtyard.Nate was already there. He was sitting on a low wall with Jordan and Chris, laughing about something. When he noticed Eliana, his face immediately lit up.“There she is.”Eliana smiled.“Hi.”Nate jumped down.“You disappeared yesterday.”“I had class.”“You could've told me.”“Why?”“So I could complain.”She laughed.Chris looked between them.“Okay…”Nate glanced at him.“What?”“No

You told me.”“And?”“And you haven't told me anything interesting.”Eliana smiled.“Nothing interesting happened.”Amara stared at her.“That is a lie.”“What?”“You have that smile.”“What smile?”“The one you get when something—or someone—is on your mind.”Eliana rolled her eyes.“You're dramatic.”“I'm observant.”“You're nosy.”“Same thing.”They laughed.Amara linked her arm through Eliana's.“So?”“So what?”“Who are they?”“Who?”“Your neighbors.”Eliana stopped walking.“How do you know about them?”“You mentioned them three times last week.”“I did?”“Four, actuall
