Chapter 6

“Clearly, I'm not okay!” Richard yelled angrily as he stood up from where he sat.

The contents of the tray had spilled on him, soiling his clothes in a manner that was beyond repair.

“I'm sorry sir, I would quickly find a remedy”, the female employee said as she hurriedly ran off the scene.

Emily finally stood up with a trembling knee. Her head got lowered to the floor as she couldn't curtail the fierce and furious gaze that emanated from Richard and her manager.

“I'm sorry”, she muttered calmly, with her heart beating out of her chest.

She felt terrible, especially because of the current state of Richard

His blue tuxedo suit was totally ruined. Her heart sank in total despair when she realized that the suit he wore was probably more expensive than her salary.

Richard stood still, taking in the pitiful and sorry gazes of the people around while deciding on what next to do.

He had never been this embarrassed in his life and for a moment, he regretted coming to the restaurant to relax.

“I'm deeply sorry sir! She would definitely pay for what she did to you. I promise”, the manager said to Richard, who shifted his gaze to Emily.

For the first time, he took a closer look at her and discovered how helpless she was.

At that point, his heart softened as he gazed intently at Emily, who whimpered silently with an expression of remorse.

The manager turned to Emily and huffed in annoyance.

“Emily, you're fired!” He spat angrily and walked away.

For a moment, Emily thought that she was in a dream or trance, and so, she didn't take the utterance seriously. However, she knew it wasn't a dream when she looked around and found the eyes of people looking at her in pity.

Richard stayed still, observing everything about Emily, from her facial expression, to her reactions and then, her body.

“Her name is Emily?” Richard asked himself silently as his eyes met with hers.

They stayed mute for some seconds, their mind filled with thoughts which they couldn't utter.

“I'm genuinely sorry sir”, Emily finally said as tears welled up in her eyes.

She had just lost her job, and that was every reason to get soaked in tears.

“I'm sorry about that”, she repeated as the tears finally trickled down her eyes.

Richard couldn't believe what his eyes were witnessing. He had never been moved by someone's tears like he was with hers.

His heart craved to pull her into a hug and assure her that everything was going to be okay. However, he couldn't do that because of the different eyes that were glued to him at the moment.

He knew better than to remain at that scene. At this, he picked up his keys that laid on the table and hurriedly left the restaurant, brushing past Emily, whose head was lowered to the floor in misery.

Her world suddenly became dark and despite how she racked her head for an answer, nothing came up. She was done with, she knew it.
